JNrrED JAMES GALLAHER, OF OSKALOOSA,.IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HANSON G. BALDWIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,185, dated J une 27, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES GALLAHER, of Oskaloosa,in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash -Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices that are used for holding or securing sashes in any given position; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the operative parts, whereby a cheap, durable, and efficient sash-fastener is produced, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
In the drawing hereunto annexed, Figure l is a plan view of my improved sash-fastener. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the covering-plate B Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. 4 is a plan view, of that side of the fastener which faces the room.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is a case or box, preferably made of metal, and having screw-holes a, by which it is secured to the jamb or window-casing. This box has two projecting shoulders, denoted by b, forming a recess, Within which is placed the sliding lock-bolt O. Pivoted in case A is an eccentric, D, operated by the lever E. The
axle of eccentric D, denoted by d, rests in a bearing in the covering-plate B, as shown in Fig; 1. The lockbolt G is recessed, as shown at a, so as to form a concave bearing-surface for the eccentric D.
From the foregoing description the operation ofmy improved sash-holder will be readily understood. When the eccentric D is in the position shown in the drawing the lock-bolt G will be entirely within the case A; but when the eccentric D is turned, by opera-ting the lever E, lock-bolt 0 will be forced against the side of the sash, thereby keeping this firmly in any given position.
It is obvious that, instead of being secured to the jamb or casing of the window, my improved sash-holder may be secured to the sash or frame, so as to work against either side of the jamb, the manner of operating it being alike in both cases.
I am aware that sash-holders have been made consisting of a sliding bolt or latch mounted within a case, and operated by an eccentric or cam lever, and I do not, therefore, claim this construction, broadly; but the advantage of my invention over others of a similar construction is, that the slide latch or bolt 0 is loose, being both detachable and reversible, and may be readily removed and replaced without disarranging or detaching any of the operating parts, so that bolts of a different width or of different material may be used in the same device at the option of the purchaser, to suit varying conditions of use.
Haying thus described my invention, Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In combination with the case A, having shoulders I) b and cam-lever D E, the removable and reversible slide latch or bolt (J, subtantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence .of two witnesses.
J AMES GALLAHER.
