Description

BLOTTING APPLIANCE Filed May 19, 1924 YVENTOR Patented Au Jze, 1930' l UNITED STATE PA TEN i- FQ F rnoivrAs G. How s THOMAS, or BRISTOL, ENGLAND BLOTTTING APPLIANCE Application filed May 19, 1924., Serial No. 714,464, and in Great BritainApril 9, 192 a.
The invention relates chiefly to improye merits in blotting rollers to be USGClWltll fountain pens. The main object being to 7 provide an eflicient means at the sides of the rollers to prevent unwinding when in use,
revolves on a pin,-between arms; attached to, a frame fixed or screwed to any pen in any 7 suitable position for use as a blotter, either on the pen cap or body of the pen itself. V
I attain all these objects in various ways and the preferred manner of carrying out the invention is shown by Figures 1 to 6 inclusive 1 details of which are set forth in the following description and claims.
Figure 1 is a vertical section on line 11 d of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is an end elevationof Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 are elevations at right angles to each other.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure3. g
Figure 6 is a section online 66 of Fig: ure l. T The blotting rollersor refills are made of blotting paper, as shown by 1 in Figurel, or other absorbent; material. This material maybe white ,or any variation of color made from a long strip rolled on a center'core, as shown by 2 in Figure 1, fixed for tearing off easily any layer'or circular portion that has become saturated or useless. The pre ferred method of'securing' is made by surfacing the outside of" the rollers at the ends, either over the whole surface or in lines or designs as shown by '3 in Figures 1' and 2;
with a layer of adhesive. vSuch surfacing maybe painted in color, or color can be'mixed with adhesive. r
The blotting rollers are made with a center pass over the arms.
rying pin. This core be made of hard material or manufactured substances.
Such cores may be made separately and rollsowoundon them, or made with theblotting material Wound the same time as the cores.
Having described the blotting rollers and the method'of'making same, I now describe the preferred manner of using such blotting rollers. r Figure 3 shows the pen cap hfthe pen-.- holder j, and the nib is, of a fountain pen with the roll blotter. (the term used for a blotting roller attached to a frame) fixed correctly for writing purposes. The attachment shown is a circular'frame a, fixed to the pen which the roller V revolves and a swivel arm 6Z1? This arm (17? is swivelled on a rivet or pivot slotted at top to take the 'end of pinf. The lower end has .a nib projection 11 on the inside which slides into a r ess in a. I i A slight groove is made on the side of a following the movement of 7 lower end of swivel arm which allows it to be raised or lowered, to place a blotting roller on the pin. 3 I To prevent the "pen cap h from being I pushed through a and so impede the rollers movement, a top plate b, is cut out as shown in Figure 6, the outside edge being cut square it to pass. o v
is grooved on: two: sides to Figure-4 is a side elevation of Figure 3 showing in broken lines how the swivelarm is lowered and raised to place a roller on the pin. j
, Having thuslfully "described my invention The cap 0 Letters: Patent is V I .v
1. Apen attached blotter comprising-two arms mounted at the end of a pen and tween, strips of blottingpaperwound on the of the paper tohold. the roller together "and allow soiled pieces of paper to be tQin off.
.to form shoulders for the cap 0 to fix tightly over. To open the swivel, one edge of thetop plate 56 is cut atZ2 sufliciently to allow, I v
' what I claim as new and desire to secure by blotter jroller pivotally mounted therebe- I roller,"'adhesive strips applied to the edges 2. The structure as set forth in claim 1 in which one of the blotting'holding arms is swivelly mounted onthe pen and has a slot at the other end for mounting one end of the roller, so that the latter may be readily removed, all as described, and shown on the accompanyingdrawings.
