BOX.
Application filed February 13, 1928. Serial No. 254,028.
The present invention relates to improvements in boxes and its particular object is to provide a box preferably of cardboard, or similar material, inwhich the sides are 3 held together without the use of nails, and in which at the same time the holding means reinforces the upper edge of the box so as to make the same particularly strong. A box of similar construction has been disclosed in my patent application, Serial'No. 128,675, but the present box offers certain advantages over the structure shown in the former application, as will appear from the following description.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 1 Figure 1' shows a perspective view of the complete box in its finished form;
Figure 2 a fragmentary vertical section through aportion of the box; and
Figure 3 a blank from which the box may be made without the use of nails.
While I have shown only the preferred :5 form of the invention, it should be understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claim hereto attached without departing from the spirit of the invention.
50 In its preferred form my box 1 is made of a blank 2, being substantially cross-shaped in form and comprising a rectangular or Cit polygonal body section 3, from the edges of which extend the sides 4, which may be bent upwardly to form a complete enclosure, as indicated in the perspective viewof Figure 1. A band 6 in width nearly one-half of the ultimate depth of the box, is adapted to encircle the sides 4. The latter have extensions 7 projecting from the upper edges and these projections which are preferably tapered as shown at 8, are adapted to be turnedovcr the upper. edge of the band 6 and at the lower edge of said band, and to be guided through slits 9 arranged in the sides substantially on a level with the lower edges of the band. The extremities of the extensions 7 thus penetratethrough the walls or sides of the box and lie along the inside thereof, holding the band against movement so that'in the combination the band firmly holds the four or more sides of thebox together, while the extensions 7 hold the band against endwise movement.
It will be seen that in this manner a strong box may be made of comparatively light material, such as cardboard paper and in a quick and economical manner.
I claim:
A box of the character described comprising a polygonal bottom having sides extending from the edges thereof adapted to be bent upwardly from the bottom and to a form an all around enclosure and formed with slits intermediate of their height, and 5 an endless reinforcing strip surrounding the enclosure, the sides having extensions adapted to be folded over the upper edgeof. the strip and to pass aroundthe lower edges and through the slits in the sides to the inside of the box. V ALFRED H. BEYER.
