This invention relates to grave vaults and has for its object to provide an improved construction of such devices whereby water and air are more thoroughly excluded and 5 whereby they are strengthened against collapse due to the pressure of the soil in which they may be buried. Other objects and advantages will appear from the detailed description herein.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described.

In the views, where like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, 5 designates the body portion, it being mainly and preferably formed of a single piece of corrugated sheet copper bent and folded as seen at 5 at the ends to form a rectangular parallelopiped box-like receptacle. The rim of the body portion has secured to it, preferably with solder, smooth strips of copper bent to right tri-angular form in cross section so as 3:) to form a broad sealing seat 6, a portion 7 that laps against the inner side of the wall of the body portion and a bracing portlon 8 that abuts against the outer side of said wall. These copper strips can be four in number, one for each of the sides and ends, they be ing mitered and soldered together at the corners of the rim so as to form a continuous seat and brace all around the rim of said body portion.
The cover is formed principally of a slngle piece of corrugated sheet copper cut and bent and soldered to form at the four corners a circumambient groove 9 located to lie against the portion 7 of the rim strip and a dependes ent external flange 10. Secured in the groove 1927. Serial No. 195,255.
9 are longitudinally bent strips 11 having upwardly projecting lips 11 against which is supported and soldered a supplementing roof-like portion 12, also of corrugated sheet copper. Sustaining said portion 12 is an interlor rectangular bracing member 13 that touches the inclined sides of the portion 12 and is soldered thereto by the ordinary method of soldering along the points of contact before application to the cover.
On the sealing seat 6 is placed a suitable sealing material 14 that fills the space between it and the opposed seat of the cover between the depending groove-forming portion 9 and the paralleling dependent external flange 10. There is thus formed a closed joint all around the top of the vault preventing the access of air, water, insects or other objectionable things to the interior of the vault. 65
From the construction thus described it will be observed that the body of the vault is braced against collapse by the groove forming portion 9 of the cover; that the cover also is braced against buckling by said portion and also by the surmounting roof-like portion and its sub brace 13.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a burial vault, a body portion having its rim provided with a sealing seat, acover for said body portion having parallel internal and external dependent portions extending downward at opposite sides of said seat, said internal portion being a groove, strips secured in said groove, and a roof-lilre bracing structure supported by said strlps.
2. In a burial vault, a body portion having its rim provided with a sealing seat, a cover for said body portion havlng parallel internal and external dependent portions extending downward at opposite sides of said seat, a roof-like bracing structure supported 90 at said groove, and internal bracing means between said roof-like structure and the body of the cover.
3. In a burial vault, a body portion having its rim provided with a sealing seat consisting of a strip of sheet metal bent to right triangular form in cross section having the intermediate of its sides forming an outward- 1y extending sealing seat, another of its sides lapping against and secured to the inner margin of the wall of the body portion and its other wall abutting against the outer side of the body portion, a cover for said body portion having parallel internal and external dependent portions extending downward at opposite sides of said seat, said internal dependent portion formed as a groove and a roof-like bracing structure supported at said groove. 20 WILLIAM S.
