Description

Sept. 2, 1930. A gum 1,775,066
WATCH AND GOLF SCORE Filed July 27, 1929 INVENTOR v ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 2, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADOLPH BULOVA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO BULOVA WATCH COMPANY, INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK WATCH AND GOLF SCORE Application filed July 27,
The invention relates to a watch and golf score.
It has for its object to provide a simple device by means of which a golfer may keep his complete score for the game in connection with a time-piece.
The invention comprises a watch casing having end chambers provided with windows. Each of these chambers houses a series of nine number wheels and suitable means are provided for turning these number wheels, one at a time, by operating knobs outside of the case. 7
Further advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
Referring to the drawings formnig a part hereof, and in which one embodimentof the invention is illustrated:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the improved watch and golf score;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view on a larger scale with parts broken away and parts in section;
Fig.3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail sectional view on the line 55 of Fig.3.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 6 designates the case. The case is preferably oblong in form and-has a time-piece 7 suitably secured in a housing 8 in the central portion of the case, thus providing two end chambers 9. The usual stem 10 for winding and setting the time-piece extends beyond the case 6.
A series of nine number wheels is mounted in each end chamber beneath windows 11 in the case, and means are provided for turning said wheels one at a time. This means might be widely varied. As each of the series of number wheels and its operating parts are identical, a description of one will suflice for both.
The number wheels 12 are freely mounted on a stud or shaft 13, which is fixed in the case 6. Each of the number wheels bears 1929. Serial No. 381,583.
numerals from 0 to 9, and grooves 14 are provided between the numerals.
Friction means are provided for preventing the number wheels from turning. This friction means might be of any suitable character, and as illustrated comprises a spring member 15 having its ends secured in the case 6. This spring member lightly engages the grooves 14 and prevents the number wheels from rotating except when it is desired to turn one of them, by mechanism hereinafter described, for the purpose of scoring.
Means are provided for separately turning any one of the number wheels, and this means may be widely varied.
A squared pin 16, parallel and adjacent to the stud 13, is mounted in the case 6. An operating member 17 having a squared hole is slidably mounted on the pin 16. The operating member has two pins or fingers 18 projecting from it, and these ins engage the grooves 14. of one of the num er wheels. The arrangement is such that when the squared pin 16 is given a half revolution the number wheel will be advanced one notch or moved from one number to the consecutive number.
Means are provided for'moving the operating member 17 so as to cause it to engage any desired number wheel and for clearly indicating which wheel is being engaged.
An indicator 19 is slidably mounted on the pin 16 and passes through a slot 20 in the case. Numerals from 1 to 9 on the outside of the case are positioned alongside of the nine wheels of each series and designate which hole of the golf course the respective scores were made on. The indicator 19 points toward these numbers on the outside of the case.
The lower end of the indicator is bifurcated and the operating member 17 is positioned between the legs 21. It is thought that from the foregoing it will be apparent that, when the square pin 16 is rotated, the number wheel toward which the indicator is pointing will be turned.
Operating knobs 22 are secured on both ends of the pin 16 outside of the case 6, thus strokes he had taken for that hole.
enabling the number wheels to be actuated from either side of the case.
Means are provided for holding the indicator adjacent any one of the number wheels.
the indicator is brought up to the number wheel which it is desired to turn, this detent will engage its respective notch and properly position the indicator so that there will be no possibility of the operating member 17 turning two number wheels. It will also prevent the indicator from freely sliding in its slot, and insure its being in position for the following play after a playjhas beencompleted. The notches are shallow enough and the spring detent light enough so as not to interfere with sliding the indicator manually when desired. Other means might readily be employed for accomplishing the foregoing result.
Simple means are provided for holding the squared shaft 16 a proper position so that the fingers 18 of the operating member will maintain their correct relation to the grooves 14 of the number wheels.
Ears 25 are formed on the squared pin 16 near one of its ends. A flat spring 26 secured to the case engages these ears, as shown in Fig. 4. Thus, when the pin 16 is turned 180, or half a revolution, to advance one of the wheels 12 one number, the opposite side of the ears 25 will engage the spring. In addition to maintaining the operating member in .proper position, this acts as a click so that the user can easily tell by the feel as he is turning the knob 22 whenhe has advanced the number wheel one number.
In the operation of the device the player would start the game with all the number wheels in the Zero position. After playing the first hole going out on the golf course, he would bring the indicator to number 1 on either side and advance that number wheel by one of the knobs 22 the number of For the second hole he'would bring the indicator to number 2 and proceed in a similar manner until he had completed the game.
Many changes may be made in details of construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
