This invention relates to garments of the shorts or trunk type more particularly to what are termed running pants, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the class referred to with means to arrest the pulling down of the waist band whereby the latter will retain its position about the waist of a wearer without discomfort.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the type referred to including means which will permit of sufficient expansion when bending over to prevent binding.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a

garment of the class referred to constructed and arranged whereby the life thereof is enhanced as the garment has as an inherent part thereof means to provide for the garment to adjust itself to both stout and thin men, who ordinarily would have the same waist line.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the type referred to designed primarily for purely athletic purposes and when worn for such purpose embodies an exceptional advantage, due to the fact that the waist band of the garment could be made to. fit snugly and with the back of the garment having sufficient elasticity to permit any sort of exercise without causing the garment to pull down from the waist line.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a

garment of the class referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient and free of discomfort when worn, readily assembled, and comparatively inexpensive to.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications 1923. A garment in accordance with this inven tion includes a waist portion 1, a thigh portion 2, a pair of short legs 3, a waist band 4 and a fly 5. The front of the garment is generally indicated at 6 and the back at 7 The front 6 of the garment is non-elastic throughout. parts thereof are slitted, and the rear edge'of each slit is positioned within a garment side. The slitted portions of the sides are secured together by rows of stitching.

- The back 7 of the garment is formed from" non-elastic and elastic material. The elastic portion of the back is indicated at Sand it is interposed between the waistband 4 and the top of that part of the non-elastic material of the back which is spaced from the waist band" rections from its center toward each side.

The top edge of the resilient section is squared.

The waistband 4 is formed from a lengt of material bent upon itself to provide a pair 1 of folds 9, 10 having the lower marginal portions thereof inturned as at 11 to oppose each other. The resilient section 8 at its top extends between the folded-in marginal por- Q as shown in Figure 2 for the purpose of adtions 11 of the folds 9, and said marginal portions 11 and the section 8 are secured together by a row of stitching 12. The Waist band 4 in proximity to the bend 13 is pro-r vided with a row of stitching 14. The bottom of the section 8 is inturned upon itself as at-15 and the top of the portion 17 of the back 7 is inturned upon itself as at 16. The inturned portions 15, 16 abut each other and said inturned portions of the sections 8 and 9 and part 17 are secured together by spaced rows of stitching 18, 19.

The section 8 is formed of one piece of material and is closed throughout and its shape is such that it gradually increases in width from each end towards its center. The top edge of portion 17 of the back 7 inclines upwardly in opposite directions from its center towards each end and corresponds in shape to the bottom edge of section 8.

One edge of each slit in a garment side is provided by the part 17 and an end of section 8 and the other edge of each slit is formed from the fabric providing each side of the garment. The edges of the slits provided by section 8 and part 17 are extended under the edges of the slits provided by the fabric forming the sides of the garment. The overlapping edges are secured together by rows of stitching 20 whereby the ends of section 8 are secured to the non-elastic fabric at the sides of thesgarment. The top edge of portion 17 is secured in overlapping relation with respect to the bottom edge of section 8 by the rows of stitching 18, 19.

The waist band 4 at each side is provided with a pair of spaced buttonholes 21, 22 through which extends an adjusting tape 23 which can be knotted together, in a manner iusting the size of the waist band 4. The length of the section 8 is such as, to extend in proximity to the vertical medians, of the sides of the garment when worn. Each tape 23 is fixedly secured to the waist band 4by a row of stitching 24. The tape is secured against the inner face of the waist band 4.

What I claim is:

A garment comprising a body portion including a front non-elastic throughout, a pair of sides and a back, each of said sides being slitted at its upper part, a waist band secured to said front and sides and formed of a pair of opposed folds, the bend betwen said folds forming the top edge of the band, said back formed of a non-elastic lower portion and an elastic one-piece upper portion closed throughout, said non-elastic portion spaced throughout from the bottom edge of the rear of the waist band,'said elastic portion having 7 its bottom edge secured to the top edge of said non-elastic portion andits top edge uninterrupted throughout and extending into and secured to the bottom edge of said waist band, one of the edges of each of said slits hereto.
