'lhis type of bottle stopper is particularly adapted for use at the present time with bottles containing cologne, toilet Water, hair tonic,iand various other similar liquids.
In carrying out the invention the stopper made in accordance therewith is so coi'istructed as to include a body member having a shankv adapted to fit into the neck of a bottle. The shank is fitted Wit-h a cup suitably c'onnected thereto and forming la closure or casing for a valve device which permits the passage of the liquid from the'bottle but prevents the passage of a liquidto the bottle. The peripheral portion of the head of the body member may be provided with flattened sides, as indicated at 13. l/Vhile only two of these flattened sides are illustrated it Will be understood that any desired number of them may be employed. Also in the peripheral portion of the head 10 there is a circumferential groove 11i. In this form of the invention there are oppositely disposed grooves 15 and 16 in the Walls of the shank 11 which extend into the head and terminate at the surface defining the groove 14, these grooves forming passages for the liquid to flow from the bottle When the stopper is in place in the neck thereof. At the inner end of the shank there is a recess 17 the purpose of which Will herein after be more fully described. n
Associated with the body member I employ a cup member 18. Although the body member is preferably made of porcelain and the cup member of a suitable metal it will be understood that these parts may be constructed of any material adapted to serve the purpose. In the bottom of the cup there is an opening or port 19 and the edge of the cup as indicated at 20, is preferably spun or otherwise inturned into a recess 21 provided for this purpose in the shank 11 in order that the cup may be sxviveled to the shank. The cup is connected to the shank in such a manner as to provide a chamber therein which includes the recess 17 at the end of the shank. Within the cup there is a valve Washer 22 made of sheet cork, rubber or similar material in Which there is `a centrally disposedopening or port preferably of the same diameter or configuration as that of the opening 19 in the bottom of the cup. The cup member also contains a valve 24 which in this form of the invention has a circular base adapted to bear against the valve Washer 22 and extending from the base the other portion of the valve, as illustrated, is pyramidal having' four sides at the edges of which there material and which visot` slightly greater.

ln the use of this stopper, as will now be apparent, when the bottle is tilted or inclined to pour the liquid therefrom the valve automatically leaves its sea-t and the liquid may low through the ports i9 and 23m the bottom of the cup and'in the valve washer, and the spaces around the valve to the passages provided bythe grooves l and 16, thence to the passage provided bythe groove 14and to the passages provided by the flattened sides of the head of the stopper.y It will be clearly obvious that in attempts to refill the bottle either by pressure positive or negative, or otherwise, the valve will automatically return to its seat against the valve washer which in turn seats against the face or bottom of the cup, thereby preventing a liquid from flowing into the bott-le.
By reference to lligureV 4 it will be seen that the stopper may beso constructed that the cylindrical walls ot the cup member are screw threaded, as indicated at 27, in which case, as will be understood, the surface of the bore oi1 the neck of the bottle is similarly threaded, as indicated at 28 so that the collar is caused to engage between these screw threaded portions in securing the stopper in position. ln this. structure the edge of the cup is also spun into a circumferential groove provided therefor in the shank of the body member and adapted to have a slight longitudinal play on the body member.'y rihe shank in this instance is provided with a boss 29 kso placed that when the head is engaged and turned in one direction byV a suitable tool the boss engages the cndoi the screw thread 27 causing the cup toy be turned ywith the head and the shank whereby the stopper may be turned to'position ,causing the intervening portionl of the collar to. be engaged between the screw threadsk of the cup and the screw threads of the bore of the neck of the bottle whereas when the head of the body member is turnedin the opposite direction this boss 29 will clear and will not be engaged with the screw threads of the cup whereby while the stopper may be thus turned to place in the neck of the bottle it cannot be removed therefrom by a reverse operation.
' It' will be obvious that the particular form and construction ot the valve member may be varierL as well as the arrangement of the passages or ducts by which tne liquid may enter the bottle. As shown'in Figures 5 and 6 the body member ot they stopper ymay be provided with a set of three grooves, 30, 3l and 821m equally yspaced positions and each forming a passage making communication between the chamber withinthe cup and the peripheral lgroove in the head of the body member. Also in this structure the valve member may be spherical, as indicated at 38, while therecess at the end ci. the shank may be formed to provide tor a limited longitudinal movement of the valve. n
By reference to Figures'? and 8 it will also be.l apparent that the shank ot the body member may be so constructed that'the'chanr ber therein is adapted to receive a cylindrical valve 34, the walls defining the chamber being curved as indicated at 25, and of any desired number so as to provide the necessary passages at the sides of the valve. In this structure there is a'.-central passage 36 and lateral passage BTInakingv communication between the valve chamber and the peripheral groove in the head of the body member. In this instance the inner end ot the valve member 34 may be made conical as indicated at 34. l
In the forms of the invention as hereinbefore described the stopper is so constructed that in its entirety it is adapted to lie within Y the neck of the bottle. By reference to Figure 9, however, it will be obvious that the stopper may be so formed that a portion thereof lies within the neck of the' bottleVv and a portion thereof extends beyond the same. `In this structure the head 88 of the body member is provided with a iange 39 adapted to contact with the end of the neck of a bottle and the body member also includes a stem extending upwardlyv therefromand adapted to receive a cap or cover 41. ln this structure there is a centrally disposed bore or passage 42 eX- tending through the stem and the body member making communieation with the valve chamber at the inner end ofthe shank of the body member. The valve chamber in this able configuration. -In this form of the devicefthe face of the bore of the neck ol the bottle is threaded, as indicated at 45 while correspondinglythe cylindrical wall of the cup 46 is threaded, as indicated at 47. The edge of the cup, as hereinbefore described, is also turned into a recess provided for this purpose in the shank of the body member, as indicated at 48 and the shank is formed with a boss 49 in a manner similar to that shown in Figure t whereby the stopper may be turned in one direction and the boss caused to engage with the end of the screw thread of the cup to force the stopper to place with the flange 39 bearing against the end of the neck of the bottle and the collar of rubber or cork intervening between the screw threads on the neck and those on the cup whereby when the body member is turned in the opposite direction the boss does not engage the screw thread so that by turning the body member in the opposite direction it merely swivels on the cup member and thereby the stopper is locked in position in the neck of the bottle. As in other forms of the invention in this case there 4is a valve washer 50 having an opening or tion of the stopper. It will also be understood y that the stopper device may be inserted to any'desired extent in the neck of the bottle. In some instances the outer face of the stopper may be flush or substantially iiush with the end of the neck of the bottle and the neck provided with lugs 53 for receiving and maintaining the usual cap thereon and in any event the outer surface of the body member of the stopper may be provided with suitable recesses, for example as indicated at 54, for receiving a tool by means of which the stopper may be turned to place in the neck of the bottle. Obviously also the locking device, as hereinbefore described, is the equivalent of a ratchet, any form of which may be employed whereby when the body of the stopper is turned in one direction it will carry the cup member with it whereas when turned in the opposite direction the cup after having been seated will remain in place. Still furthermore it will be apparent that in some instances particularly in a structure in which the walls of the cup are not threaded and the stopper is inserted an appreciable distance in the neck of the bottle, for example, as illustrated in Figure 1, the cup member may be secured rigidly to the shank of the body member by having a portion thereof indented into one or both of the grooves forming the longitudinal passages or into a separate groove provided for this purpose.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a bottle stopper, a body member having a head and a shanl, a cup having the screw thread formed therein and being connected on the said shank to turn thereon, here being a chamber within the cup between the same and the end of the shank, a valve movable in the said chamber, the cup having a port in the base thereof and the body member, a passage therein for the flow of the iquid, and means carried by the shank cooperating with the cup for turning` the cup by the shank when the shank is turned in one direction and permitting the cup to remain stationary when the shank is turned in the opposite direct-ion.
:2. In a bottle stopper', a body member having` a head and a shank, a cup having a port in the base thereof, screw threads in the walls thereof and its edge turned into a recess in the shank to be swiveled thereon, there being a chamber in the cup and between the same and the end of the shank, a valve movable in the chamber, there being a passage in the body member for the flow of the liquid, and means carried by the shank and adapted to engage a portion of the screw thread of the cup to turn the saine with the shank when the latter is turned in one direction and to permit the cup to remain stationary when the shank is moved in the opposite direction.
3. In a bottle stopper, a body member having a head and a shank, a cup having a port in the base thereof, screw threads in the walls thereof and its edge turned in to a recess in the shank to be siviveled thereon, there being a chamber in the cup and between the same and the end of the shank, a valve movable in the chamber, there being a passage in the body member for the flow of the liquid, and a boss on the said shank positioned to engage a portion of the screw threaded walls of the cup when the shank is turned in one direction to cause the cup to move therewith and to permit the cup to remain stationary when the shank is turned in the opposite direction.
In a bottle stopper, a solid body member having a head adapted to fit the neck of a bottle and a shank of smaller diameter extending therefrom, the said shank having a recess forming a passage in the face thereof and extending from the inner end of the shank to the said head, a cup connected to the said shank and extending appreciably below the same to provide a chamber within the cup and between the saine and the end of the shank, and a valve within the said cham` ber adapted to bear against the face'of the cup and to be limited in its movement between the same and the end of the shank, there being a valve port in the base of the said cup.
5. In a bottle stopper, a solid body member having a head adapted to lit the neck of the bottle and an integral shank extending therefrom and of smaller diameter, the outer face of the head being conical and the surface of the shank being provided with a longitudinal groove forming a passage extending from the head to the end of the shank, a cup connected Cil toand extending from the said sha-nk and i forming a valve chamber therein Which extends from the base of the cup to the base of the shank, the base of the cup being provided with a valve port, and a valve Within the said chamber adapted to seat against the base of the cup and to belimited in its movement between the saine and the end of the shank.
.6. In a bottle stopper, a solid body member having a head adapted to fit the neck of a bottle and an integral shank of smaller diameter extending therefrom, the peripheral portion of the head being provided With a flattened tace and the surface of the shank With a groove forming a longitudinal passage extending from the head to the end of the shank,
a cup Connected to and extending from the shank to provide a chamber' Within the cup and bet-Ween the end of the shank, the base of the @up having a valve port therein, a valve Washer Within the cup, the said valve Washer having a port therein, and a valve lying Within the eup and adapted to seat against the said valve-Washer and limited in its movement between the same and the end of the said shank.

In a bottle stopper, a body member having a head adapted to fit the neck of the bottle and an integral shank extending therefrom and of smaller diameter, the surface of the shank being provided With a longitudinal groove forming a passage extending Jfrom the head to the end oi the shank, a cup connected to the said shank and forming a valve chamber therein, the said chamber communieating with the longitudinal groove at the end of the shank, the base of the cup being provided with a valve port, anda valve Within the said chamber'adapted to rest against the base of the Cup and be limited in its movement between the same andthe end of the shank. l
8. `Ina bottle stopper, a body member having a head adapted to iit'the neck yof the-bottle and an integral shank extending therefrom and of smaller diameter, the surface of the shank being provided With a longitudinal groove forming a passage extending from the head to the end of the shank, a cup eonnected to the said shank and forming a valve chamber therein which extends from the base of the Cup to' the base of the shank, the base of the cup being providedwith a valve port, and a valve Within the said Chamber of smaller diameter than the cup thereby 'facilitating the passage of liquid to the longitudinal groove when the same is positioned against the end of the shank.
