Description
Patented May 12, 1931 UNITED STATES ISAAC A. BAUM, oF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS REENFORCED METAL JAMB CoNsTRUCTIoN Application filed April 7,
My invention relates to building construction and'more particularly to metal ]amb construction.
In building construction, it isunderstood that the prime consideration, especially in door and window framing, is that of strength and rigidity. VFrequently the construction found possible with Woodis veryl inefficient and unsatisfactory for the purpose desired.V It is common for wood to Warp and become unsightly, and the vplaster attached thereto is found to crack readily as the result of ordinary blows against the side of the frame.
An object of my invention is to provide plaster terminals in association with a metal door j amb, the terminals `being independent of said jamb and Welded thereto during fabricationf The leg of said terminal `is angularly bent and provides contact with the anges and the web of the jamb,y thus adding considerable strength adjacent the door stop. f
A still further object of my invention is the application of the plaster 'terminals to the channel flanges Without the usel of templates or other devices for properly posi? tioning the terminal in respect to the corner of the frame member. This is made possible by providing an angular bend in the strip providing the terminal. Thus, when the strip is applied to the web of the frame member, the terminal is automatically positioned at the predetermined spaced relation from the edge of the member.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a horizontal section of the metal jamb constructed in accordance with my invention; and Flig. 2 is a horizontal plan section of the Jam y By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that my invention comprises a metal 1930. Serial No. 442,242.
jamb-vof channel shape, comprising flanges 10, 11, and web 12 having a door `stop 13 formed therein. 1f desired plaster anchors 14 may be struck outl of the metal in the channel flanges 110, 11. 1
The plaster terminal is formed of a single,- continuous str ipof metal A, having a portion 15 .adapted tocontact the Webof the jamb,.adjaoent to the door stop, arspacing portion 16 bent at right angles thereto and adapted to Contact the channel "flanges, anda portion 17 formed at right angles to the portion .16 that serves as a plaster defining portion and terminal. The marginal edge of the terminal17 is rebent to form the plaster anchor 18. `,The strip generally indi'- cated byfA'is secured to the web and channel flanges 'by spot-welding or in some other' convenient manner.
It is readily `seen that by providing the spacing portion 16 on vthe strip Aythe plast-erv terminal is automatically spaced with reference to the edge of the frame member. Vhen the strip is applied to the web of the member, the plaster defining portion and terminal is exactly spaced without the use ofatcmplate or measuring strip during the welding Voperation as is commonlynecessary. rObviously much time is saved by the operator fabricating the member, and in addition the web of the member is considerably strengthened `adjacent to the door stop. n
V`It -is found most desirable in most instances-to continuethe leg 15 of the strip A up to and contacting the side faces of the door stop 13. .Thus the greatest strength against stresses set up in the door stop are provided in a simple and eicient manner.
Asbest shown in Fig. 1, the jamb herein contemplated is set up over a tile wall, geny orally indicated by B, with the channel flanges 10, 11 and web 12 contacting the tile faces. Thus, it willl be seen that the construction is not/only extremely rigid, but
has an added advantage of simplicity in installation, thus permitting installation by unskilled labor'.
Obviously variations and modifications may be made by one skilled in the art, and I d0 not wish to be limited except as indicated in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In metal frame construction, the combination of a channel shaped metal jamb, the flanges of which are adapted to contact the faces of a tile wall, and a continuous strip secured to said channel flanges and web, the outer margin of which is rebent to form a plaster anchor, said strip constituting a plaster terminal and ground.
2. In metal frame construction, the combination of a channel shaped metal jamb, the flanges of which are adapt-ed to Contact the faces of a tile wall, and plaster terminals secured to said jamb, said plaster terminals being formed of a strip of metal having one margin rebent to form a plaster anchor, a portion contacting said channel flanges and acting as a lateral spacer for said plaster terminal, and a portion contacting the web ofsaid jamb.
A device of the class described comprising in combination, a channel shaped metal door jamb having a door stop formed in the web thereof, and a plaster terminal associated therewith, said terminals being formed of a continuous strip of metal having a margin thereof rebent to form a plaster anchor, a portion of said terminal strip being secured to said channel flanges and a portion thereof being secured to said web, the portion contacting said flanges constituting a spacer to position said plaster terminal when said strip is applied to said jamb.
ll. A device of they class described, comprising in combination, a channel shaped metal door j amb having a door stop formed in the web thereof, and plaster terminals associated therewith, said terminals being formed of a continuous strip of metal having a margin thereof rebent to form a plaster anchor, the remaining portion of said strip being bent to provide two contacting surfaces with said channel, a portion contacting said flanges and a portion contacting said web, the portion contacting said flanges constituting a spacer to position said plaster terminal when said strip is applied to said jamb.
5. A device of the class described, comprising in combination a channel shaped metal door jamb having a door stop formed in the web thereof, and plaster terminals associated therewith, said terminals being formed of a continuous strip of metal having a margin thereof rebent to form a plaster anchor, the remaining portion of said strip beingl bent to provide two contacting si gnature.
