This invention relates, generally, to improvements in vanity boxes or compacts for carrying cosmetic materials,and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a 'vanity box so constructed and arranged as to permanently receive a retaining cllp adapted to hold removable compact refills.

- Heretofore, vanity boxes have been pro: vided with compact refill retaining clips which are either loosely contained Within the vanity box or are contained therein by means of a positive fastening means, such as prongs, extending throughiapertures provided in the wall of the vanity box. The loosely con tained retaining clips commonly have spring fingers which are adapted to be deflected out-- wardly to engage a bead or other obstruction provided on the wall of the vanity box when a refill is inserted into the clip to thereby prevent the accidental displacement of the re taining clip. In use, however, it is found that such clips are often accidentally removed from the vanity box when old refills are taken therefrom and becoming lost render the vanity box useless. Those boxes having retaining clips secured therein, as by prongs, are found unsatisfactory in use owing to the tendency of loose powder or other cosmetic material escaping from the box through the prong apertures therein.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel vanity box and compact refill retaining clip therefor constructed and arranged so as to have suitable projections or protuberances' which are adapted to engage in corresponding depressions or recesses provided in the inner walls of the vanity box, said protuberances interacting with said recesses to permanently hold theretaining clip in desired position within the vanity box, while enabling ready removal of used coinp'act'refills and the reinsertion' of new refills. p v Other objects of this invention, not at this time'more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same. 1 The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view'of avanity box made according to and embodying the principles A of the present invention, the body sections thereof being shown in open relation Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig.1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the novel retaining clip embodied in this invention.

Similar characters of reference are em-. ployed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts. Referring now, to said drawings, the reference character 6 designates a lower body section of the vanity box, and 7 an upper body section thereof. Said body sections are respectively provided along their meeting rear edges with hinged knuckles 8 which in.' terfit one with another to receive a hinge pin 9, whereby said sections are hingedly connected together so as to close oneupon the other. The peripheryof the body section 7 is provided, at a'point thereof opposite its hinge connection with the lower body section 6, with a suitable lip 10 which is adapted to cooperate with a spring tongue 11 pro vided on a catch 12 mounted at the periphery of the lower body section 6. The lip 10 and catch 12 when engaged serve to interlock the sections 6'and 7 in closed relation. 7 According to the preferred embodiment of theinvention, the circumferential inner wall of the lower body section 6 is provided, at points preferably below the catch 12 and hinge knuckles 8, with small recesses or indentations 13 which are preferably formed by pressing the material of the body section radially outwardly somewhat at these points. The recesses 13 receive projections or pro tuberances 14 provided on oppositelyextending resilient portions 15 of a compact refill retaining clip 16 which rests upon the inner bottom surface of the body section 6. Retaining clip 16 is provided with three prongs 17 18 and 19 which extend outward- 1y from thecentral portion of the retaining clip and are arranged at angles of 120 with respect to one another and in surface contact with the. inner surface of the body section 6. Prongs 17, 18 and 19 are formed to provide upstanding catch portions 21 spaced radially inwardly from the inner side walls of the body section 6. The lower part of the catch portions 21 are curved radially inwardly somewhat to provide bezels 22 which are adapted to engage and retain the marginal edge portions of a compact refill 23. The upper free ends of the catch portions 21 are curved radially outwardly to facilitate the easy insertion of a compact refill into body section 6 by guiding the refill centrally of the retaining clip during such insertion.

The retaining clip 16 is readily assembled with the body section 6 by merely snapping the protuberances let into the recesses 13, the retaining clip assuming the upwardly bowed shape of the inner bottom surface of the body section 6 when such inner bottom surface is curved. The prongs 17, 18 and 19 being spaced 120 apart provide for a three point support of the refill, resulting in a stable mounting of the same. The catch portions 21 possess considerable resiliency which facilitates the ready insertion or removal of a refill. Inasmuch as the catch portions 21 are spaced radially inwardly of the inner walls of the body section 6, these catch portions may readily move outwardly during the insertion of a refill into the retaining clip. Also, this spacing of the catch portions 21 from the interior surface of the body section side walls, provides a space between the body section and the refill for the insertion of a tool to effect the removal of the latter.

The upper body section 7 is provided with a mirror inlay frame 24 that is frictionally retained within this body section and in turn holds a mirror 25 therewithin. When the body sections are in closed position, a suitable space is provided between the mirror 25 and the refill 23 to accommodate an applicator.

It will be noted that the novel vanity box of this invention provides a refill retaining clip of extremely simple construction, which clip when once snapped into position within the vanity box is permanently retained therein in fixed position. The catch portions 21 of the prongs, being suitably spaced from the walls of the body section, yield readily to accommodate the insertion of a refill and also enable the insertion of an instrument between the inner side wall of the body section and the refill to effect the removal thereof. The protuberances 14c cooperating with recesses 13 serve to firmly hold the retaining clip within the body section and prevent its accidental removal therefrom and possible subsequent loss even though considerable force may be exerted upon a refill in order to pry the same free of the catch portions 21.

The resilient engagement of the bezels 22 with the marginal edge portions of the compact refill prevents objectionable turning of the refill with respect to the clip 16 when an applicator is rubbed around on the refill, whereas any tendency for the clip 16 to turn is positively prevented by the interengagement of protuberances 14: with recesses 13.

It will be apparent that the indentations 13 may be struck inwardly from the side walls of the body section 6 if desired, in which event the protuberances 14: will snap under such indentations to hold the retaining clip in place.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

A vanity box comprising, a lower body section and a cooperating upper body. section hingedly connected together, one of said body sections being provided with an indentation in the side wall thereof adjacent the hinged connection of said body sections, a cosmetic refill retaining clip positioned within said indented body section, said retaining clip having a proturberance conforming to and engaging in said side wall indentation to thereby lock said retaining clip within said body section, and radiating prongs formed on said clip, said prongs having resilient catch portions thereon for yieldably regaining the marginal edges of a cosmetic re- 2. A vanity box comprising, a lower body section and a cooperating upper body section, one of said body sections being provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced indentations in the side wall thereof, a cosmetic refill retaining clip positioned within said indented body section, said retaining clip having resilient portions with protuberances formed on the free ends thereof, said protuberances conforming to and engaging said indentations to hold said clip within said body section, and radiating prongs formed on said clip, said prongs having resilient catch portions extending outwardly therefrom for yieldably retaining the marginal edges of a cosmetic refill, said catch portions being spaced inwardly from the side wall of said body section, thereby providing for free outward movement of said catch portions during the insertion or removal of a cosmetic refill.

A vanity box comprising, a'loweribody section and acooperating upper body section hingedly connected together, said body sections having cooperating catch elements disposed diametrically opposite to their hinge connection, said lowerv body sectionhaving indentations at opposite sides thereof, said respective indentations being disposed below said catch element and the hinged connection of the lower body section respectively, a cosmetic refill retaining clip positioned within said lower body section, said retaining clip having a central portion contacting with the inner bottom surface of said lower body section, oppositely extending resilient portions formed on said central portion, said resilient portions having their ends conforming to and engaging said indentations to thereby hold said retaining clip within said lower body section, and radiating prongs formed on said central portion, said prongs having resilient 1 catch portions formed on the free ends there of and extending upwardly from the inner bottom surface of said lower body section for yieldably retaining the marginal edges of a cosmetic refill.

4. A vanity body comprising, a lower body section and a cooperating upper body section, said lower body section having indentations at opposite sides thereof, a cosmetic refill retaining clip positioned within said lower body section, said retaining clip having a central portion contacting with the inner botv tom surface of said lower body section, oppositely extending resilient portions formed on said central portion, said resilient portions having their ends conforming to and engaging said indentations to thereby hold said retaining clip within said lower body section, and radiating prongs formed on said central portion, said prongs having resilient catch portions formed on the free ends thereof and extending upwardly from the'inner bottom surface of said lower body section, said catch portions having bezels formed thereon for detachably gripping the mar- 4o ginal edges of a cosmetic refill, said catch portions being spaced inwardly from the side wall of said body section, thereby providing for free outward movement of said catch portions during the insertion or removal of a cosmetic refill.
