IMPROVEMENT IN MUSIC-STANDS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. RAND, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and y State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable-Case Music-Stands, of which the following is a specication: i A

The object of this invention is to provide a music-stand the several parts of which shall be attached to a central tube forming the main body of. the stand when in use, but which shall form a neat and convenient case, in which the said parts may be inclosed and carried when the stand is not required for the support of sheets or books of music.

The said invention consists of the parts described and claimed as follows:

In the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the open stand.. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the case when all the parts are inclosed within the central tube or body ofthe stand. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the lower part of the tube, showing the legs attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a view of the bottom of the tube with the legs cut ofi'. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the top of the tube; and Fig. 6 is a plan of the washer at the base of the tube, for clamping the legs of the stand when in use. Fig. 7 is a transverse section through the case or tube, showing longitudinal grooves for the traverse therein of the legs of the stand.

In the drawing, A is the central tube or body of the stand. B B B are the legs. C is a cap, secured to the tube A by a bayonet attachment at c. D is a stem, to which the musicrack E is attached by a clamp and strap-joint, F, which is regulated by a thumb-screw, f. The rack E is made to fold up, and has suspended to it by strap-hooks a jointed and folding ledge or rest, G, for a book or sheet of music. In the top of the cap C is a hollow thumb-screw, H, having a split stem, as seen in Fig. 5. By setting this screw hard down upon the cap C the stem'D ofthe rack is held at any desired point of elevation, bein g clamped within the split stem of the screw H. The legs B slide in holes in the bottom of the tube A and in guides a, slotted out of the interior of the said tube. The legs are also jointed to a ring, B2, within the tube A. .l is a thumbscrew, inserted in the bottom of. the tube A through a washer, K, provided with a recess containing a coiled spring, lo, as seen in Fig. 3. The said washer has its circumference indented in order that the legs B may slide past it., and the office of the spring 7c is to press back the said washer, in order to conveniently make room for the sliding of the legs B.

The complete operation of these` several parts is as follows: The stand being in the conveniently-portable form of a closed case, as seen in Fig. 2, can be readily transformed into a stand for use, as seen in Fig. 1, by malring the following-named simple adjustments: Remove the cap C, and take out of the tube A the stem D, rack E, and rest G. Unfold them, and adjust them to each other. Replace the cap C, and insert the stem l) through the thumb-screw H, which screw hard down when the stem I) has been inserted far enough. Next, slacken the thumb-screw J, and turn the washer K until its indentations or half-holesMJ coincide with the legs B; then draw the legs out of the case A as far they can be drawn, and turn the washer K until its circumference bears upon all three of the legs B, thereby I spreading them out. Now, screw hard up the thumb-screw J, and the legs will be clamped, and the music-stand be complete, ready for any minor adjustments of the parts for either angle or height of rack.

When no longer required for use, the several parts can be readily returned within the case A, when the said case can be carried in the hand, belt, or pocket, forming thus a neat, durable, light, and convenient portable artible.

Having thus fully described this improved tubular music stand and case as of my invention, I claim- 1. The case A,provided with longitudinal guide-grooves a a a, for the traverse of the legs B, as hereinbet'ore described. 4
