This invention relates generally to door latches and' consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly point- 'ed out in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 is a case plate that is preferably mounted upon the inner side of a door and isprovided at its forward edge with a lateral flange 2 that is secured to an edge of the door. 3 is a latch bolt that corresponds in configurationto and is pivotally mounted similar to the latch bolt 10 shown and described in-, co-pending applicationbearing Ser. #123,535, and 4 is a spring sleeved upon the pivot 5 and having portions 6 and 7 respect vely engaging the case plate 1 and a pin 8 carried by the inner end of the bolt for normally holding the latter in projected position.
In the present instance the bolt 3 may be retracted from the outside of the door by suitable mechanism designated generally by the numeral 9 and preferably corresponding to that shown and described in the copending application aforesaid, but is retracted from the inside of the door by an improved remote control mechanism. As
shown, this remote control mechanism comprises three links 10, 11, and 12 respectively and a pivoted handle 13. Preferably the forward link 10 is pivotally connected atits forward end to the pin 8 carried by the bolt 3 and extends rearwardly therefrom over jecting laterally from the forward link :10
at the rear end thereof, and is provided at its rear end with a circular opening 17 that receives a bolt 18 threadedly engaging the rear link 12 at the forward end thereof. Intermediate its tends the link 11--i s provided with a longitudinally extending slot 20 that receives the shank of the stud 14; on the case plate, and is provided preferably above this slot with an upstanding lug or projection 21.
Thus the slotted connection between the intermediate link 11 andthe forward link 10 will permit the latter to reciprocate independently of the former, forinstance'when the bolt 3 is retracted from the outside of the door. The rear link 12 is relatively long and is pivotally connected at its rear end to the lower end of the pivoted handle 13. As shown, the pivot 22 for the handle is located above the link 12 and is secured to the inner panel 23 of the door.
With constructions of this kind it is desirable to also use the inside handle 13 to render the bolt 3 and outside bolt retracting mechani'sm inoperative. In the. present instance this is accomplished by the provision of a dog 24 that is adapted to be actuated by the intermediate link 11 to lock the rearward movement of the forward link 10. As shown, this dog 24 is inverted L.-shape in form and is located between the intermediate link 11 and the case plate 1. Preferably the arm 25 of the dog is pivoted at its lower end upon the stud 14 on the case plate and is pivotally connected at its upper end to a stud 26 projecting laterally inwardly from the upstanding lug 21 on the intermediate link 11. The forwardly projecting arm 27 of the dog is preferably bevelled as shown at 28 and is adapted to engage an inturned lateral flange 29 at the rear end of'the forward link 10. Normally the stud 16 on the forward link 10 is at the forward end of the slot 15 in the intermediate link 11, hence the latter may be reciprocated independently of the forward link 10 to actuate the dog 24. "Preferably a leaf spring 30 is located between the intermediate link 11 and the heads 31 and 32 respectively of the studs, and elongated washers 33 and 34 are placed in overlapping relation between the intermediate link 11 and dog 24. As shown, the washer 33 is provided at one end with an elongated slot 35 that receives the stud 26 and is provided at its other end with a circular opening 36 that receives the stud 14, while the washer 34 is provided at one end with an elongated slot 37 that registers with the slot 15 and receives the stud 16, and is provided at its other end with a circular opening 38 that receives the stud 14. Thus the washer 33 obviates friction between the dog 24 and the intermediate link 11 and the washer 34 obviates friction between said intermediate link 11 and the forward link 10; As a result the forward link 10 cannot cause' the intermediate link 11 to accidentally actuate the dog 24, for instance when the forward link 10 is returning or moving forwardly from its rearward bolt retracting position. Before being assembled the spring 30 is curved longitudinally, hence when it is applied as shown it exerts a pressure against the intermediate link 11. I
In use, the links 10, 11 and 12 respectively may be moved rearwardly as a unit to retract the bolt by rotating the handle 13 in an anticlockwise direction. When the handle 13 is then released the spring 4 will automatically restore the bolt 3, links and handle to normal position. When it is desired to render the bolt 3 and outside bolt retracting mechanism 9 inoperative, the handle 13 may be rotated in a clockwise direction so as to cause the rear and intermediate links 12 and 11 respectively to move forwardly as a unit; To move forwardly as a unit and cause the dog 24 to swing about the stud 14 from normal full line position to the dotted position (see Fig. 2) so that the arm 27 of the dog will engage or be immediately in rear of the inturned flange 29 of theforward link 10, the leaf spring 30 will then automatically maintain the links 11, 12, dog 24 and handle 13 in operative dogging position. To release the bolt 3 and permit retraction thereof from either the inside or outside of the door,
the inside handle 13 may then be moved back to neutral position so as to cause the links 11 and 12 to move longitudinally rearwardly and thereby cause the arm 27 to be raised out of the path of the inturned flange 29 of the forward link 10.
,While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantage of our invention will be readily apparent, we desire to have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and means for retracting said bolt including links connected to the bolt and operable independently of each other for retracting said bolt, of means for actuating one of said links, and means for dogging the other of said links including means movable into the path of the first mentioned link and operable by the actuating means aforesaid.
2. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and a reiracting member therefor, of independent retracting means inclnding a series of substantially aligned links operable from a point remote to said bolt, and means for rendering the bolt retracting member aforesaid inoperative including a dog movable into the path of one of said links and operable by another of said links.
3. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and a retracting member therefor, of a second member for retracting the bolt, a dog movable into the path of the second mentioned member for rendering both the first and second mentioned members inoperative, and means terminally connected to the second mentioned member movable in one direction to actuatethe second mentioned member and movable in another direction to actuate the dog.
4. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and a retracting member therefor, of a second member for retracting the bolt, a dog movable into the path of-the second mentioned member for rendering both the first and second mentioned members inoperative, and a reciprocating member having a slotted connection with the second mentioned member, said reciprocating member being adapted to actuate the second mentioned member when said reciprocating member is moved in one direction and being adapted to actuate the dog when said reciprocating member is moved in the opposite direction.
5. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of means for retracting said bolt including a link connected thereto, a second link having a slotted connection with the first link,'and means operable by the second link for rendering the first link inoperative.
6. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of a plurality of substantially aligned links movable as a unit in one direction for retracting said bolt, and means for dogging said bolt including means operable b one of said links for rendering another 0 said links inoperative for retracting said bolt.
7. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of means for retracting said bolt including two. links operable from a polnt remote to said bolt, a dog engageable with one of said links and operable by the other of said links, one of said links being connected directly to the bolt and having a slotted connection with the other of said links whereby.
said bolt and associated links may move together independently of the other of said links, and means between said links preventing accidental actuation of said dog and associated link when said bolt and associated link are actuated independently as described.
8. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and a retracting member therefor, of a second bolt retracting member projecting rearwardly from the bolt, a dog movable into the path of the second mentioned member for rendering one of the members aforesaid inoperative, and a reciprocating member in substantial alignment with the second mentioned member and having a slotted connection' with said second mentioned member, said reciprocating member being adapted to actuate the second mentioned member when said reciprocating member is moved toward the bolt and being adapted to actuate the dog when said reciprocating member is moved away from the bolt.

In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of means for retracting said bolt including two links operable from a point remote to the bolt, a dog engageable with one of said links and operable by the other of said links, one of said links being connected directly to the bolt and having a slotted connection with the other of said links whereby the other of said links may alternately actuate the first mentioned link and dog, and a washer between said links preventing said first mentioned link from accidentally actuatmg said second mentioned link and dog when said first mentioned link is actuated.

In combination, a door having substantially parallel longitudinal edges, a latch bolt at one longitudinal edge of said door, means for retracting said bolt including a member upon one side of said door at a point substantially midway between the longitudinal edges of said door, an operating connection between said member and bolt including a pair of links in substantial alignment with the bolt and constituting a rearward extension thereof, and means for preventing retraction of said bolt including an element associated with one of said links and movable thereby intothe path of the other of said links.

In a latch mechanism for doors and the like, the combination with a case plate attachable to one side of a door at-an edge thereof, means altogether removed from and at a point remote to said case plate for retracting said bolt, an operating connection between said means and bolt including two parts movable as a unit in one direction to retract the bolt and movable one relatively to the other to retain the bolt in projected position, and dogging means associated with one of said parts vand movable thereby into the path of the other of said parts so as to serve as a stop therefor and thereby retain the bolt aforesaid in projected position.

In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of actuating means for said bolt including a pair of links arranged in substantial alignment with the bolt and constituting a rearward extensionthereof, one of said links being connected directl to said bolt, the other of said links being operatively connected to the first link,and means for preventing retraction of said first link and bolt including an element associated with the second link and movable thereby into the path of the first link. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of actuating means therefor including two links, one of said links being connected directly to the bolt, and the other of said links having a slot-ted connection with the first link, said two links being movable as a unit in one direction to retract the bolt, and the second link being movable relative to the first link,
.and means associated with the second link for rendering the first link inoperative when the said second link is moved relative to the first link as aforesaid.

In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of actuating means for said bolt including two links, the first link being connected directly to the bolt, the second link having a slotted connection with the first link, said two links being movable as a unit to retract the bolt, and the second link being movable relative to the first link, a pivotally mounted dog movable by the second link into the path of the first link to prevent retraction by the first link of the said bolt when the said second link is moved relatively to the said first link, and means associated with one of said links for retainin one of said links and said dob in an adjusted position,

In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and a reciprocating member operatively associated therewith, and actuating means for the bolt including a sliding link, of means for dogging the latch bolt including a pivoted element engageable with said reciprocating member and operable by said link.

In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, :1 slidably mounted member operatively connected thereto and constituting a rearward extension thereof, of means for retracting said latch bolt including remote control mechanism operatively associated with said slidably mounted member and having a sliding part constituting a rearward extension of said slidable member, and means for preventing retraction of said latch bolt including a. pivotally mounted element movable by the sliding part of said remote control mechanism into operative abutting relation with respect to said slidably mounted member.

In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and actuating means for the bolt including mechanism operable from the outer side of a door, of actuating means for the bolt operable from the inner side of a door and including two slidably connected reciprocating members, and means act'uable by one of said members into engagement with the other of said members to render the outside mechanism inoperative.
20. In a latch, the combination with a m0vable latch bolt, of actuating means for the bolt including mechanism connected to the bolt and operable from the outer side of a door, actuating means for the bolt operable from the inner side of a door and including a link connected to said bolt and constituting a rearward extension thereof, a second link slidably connected to the first link, and means for rendering the mechanism aforesaid inoperative for retracting the bolt including an element movable by the second mentioned link into the path of the first mentioned link.
21. In a latch mechanism, the combination with a latch bolt, of two independently operable actuating means, one of said actuating means for the bolt including two operatively 'connected relatively movable reciprocating
