Be it known that GSTAF IvAn BARCLAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne -and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to window latches and is particularly applicable toswinging' windows.- One of the objects of theinvention is the provision of a simple construction'of window latch so arranged that the handle will first release the detent and then upon continuation of the force applied to the handle will swing the window to an open position. Another object is the provision of a window latch in which the handle may be used in closing the window and-the detent has a swinging movement relative to the handle during the closing so that the locking-of the window in closed position does not affect the handle. Further objects of the invention reside lin the novel features of construction,combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

For normally holding the detent 15 in locking engagement with the lockingbracket 19 there is the coil spring 21 surrounding the reduced portion of the pin 10 and having its opposite ends respectively secured to the enlarged end 14 of the pin 10 and the detent y15, the arrangement being such that the spring'always tends to rotate the detent in a clockwise direction looking at Figure 2. For disengagingthe detent 15 from the locking bracket the-handle 13 is provided' with the lug: 22- forming a shoulder engageable with a'corresponding shoulder upon the lug 23 with' which,l the detent^ 15 is provided, the
For facilitating the Closingof the Window the handle 13 is provided with the lug 24 engageable with the base of the supporting bracket to limit the rotation of the handle ina clockwise direction looking at Figure 2.
Thus with this arrangement, the handle may be gripped to swing the window to its closed position and there is no liability of injuring,- the fingers by so doing since the handle is prevented from swinging inwardly toward the window beyond `its normal position. Furthermore, owing to the fact that'the detentis movable relative to the handle it is free to swing outwardly past the locking bracket and then to swing inwardly over the saine during the closing` ot the window without affecting the handle.
llVhat I claim as my invention is:
l. The combinationwith a support provided with a pin, ot a detent mounted upon said pin, a handle also mounted upon said pin, shoulders upon said detent and handle for swinging` said detent from said handle upon 'swinging of said handle in one direction, said shoulders permitting` the swing'w ing of said detent independently ot said handle, and a coil springl surrounding a portion of said pin for swingingsaid detent in a direction opposite to that taken when actuatedV by said handle.
2. The combination with a frame and a closure member movable relative thereto, of a shoulder uponsaid frame, a supporting bracket upon said closure member provided with a pin, a detent mountedupon said pin and having` an inclined nose adapted to have al sliding engagement with said shoulder upon movement of said closure member toward said trame, a handle upon said pin, means for swinging said detent from said handle in direction to disengage said de` tent from said shoulder, said means permitting the swinging of: said detent ind-e pendently oli said handle when said detent is being` swung by engaging` said shoulder, means i'or swingring` said detent in the opposite direction, means upon said handle for` ,limiting the swinging of said handle in the opposite direction and a coil Spring sur rounding` said pin and engaging said detent for swinging said detent into engagement with said shoulder.
3. In a Window latch, a support, a. detent pivotally mounted on` said support, a lever type handle pivotally mounted at one end coaxially with said detent, engaging portions formed on said detent and handle. adjacent said pivot for swingingv said detent through said handle in one direction, but permitting an nidi-pendent swinging?,` of said detent in the opposite direction.

6. In a window latclnthe combination with a. sash. oi a detent pivotally mounted thereon, a handle pivoted at one end coaxially with said detent, cooperating` portions iormed on said detent and the pivoted end of said handle tor directly actuating,- said detent during' the movement of the handle in one direction, said handle beingoperable by swingingthe .tree end thereof.
7. In a window latch, a support, a detent pivotally mounted. on said support, a handle pivoted at one end tio-axially with said detent, fcpoperating.portions 'Formed on Said detent and the pivoted end oll said handle for i'noving said detent to releasing position thro-ugh said handle, and a spring housed within said handle and connected to said detent for normally retaining` said detent in locking position.
