Description

Aug. 4, 1931. A. .1. w. WIr-:GERT 1,817,050
AUTOMOBILE BRUSH Filed April 8. 1929 lZi/emar Patented Aug. 4, 1931 PATENT OFFICE AUGUST J. W. WIEGERT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI AUTOMOBILE BRUSH Application filed April 8, 1929. Serial No. 353,629.
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in automobile brushes, the objects of the invention being to provide a brush having an elongated hollow handle adapted to lhave one end detachably connected to a hose and having the opposite end terminating in an integral head in which are seated the ends of a U-shaped bristle member, there being a central opening formed in lo said head communicating with said chamber for discharging the water longitudinally and centrally of said bristle member.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a suitable mop member or cover for enl5 closing said bristle member7 said mop member being adapted to be detachably secured to said handle adjacent to said head. This mop member is formed of material of loose texture, whereby water can pass freely therethrough and keep the mop strings well saturated.
Additional objects of the invention are to simplify the construction of automobile brushes ofthe class described, and provide a suitable handle whereby said brush can be easily manipulated.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts,
3o hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my im: proved brush and showing the mop member in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1 and showing the mop member in full lines.
Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line 4o 8 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal cross section through the handle and the head thereof.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 10 indicates a brush comprising a bristle member 11 and an elongated handle 12. This handle is of suitable length and diameter so as to fit in the palm ofthe hand so that the brush may be conveniently manipulated. This handle is formed hollow 5C having a longitudinally disposed chamber 13 and said handle is preferably tapered toward a head 1-1 which is formed integral with said handle and is disposed transversely thereto. The opposite end of the handle terminates in an internally threaded seat 15 which communicates with said chamber 13 and is adapted to have screw-seated therein the threaded coupling 1G of a hose 17. A. circular flange 18 is formed integral with said handle and separates said seat 15 from chamber 13 without interfering with the passage of water from the hose to the chamber 13. A Washer' 19 is preferably interposed between coupling 1G and flange 18 so that a fluid-tight joint can be formed between the hose and the handle.
. The head 14e is provided near each end with an aperture 2O in which is seated one end of a wire member 21 of bristle member 11. This wire 21 is U shape and the bristle member 11 is of usual construction. The ends of the wire member are secured in apertures 20 in any suitable manner, preferably by soldering. The head 14 is provided with an outlet or aperture 22 which is arranged coaxially with the handle and opens toward the bristle member 11 so that the water discharged through said opening is directed longitudinally and centrally of said bristle member and substantially in the same horizontal plane therewith. This insures an ample supply of water for the entire bristle member during the washing operation so that the dirt loosened by the brush is floated away by the water discharged against the bristles.
- As the head 14 is formed integral with handle 12 and the wire ends of the bristle member 11 are soldered in position in the head, there are no loose parts which can become lost and the cost of manufacture is thus materially reduced.
In order to enable the use of the brush in washing the top and body of the car without danger of scratching or injuring the surface thereof, I provide a mop member or cover 23 which is made in the form of a bag and is-of suitable size so that it may be slipped over the bristle member. The loose end of this mop member is provided with a` draw string 24 by means of which the open end can be tied onto the handle adjacent to the head 14.
The strings 25 of member 23 form a soft and yieldable cleaning material which is suitable for washing the top and body surface withoutk 5 danger of injury thereto. n
The mop member or cover 28 is formed of material of very loose texture so that the water discharged from the handle can readily pass through said cover and keep ,themop strings .well supplied with water and wash away all dust and grit.
Since the head 14 and handle 12 areformed ofa single piece casting, no assembling operations are required, with the exceptionof sol- 4 15 dering the end of the wire member 21 in the aperture 20. Thus my improved brushcan beeconomically manufactured and lis assured of long life of usefulness asthere are noiparts to get .lost or out of order. Y
' 20 The provision of .mop cover 23 ena-blesthe use ofthe brushin washingthe top andzbody of thecar, as well as ythe wheels. Asthecover is formed offvvery loose'texture, itis highly porous so that the water can readily pass therethrough.
A Vhile I have shown and described the-preferred form of my invention, it is obvious that minor changes in the construction .of any brush can be made without departing from B0 the spirit of my invention. Y
y I claim: v
In a deviceof the class described, the comhina-tion of an elongated" hollow handle having a longitudinal chamberformed therein,
one end of said handle being provided with an internallythreaded outwardly opening seat communicating with one end of said chamber and adapted to have screw-seated therein the coupling of a hose, the other end n or of said handle terminating in an Yintegral transversely dis-posed head having a central opening forming a' discharge outlet-for said chamber, said head having Aafpair of spaced apertures, and a U-s'haped bristle member T having its wire ends secured in said apertures and extending longitudinally of said handle substantially in the same horizontal plane with `the `axis thereoll and of saiddischarge Y opening, whereby the Y water discharged r through said central opening issues in` a stream longitudinally of and between the par allel portions vof said bristle member, whereby the stream of wa-ter discharged through said outlet is directed longitudinally of the parf allel portions of said bristle member. 1
`In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature this 2nd day of April, 1929; AUGUST J. Wg VIEGERT.
