Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE HOLT, OF I/VINGHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAND-STAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,731, dated March 3, 1857.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE HoL'r, of IVinchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Stamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to t-he accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- C, is the pedestal or base from which rises the standard D supporting the moving parts of the apparatus; to the upper part of this standard are attached the lugs E between which plays the handle F pivoted at a and having the arm G and toe I) (seen dotted in the drawing). To one side of the standard is attached the sleeve H in which plays the rod I to the bottom of which is attached the die or stamp K; this rod is held up in the position shown in the drawing by a spiral spring L the end of the arm G resting on the top of the rod I. The inking roll M is hung in the arms N which are pivoted at c one one each side of the sleeve H; the axle of the roll plays up and down in slits d in the lower end of the arm N being held up to its work by the springs f there being one at each end of the roll. To each of the arms N are pivoted at g, near the upper end, the short arms P which are connected together by the cross piece L from which projects between the lugs E the dog z' against the end of which rests the toe the spring m which is attached at fn, to each side of the standard D and which presses against the cross piece L serving to keep the ink roll up in the position shown in the drawing when not forced therefrom by the movement of the handle F.
R is the platen on which the article to be stamped is placed; it is covered with cloth in the ordinary manner.
Operation: The handle F being moved in the direction of the arrow until its end. reaches A the toe o pressing against the dog z' forces the roll M in the direction of the arrow A beneath t-he die K inking the face of it, the springs f causing the roll to accommodate itself to the surface of the die. The handle F is now moved in the opposite direction toward B the point of the arm G pressing upon the rod I forces the die K down vertically upon the platen R or upon the article to be stamped as shown dotted at B. In moving the handle from A toward B as it regains its vertical position the spring m throws the roll M back into its original position before the rod I commences its vertical descent. When the impression has been made and the hand of the operator is removed from the handle the spring L raises the rod I into its original position the top of the die K resting against the bottom of the sleeve H.
I do not claim operating the platen or stem and the inking roll by a single operation of the hand but What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of a detached lever with its toe pieces for inking and taking the impression, when said inking and impressing devices are returned to their places by springs as set forth.
