Abstract

650,286. Well boring. SCHNITTER, S. B. June 22, 1948, No. 16757. Convention date, June 27, 1947. [Class 85] A well pipe or casing 3 is floated into a bore 2 and has secured on its lower end by shear pins 19 a shoe 4 in which is formed a one-way valve that prevents entry of water into the casing. When in position, a ball 16 is dropped down onto a seat formed in the shoe so closing the fluid passage through the shoe and a head 6 secured to the casing, the head normally being separated by valves from the fluid flow circuit to the casing formed by the pipe 13a, valve 11 and T-connection 9. On applying pressure, the shoe is blown clear of the casing so permitting washing fluid to be pumped through the casing into the borehole without encountering any major restriction to flow. During this washing process, the head is opened up to receive a plug 14, then closed. By opening valves 7, 12 and closing valve 11, this plug is forced into the casing. The valves are then reversed and cement pumped into the casing onto the plug 14, whilst a second plug 14a having attached to it a a valve 51 is placed in the now isolated head. When the desired quantity of cement has entered the casing, the second plug is entered into the casing in a manner similar to the first so that the cement is positively separated from the washing fluid. The cement is forced down the casing and enters the bore when the lowermost plug falls clear and the valve unit on the second plug engages and locks onto a seat on a venturi-like restriction 5 positioned in the casing through which both plugs have passed so preventing movement of fluid in either direction. The resilient plugs have a number of peripheral flanges and a hollow interior which is open at each end, the openings being provided with ferrules into which fit corks that are expelled by the pressure of the fluid within the plug when it is being distorted on being forced past the restriction in the casing.
