It is another object of this invention to provide a garment of the characterdescribed'having an improved waistjband'construction.

This invention possesses many other advantages and has other objects which may be made more easily apparent from a consideration of several embodiments of the invention. For this purpose there are shown a number of forms in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. These forms will now be described in detail, illustrating the general principles of the invention; but it is to be understood that this detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, the garment shown therein is a pair of mens under-shorts, and comprises a body forming portion or member 5 adapted to extend downwardly from the wearers waist and about the hips to the front portions of the thighs, terminating in spaced upwardly extending edges 6 and i. The body member 5 is shown as formed of a single thickness of woven fabric material cut on the bias, as indicated by the arrows a and b in Figure 4, which extend respectively in the direction of the warp and woof .of the fabric to provide transverse as well as 1 vertical resilience 'inthe garment. The member 5 has an extension 3 adapted to extend forwardly between the wearers legs and upwardly in front, terminating in a horizontally extending edge 9 below the waist line. A pair of simliar, half panels l0 and H are secured respectively to the edges 6 and 1, and to the edge 9, extending upwardly therefrom to the waist line. The half panels [0 and I l are arranged to be secured releasably in overlapping relation as by a' plu-'- rality of snap fasteners, buttons or the like, I2;

To maintain the front of the garment against sagging and distortion, the half'panels l0 and H are arranged to be stretch resistant in a direction transverse of the garment for which purpose they are formed of straight out fabric, as indicated by the arrows in Figure 3 which extend respectively in the direction of the warp and woof of the fabric. Further, each half panel [0 and I! may comprise two thicknesses of fabric as shown, formed by folding an appropriately shaped piece of fabric, or by stitching together r two pieces.

An important feature of the garment is the provision of a supporting pouch IT at the front of the crotch. This pouch I! is formed by providing fullness in the extension 8 and reenforcement it along the edge 9. Thus, from a comparison of Figure 1 and Figure 4, it will be apparent that in the completed garment the edge 9 extends more or less directly between points X and Y on the extension 8, a distance substantially less than the distance between these points along the outer edge C of the extension, the edge 9 being spaced from the central or crotch portion of the extension 8. Accordingly, darts or gathers I8 are provided along the edge 0 to take up the excess material when this edge C becomes the edge 9. Thus, when the extension 8 and reenforcement l6 are joined to the half panels H! and I I, there is substantial fullness of material along the edge 9 and in the extension and reenforcement therebelow, forming the pouch or pocket II.

The upper edge portion of the bias cut body member 5 is not sufiiciently stretch resistant to provide a satisfactory waist band by itself. Thus, a Waist band 20 formed of a pieceofz straight out fabric 2| with short pieces of elastic webbing or the like 22 and 23 at the opposite ends thereof is secured as by stitching along the. upper edge of the body member 5, terminating respectively at the edges 6 andv I, where the webbing. is secured to the half. panels in and H respectively. As clearly shown in. Figure 1,

the upper end portion of the body member 5 is of sufficient length to permit pleats 0r gathers indicated at 25 to be formed where it is attached to the elastic webbing 22 and 23, to allow for the stretch of the webbing.

I claim: 1. A pair of shorts comprising: a bias cut body -member adapted to extend downwardly from the wearers waist and about the hips to the front portions of the thighs, and having a crotch forming extension adapted to extend between the legs and upwardly in front to a substantially horizontal edge below thewaist; a bias out reenforcement overlying a part of said body member including said extension, said extension and said reenforcement havingmatching edges; said reenforcement being secured to said body member and said extension; and means joined to said a width between its. ends to correspond to the re- 4 horizontal edge extending to the waist, ther being darts in said extension and said reenforcement along said edge to provide fullness forming a pouch.
