VANITY CASE Filed Aug. 24, 1928 A'U'ORNEY Patented Oct. 14, 1930 PATE NT OFFICE WILLIAM E. WACKER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO AUGUST GOERTZ & 00.,
INC., A CORPORATION OF NEVT JERSEY VANITY CASE Application filed August 24, 1928. Serial No. 301,754.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in cosmetic boxes or vanity cases and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel means for retaining a V compact base in a vanity case or other holding means in such a manner that it is firmly secured therein and yet can be easily and quickly removed and replaced by a similar compact base. v
This invention-has for its principal object to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily manufactured construction whereby a cosmetic compact base can be easily and quickly inserted in or removed from a vanity case or other holder; and to this end is provided a frame, of metal or other sheet material, which defines an opening adjacent Whose edges, at spaced apart points, are provided inward- ,ly and transversely extending projections adapted to receive cooperating extensions projecting from a cosmetic compact base to hold the latter in easily and quickly detachable and replaceable position. 7
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be obvious from the followingparticular description of a vanity box embodying the invention or from an inspection of the accompanying drawings; and the invention also consists in certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
'In the accompanying drawings there are shown for purposes of illustration one form of the novel compact holding means embodying the invention, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an box, showing the interior, 7
Figure 2 is a plan view of a cosmetic compact base retaining frame Figure 3 is a plan viewof a cosmetic compact base; V D t Figure 4 is a plan view of a cosmetlc compact in a base;
Figure 5 is a bottom plane view of the frame of Figure 2, with the base of Figure 3 niounted therein, the latter being partly cut away; and
Figure 6 isa sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken along the line 66 of Figure 1.
open Vanity Similar characters of reference are em ployed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referringnow to the drawings, the reference character 10 indicates abody section of a simple form of vanity case or cosmetic box, having a hinged cover section 11 thereon. Said body section 10 is concavely curved and has about its periphery a flange 12 forming the sides thereof, and the cover section 11 has a corresponding side flange 13 which fits and abuts against said flange 12 when the case or box is closed. Fitting into said body section 10 is a retaining frame 14 which has a flange like rim 15 adapted to frictionally engage the inner face of said flange 12 to hold the frame 14 in said body section 10. Asshown the-sections 10 and 11 and frame 12 are hexagonal, but they can be square or round or some other. shape.
At the center of each of a pair of opposite straight portions 15, 15' of said rim 15 is provided an inwardly punched projection 16 which is spaced from the lower face of the main part of said frame 14, at a sufficient distance to accommodate the flange like edge 17 of the concave cosmetic compact base 18. Said compact base 18 is positioned in said frame 14 by inserting the former Withinthe rim 15 of the latter with the concave face toward the opening 19 of the frame and pressing the compact base to cause said flange like edge l7 to press against saidprojections 16, 16 and spring said straight portions 15, 15 outwardly until said flange like edge 17 has moved past said projections 16, 16 whereupon said straight portions 15, 15' will spring back into their normal place and lock said flange like edge between the frame 14 and projections 16, 16 (see Fig. 6). The said compact base 18 can be removed from saidnframe 14 in a similiar manner by applying pressure in the opposite direction.
In said compact base 18 is provided a cosmetic compact 20 in cake or solid form, and this can be of a height or thickness that will reach to the levelof the outer face of said frame 14 when it and its base are mounted in said frame. l/vhenthe base 18 is in the frame 14, mounted on' the projections 16, 16
thereof, and said frame 14 is mounted in said body section 10, then the bottom of said base 18 rests in the curve of said body section 10, as shown in Figure 6, and the base 18 is held 'thereby from displacement even when extreme pressure is applied as in rubbing the cosmetic compact 20 with a powt er puff. Further the flange 12 prevents the rim portions 15, 15 from spreading and locks the flange like edge 17 in place. The angular form of the body section and frame 1 1 prevents the latter from rotational movement when a powder puff is rubbed around on said cosmetic compact 20, and the frictional engagement of said flange like edge 17 with said rim portions 15 or projections 16, 16 will keep said base from turning when the powder puff is applied. When the body section 10 and frame 14 are circular the frictional engagement of said flange 12 and rim 15 will keep the frame from rotating.
At one edge said frame 14; is provided with a notch 21 to accommodate the riveted inner end of a catch stud 22 attached to the flange 12 of said body section 10 at a pomt opposite its hinge connection with said cover section 11, the latter having a clasp 28 for fitting over said stud 22 to secure the box or case in the closed position. Said notch 21 serves also for the insertion of the point of a knife or pin or other instrument for removing said frame 14 when desired, as, for example, for the purpose of removing the coirpact and base 18 and renewing the same.
Said cover section 11 is provided with a frame 2 1- which is somewhat similar to said frame 14 and which serves to hold a mirror 25 in place in said cover section. When the box or case is closed there is suflicient space between the cosmetic compact and the mirror to hold a powder puff.
It is to be understood that the vanity box or case of the invention or any of its parts can be made of celluloid or other suitable material instead of sheet metal.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A retaining frame for use in a vanity case and adapted to hold a cosmetic compact and base, or other article, and consisting of a main portion defining an opening; a flange like rim extending from said main portion about said opening at a short distance from y the latter; and oppositely spaced projections extending inwardly from said flange like rim, said projections being spaced from said main portion at a distance to accommodate a flange like edge extending from cosmetic compact base, and said flange like rim having a degree of give and springiness to permit outward movement of said projections when a cosmetic compact base is pressed thereagainst and whereby said projections will be moved back and under the base when the latter has moved thereby.
2. In a vanity case, in combination, a body section having a circumferential portion and flanges extending from one face thereof to define therewith a casing; and a compact base retaining frame consisting of a main portion defining an opening, flange like extensions at opposite sides of said opening at a short distance from the latter, and projections on said flange like extensions extending inwardly, said projections being spaced from said main portion at a distance to accommodate a flange like edge of an article such as a cosmetic compact base; said flange like extensions having a degree of give and springiness to permit outward movement of said projections when a cosmetic compact base having a flat edge is pressed thereagainst and whereby said projections can be moved back and under the flat ecge of the base when the same has moved thereby, and said frame being adapted to fit in said vanity case wit-h the flanges of the latter holding the flange like extensions of said frame from movement outwardly whereby a cosmetic compact base therein is locked in place.
3. A retaining frame for a cosmetic com pact, comprising a plate to overlie the compact, said plate having an opening of smaller diameter than that of the compact, a periplr eral laterally resilient flange depending from the outer margins of said plate, said flange being adapted to surround and abut the margins of said compact, and oppositely disposed projections extending inwardly from said flange, said projections being downwardly spaced beneath said plate at a distance sufficient to receive the marginal portions of said compact between the same and said plate, whereby said compact is upheld relative to said plate and accessible through the opening of the latter.
1. A retaining frame for a cosmetic compact, comprising a plate of polygonal peripheral shape to overlie the compact, said plate having a central opening of smaller diameter than that of the compact, a peripheral flange depending from the outer margins of said plate to surround and tangentially abut the margins of said compact, and oppositely disposed projections extending inwardly from said flange, said projections being downwardly spaced beneath said plate at a distance suflicient to receive the marginal portions of said compact between the same and said plate, whereby said compact is upheld relative to said plate and accessible through the opening of the latter.
5. In a vanity case having a body section "rovided with bounding side walls to provide a compact carrying compartment, a retaining frame for the compact, said frame comprising a plate to overlie the compact, said plate having an opening of smaller diameter than that of the compact, a peripheral latera1- ly resilient flange depending from the outer margins of said plate, said flange being adapted to surround and abut the margins of said compact, and oppositely disposed projections extending inwardly from said flange, said projections being downwardly spaced beneath said plate at a distance sufiicient to receive the marginal portions of said compact between the same and said plate, whereby said compact is upheld relative to said plate and accessible through the opening of the latter, said flange being adapted to telescopically fit said body section in frictionally engaged relation to the side walls thereof, and said flange when thus engaged being retained against flexing and consequent release of said projections from operative engaged relation with the compact.
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of August, 1928.
WILLIAM E. WACKER.
