I v I This invention relates to improvements in drill stems for use in well drilling,an-object being to provide a stem which will insure the rapid passage of water therethrough 5 in large quantities, to stir up and mix foreign substances within the well, whereby the latter may be rapidly and effectually bailed.
I Another object of the invention is the provision of a drill stem, which while permitting the rapid flow of water therethrough, will exclude foreign matter and prevent clogging.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a drill stem,-which in addition to the above and other advantageous features,
16 is constructed so that it ma be readily assembled and disassembled to acilitate cleaning, or renewal of any of the parts.
With th'e'above' and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following 20 novel features and details of constructiomto be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompan' ing drawing and pointed out in the appen ed claim.
In the drawing the figure shown is a view partly in section and partly in elevation il lustrating a drill stem constructed in accord ance with the invention.
Referring tothe drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the stem which is of sectional formation includes a section 10 and a section 11, the sections being threadedly connected as shownat 12.
The outer end of-the section 10 is closed by the drill bit 13 which is threadedly connected to the stem as shown at 14 and which is provided with an opening 15 therethrough,
so as to provide an outlet for the hollow-stem of the bit. The 40 the stem is connected tothe usual drill rod. The section 11 is provided with a transiverse'. partition 17 and this partition is provided with an opening 18, the latter providing communication with the chamber 19 which is formed in the section 11 by means of the partition 17 The walls of this chamber are provided with openings 20 which are. covered by a screen21, so that water may enter outer end of the section 11' is closed by a coupl-ingl6, by means of which the chamber 19 freely through the openings 20, but foreign matter will be excluded.
A second partition 22 extends transversely of the stem and is spaced from the partition 17. This partition 22 is clamped between the sections 10 and 11 and is provided with an openin 23. A valve chamber 24 is thus provided or the accommodation of a valve 25, the latter being preferably of hollow rubber formation so as to float into position to close the opening 18.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing that the invention provides a drill stem through which water may freely pass to stir up and mix foreign substances -within the well so that the latter may be readily bailed. It will also be apparent t at the stem may be readily taken apartfor cleaning or rep acement of any of the parts when necessary and may thereafter be readily assembled.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right-is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. 1 v Having described the invention what is 5 claimed is: I
In a drill, ahollow sectional stem, means threadedly connecting the sections, a bit sothreadedly engaging and closing the outer end of one section, said bit having an open ing therethrough communicating with the interior of said section, a drill rod coupling closing the outer-end of the other section of the stem, a partition extending transversely of and spaced from the end of said other section and defining a chamberwithin the stem, said partition having an opening therethrough and the side walls of the chamber also hav- 9o ing openings therethrough, a screen covering the side wall openings, a second partition clamped between the dull stem sections and having an opening therethrough, the second partitlon being spaced from the first mentioned partition to provide a valve chamber, and a ball valve within the valve chamber.
