IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,776, dated January 16, 1872.

Specification describing a certain Improved Sash-Lock and Fastener, invented by OSCAR W. NOBLE, of Darlington, in the county of La Fayette and State of Wisconsin.

Figure 1 represents a side view, of my improved sash-lock and fastener, showing it bind ing on the frame. Fig. 2 is a similar view of it, showing it bolted. Fig. 3 is avertical section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.

The invention will be first fully described, and subsequentlypointed out in the claims.

A in the drawing represents portion of a window-sash, to which my improved holder and lock are applied. B is the cam and bolt, set into a recess of the sash; and O the face-plate, coverin g said recess. The faceplate is, by pins or screws a, secured to the sash. The bolt or cam B is made of metal with a curved, serrated, or

roughened edge, I), that protrudes beyond the edge of the sash. A straight or slightly-bent slot, d, is in the bolt, and through it is fitted a pin, 6, projecting inwardly from the face-plate O. In the face-plate is a slot, f, similar to an inverted letter V. A pin,*g, projecting outwardly from the bolt, and serving as handle to the same, projects through theslotf.

When the sash is raised to any desired height the pin 9 will be in the arm as of the slot f, as in Fig. 1, the edge b of the cam being in contact with the window-frame D. As soon as the sash is let go its weight will cause the cam to swing on its pivot e, and the handle g to move down in the arm as of the slot, thereby making the edge b bite against the windowframe and sustain the sash in its elevated position.

When the sash is closed the cam is opposite a mortise, h, in the frame D, and can, as a bolt, be pushed into said mortise, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, thereby preventing theopening of the sash. In this latter position the pin 9 enters the upper arm y of the slot f, the slot d permitting the outward motion of the bolt. In this manner one piece B will serve both as a sash-holder and sash-lock.

By applying a projecting tongue to the cam the same can be made to look into mortises provided for its reception at proper intervals in the window-frame, and thus constitute an absolute support for the sash.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A bolt, B, having slot d and pin g, and a plate, 0, having pin 6 and slot 3 applied in combination to the recess of sash A, for the purpose described.

2. A cam-bolt, B, having slot 01 and pin 9, and a plate, 0, having slots w y, and pin 0, applied in combination to the recess of sash A, as described, and for the double purpose set forth.
