Description

W. WILSON, Jr.
Drop Hammer Patented Aug. 11. 1857.
I I uthu n mr. Washingiun. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WILSON JR., OF BRANDYWINE, DELAIVARE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILSON GREEN.
DROP-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,004, dated August 11, 1857.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I WVILLIAM l/VILsoN, J r., of Brandywine, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop- Presses for Stamping Metal; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
The improvement I have made in drop presses is in the device attached thereto, for the purpose of delivering or throwing out the disk (or article formed) as it is cut from the sheet of metal, and consists of a metal spring overhanging the die, it being so arranged that on the quick withdrawal of the drop or weight of the press, the spring shall flirt or throw the stamped article as it rebounds from the die, entirely clear of the press.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the press I would describe it as follows: A represents the bed on which the die I) is properly secured, and with the View of perfectly working the press this bed should be made of iron or stone, so as to secure a requisite firmness to cause the rebound of the disk.
B B, are standards serving as guides to the drop or weight C; they also support the pulley wheel D, over which passes the cord employed for raising the drop.
E isa flat spring made of metal; it is secured to a cross piece ((Z) connected with close as practicable, so that on the rising of the drop, the spring with a quick movement catches under the article cut in the die as it rebounds from the stroke of the press, and
throws it from the press with certainty and simplicity of device.
I am aware that several modes of delivery have been proposed, such as studs or followers passing through the bottom of the die, operated by levers independent of the drop; also wipers actuated by levers and other complex contrivances, but in none of these has advantage been taken of the rebound of the manufactured article in so simple and effective a manner as that proposed. by me.
Having described my improvements, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment of the spring E when so arranged with the drop C, as to effect the delivery of the article stamped, substantially in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name b,efore two subscribing witnesses.
