My invention relates to .building construction, and particularly to a novel device for .securing intersecting metal frames for openings. n Y
An object of my invention is to provide a simple and e'l'lcctive means for preventing the separation of aA pair of intersecting metal frame members, which can be readily used by inexperienced workmen. y
My invention is intended for use in cooperation with a pair of interitting metal frames and comprises a tongue struck out of the metal of one member, and adapted to be bent through a registering aperture in the complementary frame member, thus securing the two members against separation.
My invention will be more readily understoody by reference to the accompanying drawings in which l Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing a horizontal and two vertical intersecting Jtrame members and my invention in cooperation therewith; j Y
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing my fastening device;
Figs?) is a plan view;
Fig. l is a horizontal sectional view on the line 444e of Fig. 1.l Y
Referringl to the drawings, it'will be seen that I have illustrated vertical frame members anda lnnf/iontal frame member 11. Interltting, sliding, interlocking` engagement ot the members is effected by the gusset `or plate liavingtlie right angular portion 12. The :trame members 10-11 are each provided with bent ianges 13 for the reception ot the bent {ianges 1li ot the right ai'igular portion '12. vThe gusset may be formed as a right angular projection of either the vertical or the horizontal trame members, whichever yform is most convenient, the free pro'-v jection of vthe gussetbeing adapted to slidably engage the complementary `frame mem-p` ber. frame memberv is'providedj with inwardly projecting tongues 15 on eachside of the channel 16,'the tongues being struck out of the metal ofy the channels.
The aperture from which the tongue 'is As illustrated,best in Fig.2,the vertical` struck out is elongated at 15csfor th'epurl pose tobelater descr bed. -On the sidesot' the gusset '12, I'Vprovide an aperture `1j9 which, when the raine'members are in their final position, Willregister.with thetongue 15' andA aperturel 15a inthe complementary mem-v 'Foi convenience fin ascertaining the poi at which' the frames are in perfect inal position, I provide the registering apertures 17,-18 through which af nail or vpin may be inserted'for temporary holding. It' desired,
the frame membersy may be provided withV the struck loutA ribbon projections 2()Y which will serve as anchors for plaster. These plaster anchors are morefully described in my' eopending application Serial. No. 304,811 ile'dof even date herewith. Y
When theA frame members are temporarily set by means of the fpins inthe apertures 1757-18 ay 'simple tool is inserted through the apertures 19fand'15a'tlie tongue hooked and drawn thrughthe aperture 19 ofi the projection 12. f The tongue is then bent down against the'channel'lGofthe member 1() thus cov-y ering ltl'ielowe'r flange 'of Athe projection 12 and preventing the separation of the .frame members, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.y
Ifidesired,` a iwood block, c not shown, may bei'iisertedwithin the channels 16 and secured bynails` passing through the aper- Asbest seen'inFigQZthe tongue 15 is projectedv sliglitly'inwardly Vfrom the face of the channels thus avoiding the possibility of the tonguel catching the lower edge of the pojection 12 when assembly is being effect e 'f As shownat 15?) on the rightliand side of Fig. 1, the tongue isr slit farther. downward a. j
than the `bottom of the-opening 19 in the plate. Thuslthe tendency Vin bending thev tongue over will beto pull downward on the plate and insure. a tight joint; rIlias. 1t. is seen that my ,invention con-1k templates la simple andfeconomical means of securely; finaintaining' f intersecting frame members'againstseparation. By the-use of myvdevice frame members such as illustrated can beY simply Aand economically set up by 'Y unskilled laborwith a great saving of cost.
Obviously the gusset may be formed as a.
' part of one of the frame members or may be formed separate and one leg thereof Welded -to the frame member. It is obvious also thatV r 5 jthe tongue clip may be .formed on either the horizontal or the vertical frame member, or
V"on-one Vvertical frame member and on the v horizontal frame member. w Y
Modifications and variations may thus be made of the invention herein disclosed with# in' the skill of the mechanic, and- I do. not
