Description

'20*invention Es illustrated.
Patented Aug. 7, 1934 den:
" a sEraight edge 01 0Eher guiding edge; Eo provide an improved arrangemen; which can be easily and economz'cally manufacEured anal in general, iE is Ehe object 0f Ehe invenEiou Eo provide an v improved pencil construction of Ehe Eype re- 1 ferred Eo.
Other objecEs and .advantages cf Ehe invention Will be understood by reference E0 Ehe following specification and which a pencil embodying a selected form of Ehe In Ehe drawing, Figs. 1 and 2 are edge and. side views respec-Eively of Ehe pencil;
Fig. 3 is a, c1ess section 0n Ehe 1ine 3-3 0f Fig. 4 is a cross section simi1a1 Eo Fig. 3 but showing a modified arrangement; and
Fgs. 5, 6 and 7 illustrate various situations in Which Ehe improved. pencil construction may be advantageously used. Referring now Eo Ehe drawing Ehe pencil comsEruction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 comprise an elongated body 10 which may conveniently be 0f wood 01 0Eher suitable material, Ehe body being cf relatively wide 01 Ehin rectangular cross sec- Eion, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In one of Ehe wide faces of Ehe body 10 Ehere is recessed a, sErip 11 of lead o1 0Eher suitable wriEing material. As shown in Fig 3, Ehe lead astrip 11 may be of substantially square cross sec- Eion, but it may Fee of rectangular or 0Eher crosssectional shape. 'Ihe lead is preferably recessed inEo one of Ehe wide faces so EhaE when Ehe penci1 is used, iE may be placed with iEs wide leadcontaining face against Ehe straight edg6, in which case Ehe engagement of Ehe wide peneil face Will prevent Eurning of Ehe pencil and Ehereby facilitate Ehe accurace following of a straight edge or 0Eher guide member.
So .as Eo readily disEinguish Ehe lead-containing side of Ehe pencil from Ehe opposite side, Ehe corners of Ehe opposite side are preferably beveled 01 0Eherwise Ereated, as indicated a1; 12, 12; The
1 ;y1ead may be cemented in Ehe groove 18 formed accompanying drawing, in
IE is preferable, however, Ehat in amy form of cross section, Ehe arrangement be such Ehat relatively large body por-Eions be disposed on opposiEe sides o1 Ehe embedded lead sErip so as Eo afford adequate supporE for Ehe lead against latera1 Ehrusts. The rounded 1ead-containing face arrangement shovvn in Fig. 4'may be advan- Eageous, especia]ly where draftsmen use a; long 7% sErip of commercial lumber for a sEraight edge, because Ehe finish on such lumber is sometirnes comparatively rough ancl Ehe rounded face of Ehe pencil will more readily slide over such a rough edge. The rounded lead-containing face 8i1 may also be desirable where Ehe pencil is Eo be usec1 in foflowing coneavely curved guiding edges.
As shown in Fig. 5, Ehe described pencil C011- struction may be advantageously used where iE is desired Eo d1'aw a guide line across various 83" forms of mil1 werk in which Ehe face of Ehe work is noE a, smooth plane but contains recesses or valleys. As shown in Fig. 6, Ehe described. pencil .construction is advantageously used for drawing a guide line across warped lumber. In Fig. 7, Ehe 96 pencil is advantageously used for drawing a guide 1ine around one cylindrical object on Ehe surface 0f another. IE Will be seen EhaE because Ehe lead is disposed aE one sid.e 0f Ehe pencil, a vertical posiEion of Ehe pencil against Ehe guiding member 9'53 will resulE in an' accurately dravm guide line, even Ehough Ehe surface an which Ehe line is drawn Ehe pencil moves up anc1 down relative Eo Ehe 53 guide element iE being only important EhaE Ehe vertical position qf Ehe pencil be maintained.
Changes in Ehe described structure may be made without deparEing from Ehe spiriE of Ehe invention, Ehe scope of which should be determined by reference to the following daims, the same being construed as broadly as possible cousistent with the state of the art.
I daim:
l. A penci1 of the dass described, comprising a body and a strip of writing materia1 recessed into the body so that one face of the writing material strip is substantially flush With the corresponding face of the body, the writing material strip being of small cross sectional dimensions compared with those of the pencil and disposed wholly at one side of the pencil.
2. A pencil of the dass described, comprising a body and a strip of W1iting material recessed into the body so that one face 0f the Writing materia1 strip is substantially flush with the corresponding face of the body, the body being re1a tive1y wide laut thin in cross section and the writing material strip being recessed substantially cent1ally into one of the wide faces of the body whereby the body portions 0n opposite sides of ehe st1ip afiord adequate Support for the strip When subjected to lateral thrust.
3. A pencil of the dass described, comprising s a body am]. a strip of writing material reoessed into the body so thao one face of the writing material strip is substantially flush with the corresponding face of the body, ehe body beim; 01" relatively wide but thin, generally rectangular cross-section and having one of its wide Walls sub stantially flat, the writing material strip being recessed centrally into said fiat face of the body whereby said flat face is adapted to engage a straight edge or the 1ike to prevent turning of the penci1.
4. A pencil of the dass described, comprising a wood body having a, substantially fiat face and a strip 0f lead having a substantially fiat side, the lead strip beim; recessed into one side of the body so that sa.id fiat side is substantially fiush With the flat face of the body, the lead strip being 01 small cross-sectional dimensions compared With those of the body and disposed whol1y at one side 05 the latter.
5. A pencil of the dass described, comprising a wood body of relatively wide but thin, generally reccangular cross-section, and a lead strip also of rectangular c1oss section, said lead strip being recessed into one of the wide faces of the body so as to position ehe unter face of the 1ead strip substantially flush with the face of the body.
6. A penci1 of the dass described, comprising a body having one face on1y slightly convexly curved, and a lead strip recessed into said curved face of the pencil and having a face portion substantially fiush with said curved face of the body.
