Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.177,211, dated May 9, 1676 application filed March 20, 1876. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. OURRAN, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Coffee, Spices, & c., of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to improvements in that class of boxes or receptacles employed for holding cofi'ee, teas, spices, sugar, and other similar articles, in which the articles are stored in a suitable receptacle, and delivered from the same into a sliding scoop in regulated quantities through an opening provided with a slide, which is opened'and closed by the insertion and withdrawal of the scoop.
The object of the present. invention is to render such class of devices more reliable in operation, to simplify their construction, thereby reducing their cost, and to enable the operating parts to be conveniently removed for repairs.
My invention consists of a novel construction and combination of parts, which will be fully hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, a preliminary de-.
scription being, therefore, deemed unnecessary.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view, showing the slide closed and the scoop inserted; Fig. 2, a similar view with the scoop partially inserted, and Fig. 3 a detached view of the slide.
Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention, the letter A represents a box or receptacle, which may be of any desired form, but which, in the present example, consists of a hopper having inclined sides. Be-
neath the hopper or. receptacle A is suitably arranged a rectangular or other shaped casin g, B, which is closed, except at its front end, and is provided with an opening, a, which opens into the hopper or receptacle. Near the rear end of the casing B is secured a depending hanger, b, into which is set one end of a horizontal rod or guideway, O, the opposite end of the guideway or rod being provided with, and fitting over, a stud, 0, near the front of the casing, which stud is screwthreaded, for a purpose to be mentioned hereafter. Upon this guide-rod is arranged the slideLD, which is provided on its under side with two parallel ears or wings, which set on opposite sides of the guide-rod, so as to prevent the possibility of its displacement. The
slide D is provided with a depending springbar, E, provided at one end with a downwardly-projecting bifurcated arm, d, which straddles and slides upon a guide-wire, e, which is connected at one end to the horizontal guide-rod O, and then bent downwardly, and then horizontally, as at e, and thence inclined upwardly, as atf,.andits end provided with an eye, which also sets over the screwstud c at the front end of the casing B. The lower ends of the bifurcated arms are connected by a wire, g, which forms'an abutment, for the object hereinafter stated.
Gr represents a scoop,'constructed 'in the form of a drawer, and it is of such size as to snugly fit in the casing B, in which it is inserted from the front open end, and near the center of the scoop are arranged two arms for operating the slide, whicharms, in the present instance, consist of a vertical wire, q, inclined downwardly toward the open rear end of the scoop, which arm serves to catch the bifurcated arm of the springbar E, and draw the slide 1.) forward to close the opening in the top of the casing B when the scoop is withdrawn from the latter, while the vertical arm h, which is inclined downwardly and for-- wardly, serves to push said bifurcated arm backward when the scoop is inserted, in order to open communication between the receptacle A and easing B.
It will be seen that the front ends of the horizontal guide-rod G and the guide-wire c are arranged on the screw-stud c, and both are confined thereon by a nut, i, screwed on the stud. The object of such is, that by removing the nut the guide-wire and guide-rod can be removed from the stud, and all the operating parts of the device removed in case any disarrangement shouldoccur or repairs become necessary.
The slide D, in the present instance, is curved in cross-section, or concave, which permits it to operate freely when the device is used for any unground or coarse substances; but for fine or ground substances the slide may be perfectly flat.
