My said invention relates to improvements in hose or sock supportersof the type which v encircles the leg above the calf thereof and I has a depending sock engaglng clip.

Such garters usually have one end of the loop forming portion detachably connected to the customary pad by means enabling the adjustment of the loop for difi'erent sizes of leg and also embodying a swivel connection which will enable the band forming the loop to automatically accommodate itself to different shapes of leg; i. e., those having more or less pronounced calr".

There a man has not much flesh on the calf of his leg, the garter has a tendency to slip down, causing considerable annoyance and if tightened with aview to preventing slipping, is likely to interfere with proper blood circulation.

My said invention aims to provide a garter which will be ifree'from the aforesaid objection, and which will have a detachable connection tree from such swiveling action.

The invention further aims to provide a connection which may be readily converted at will from a non-swivel to a swivel form and vice versa, according to the desire of the wearer, and which will be capable of adjustment to different positions of angularity and be held fixedly in such adjusted position.

WVith these and, other objects in view, the invention includes the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, the precise nature and scope of the invention being defined by the claimsappended hereto.

In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring by reference characters to this drawing the numeral 1, (Fig. l) designates the elastic tape which encircles the leg, one end of which is suitably connected (as by stitching), to the fabric web or pad member 2 which carries the means for attachment to the stocking, such means being indicated con ventionally at 3 and eing connected to the member 2 by an adjustable connection (indicated conventionally at at), which may comprise an elastic tape and slider. The tree eno of the leg encircling tape 1 is passed through the elongated loop of the member 5 and doubled back upon itself and connected to the slider 7 for adjusting the band 1 according to size of leg in the customary manner. The member 5 is in the form of a wire loop having its ends connected by the customary means indicated at 5 or in any suitable or desired manner, this connection lying between the laycrs of the elastic tape.

According to the form shown in Figs. 1 and l to l, the cross bar or member of the loop not engaged by the tape carries a laterally projecting loop portion or elongated eye 5* adapted to engage attaching means which is I so constructed as also to be used either to pre vent the loop from sidewise or s viveling action or to allow it to swivel, and also to lock it against swiveling at any one of a plurality of angles or positions. In the form shown in these figures, the said attaching means takes the form of a pair of buttons or headed projections 6 and 6 similar to the single one usually employed), which are rigidly carried by a plate member 6 provided with means whereby it may be readily attached to the web or pad, which means may conveniently take the form of the slots 6 through which stitches may be passed. The loop 5 is preferably provided with widened out or deflected portions forming internal recesses 7) adapted to permit the entrance oi the head oi button or projection 6 while the head of button 6* ii passing through the open cent r of the main loop. the portions of the loop or eye member 5" on each side of the recesses 6 being restricted so as to embrace the shanks beneath the heads and prevent accidental disconnection.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that the connection may be made with the same faeility as with the single button commonly employed but that after connection with both buttons in the loop or eye 5", swiveling or lateral movement is absolutely prevented.

Should the user, due to shape of leg, desire to lock the loop to the pad at a different angle, it is only necessary to eiiect the connection as shown in either Figure 1 1' Figure 1, thereby giving a range 0' a plurality of positions in which the connection is held against swiveling.

If the purchaser should, however, desire to use the garter with a swiveling action, all that is necessary is to enter the stud or button 6 through the space formed by recesses b and slide the loop until said button rests in the end of the loop 5 as shown in Fig. 1. Instead of using buttons for loop engagement, I may use books as shown in Fig.

As an alternative construction wi'iere the convertible or adjustable feature is not desired, I may use a construction such as illus trated in Fig. 3, in which swiveling or lateral pivotal movement is prevented by the elongated stud member 6.

Instead of having the studs arranged in spaced relation in the line of pull as in the form first described, I may arrange them in a line at right angles thereto as shown in Fig. 4, the free bar of the loop having an arm 5 extending parallel thereto and forming elongated recess to receive the two studs or buttons, the connection and dis *onnection being ell'ected by a movement as .ght angles to the line of movement of the first form referred to. Fig. 4 shows the locked connec tion and Fig. l the swivel connection.

If a partial swivel connection is desired, only the lower stud or button need be entered in the recess.

I claim:

1. In a garter, a pad member, a band memher having one end (.OTlllQtttGtl thereto, an attaching member -arried by the other end of the band having a narrow elongated recess 'lisposed lengthwise ot' the band, and a plu- "ality of studs carried by said pad member and in a line lengthwise oi the band and engageahle in said recess.

2. In a garter, a pad member, a hand memher having one end attached to the pad mam her, attaching means carried at the opposite end of the hand member. said attaching means comprising a main loop having one side adapted for hand engagement and its opposite side provided with a narrow clongated supplemental loop disposed at right angles to the main loop, and a plurality ol headed studs carried by the pad member and engageahle in the recess formed by said supplemental loop.

3. In a garter, a pad member, a hand member having one end attached to the pad member, attaching means carried at the opposite end of the band member, said attaching means comprising a main loop having one side adapted for band engagement and its opposite side provided with an ehmgatcd supplemental loop disposed at right angles to the main loop, and a plurality ot headed studs carried by the pad member and engageahlc in the re formed by said supplemental loop, said supplemental loop having recc in the intermediate portions of its side to form a space to admit the head of one of the studs, the sides of the loop adjacent said receases being oi less distance apart than the heads of the studs.

4. In a garter, a pad member, a band n'icmher having one end attached to the pad memher, and attaching means for the opposite end of the band member, said attaching means comprising a main loop having one side adapted for band engagement and its opposite side provided with an elongated. supplemental loop disposed approximately central.- ly thereof and extei'iding at right angles to the end of the band, said supplemental loop providing an elongated means open at its inner end and closed at its outer end, and stud means carried by the pad member and engaging said loop adjacent its closed outer end and adjacent open inner end.

5. In a garter, a pad member, a hand mem her having one end attached to the pad member, and attaching means for connecting the opposite end of the band member to the pad member comprising amember having a relatively narrow recess elongated in the direction of pull of the hand and terminating in a closed end and means carried by the pad engaging said closed end to sustain the pull of the hand and also engaging the sides of the recess in rear of said closed end to prevent swiveling of the loop on said pad.

6. A garter having a pad member provided with a plurality of studs and, a hand memher having a single narrow recess elongated, along the line ot pull of the hand. said recess being engageahle with one or more of said studs whereby the garter connection may be made a swiveling or norrswivelin g one at the will of the wearer.

7. In a garter, a pad member. a hand mombor having one end permanently attached to the pad member, and connecting and disconnecting means for the free end of the band member comprising a pair of spaced apart studs carried by the pad member, and a main loop carried h vthe free end of the ban d memher having an approximately centrally disposed supplemental loop provided with a single narrow elongated recess open at one end and closed at the other and enga goahle with one or both 01": said studs, said studs when in position in said recess snugly fitting between the opposite walls of said recess.
