Description

March 0, 1931- c. T. GILLASPY 1,796,249
J FILE HANDLE Filed May 16. 1929 eharlesrfiz'llaspy Patented Mar. 10, 1931 PATENT OFFICE CHARLES T. GILLASPY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA FILE HANDLE Application filed May 16, 1929. Serial No. 363,500.
My invention relates to file handles, and it is an object of the invention to provide a strong, durable, yet simple handle, which maybe easily applied or removed, and one which not only will hold the file at the proper angle for filing, but one which will not tire the hand in use; all as will be hereinafter more particularly specified and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure l is a perspective illustrating the application of my invention, and Figure 2 is a side elevation with the tine receiving portion in section.
In the drawings a conventional file is indicated at F, which is adapted to be held by a handle 10. The handle 10 comprises an e n larged hand grip 11 provided at its lower extremity with a tapered socket 12 for the reception of the tapered tine of the file. The hand grip 11 is similar to thegrip of a pistol and is made to fit the hand in its most natural position. as well as to set at just the right angle for filing which is substantially the angle of degrees from the perpendicular.
At the other end of the hand grip 11 is formed an integral extension 13 which ex 30 tends downwardly and forwardly and is provided with a substantially vertical or up right extremity 14 which terminates in a blunt or fiat end substantially in the plane of the slot 12. which extremity is adapted to bear upon the file surface. I
From the above description it will be understood that my handle having a taperedsocket 12 for the reception of the tapered tine of the file may be wedged upon the tine of the file to cause the handle to be firmly secured in place. Before applying the handle to the file, the tine of the file is slightly bent or curved, and the handle is applied to the file with the hand grip portion 11 on a concave side of the tine and driven into place. VVhereupon the tine presses against the top of the slot 12 at both ends of the same and between the ends it presses against the bottom of the slot. This securely holds the tine in place. The front end of the handle also assists in holding the parts together by pressing downwardly against the teeth on the fiat side of the file. and maintains the tine in distorted position. The forward end of the handle engaging the body of the file serves not only to prevent the handle from slipping off, but serves to carry the blows for cleaning well up on the file. It will be understood of course that my handle may be made in different sizes for different types of files and different shapes and sizes.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I, therefore, do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a file ha ving a bent tine ot' a hand grip portion having a curved tapering extremity extending downward in a position, to bear against the teeth of the file, the other extremity of the hand grip portion having a tapered socket wholly therein to receive the bent end of the tine, said bent tine serving to resiliently engage in the socket and to press the teeth of the file against the said tapered extremity, substantially as forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana. this 11th day of May, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty.-
nine.
CHARLES l. GILLASPY.
