Description
. WJGJBLAIRV v SWINGING CHAIRS FOR VESSELS. No.179,443 Patented. July 4,1875.
N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAFNER. WASDNNG'YONl DC.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. BLAIR, OF HAMPDEN, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENTIN SWINGING CHAIRS FOR VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [79,443, dated July 4, 1876; application filed March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. BLAIR, of Hampden, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs for Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of a chair for use upon steamers and sailing-vessels, so hung as to accommodate itself to the various motions of the vessel. This enables the user to retain his position with regard to the horizon under all circumstances, and avoids the unpleasant effect of the pitch and roll of the ship.
Reference to the drawing will explain my invention clearly.
At a is shown a standard or upright, which may be either expressly designed for the purpose or may be a part of the vessel itself. To this standard is pivoted a yoke, b, so as to turn easily upon its pivot c. This yoke is of sufiicient size to receive the chair between its arms. At 01 is the chair, secured to the extremhas upon its pivot being at right angles to the motion which the chair has upon the pivots attaching it to the arms of the yoke, the chair will accommodate itself both to the pitch and roll of the vessel, and in this manner retain its perpendicular.
I do not, of course, claim the gimbals used in my chair bythemselves, as I am aware that they are all old and well-known devices, and used for various purposes.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The standard at, having a yoke, b, pivoted thereto, as shown, in combination with the chair d, pivoted between the arms of said yoke, and provided with a receptacle, f, for the reception of ballast, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, 1876.
WILLIAM G. BLAIR.
