This invention relates to match-delivering receptacles; and its object is to provide -a simple and inexpensive device of this character adapted to contain matches and pro vided with mechanism whereby only a single match may be Withdrawn at a time.

The invention comprises a hopper to contain a supply of matches, a slide having a delivery-slot through which only one match may pass at a time, a hollow delivery-chute which also serves as a handle for operating the slide, and mechanism for retracting said chute.

The construction of the improvement will be more specifically described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims. I

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a match-delivering device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in perspec tive of the combination delivery-chute and handle employed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the slide employed, and Fig. 5 is an edge View of said slide.

The reference-numeral 1 designates a supporting-base, which is preferably made of metal to provide a substantial support for a casing 2, the front and sides of which are cut away to provide a space 3, into which extends the lower portion of a hollow handle 4,

serving also asa chute through which the matches are delivered.

.The casing 2 is divided by a horizontal partition 5 into an upper compartment 6, serving as a hopper, and a compartment 7, con taining the slide-operating mechanism. The partition 5 is provided with a transverse opening 8, through which the matches are led, and below said partition is supported a slide 9 by a supporting-plate 10, arranged parallel to the partition. 'This slide is formed with a transverse slot 11, adapted to register with the discharge or feed opening 8 of the partition, said slot 11 being of such width as to adapt it to receive only one match at a time. The hopper has a suitable hinged cover 6 Projecting from the rear wall of the housing is a bracket-arm 12, to which is fulcrumed a lever 13, the upper end'of which is connected to one end of a link 14, the opposite end of which is pivotally secured be tween perforated lugs 15, depending from the slide and extending through a slot 16, formed in the supporting-plate 10. The lower end of the lever 13 is pivotally connected to the'rear end of a link 17, the forward end of which is pivotally secured to a bracket 18, projecting from the inner side of the handle 4. A coil-spring 19 also connects the brackets 12 and 18 to retract the handle.

l/Vithin the-upper compartment 6 of the casing are two oppositely- inclined plates 20 and 21, the plate 20 being inclined downward from the front wall of the casing to the dischargeo,* ening 8, while the plate 21 is inclined downward and forward from the rear wall of the casing and then downward and rearward to the rear side of the slot 8. plates thus provide a hopper-bottom, alllOiI construction and relative arrangement being such that a row of matches will be presented above the slide in proper parallel position to permit one of them to drop through the slot 11 of the slide when the latter is moved into proper position to receive it.

The construction of the combination chute and handle is best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Its body portion comprises a triangular casing 22, provided at its front side with pro jecting perforated lugs 23, pivotally supported upon a rod 24, extending across the casing 2 below the slide and having its ends fitted into bearings in the side walls of the casing 2. The lower end of the delivering-chute and handle 1 is contracted to provide a dischargespout 25, which is adapted to be grasped by the hand to manipulate the device. The casing 22 is extended at one side of its upper end, as at 26, and provided with a deflector 27, against which one end of the match will strike after it drops through the slot 1 1 of the slide, causing the match to assume a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, so that it will drop by gravity through the discharge end of These the chute and its hollow handle and onto the base 1.

The operation ofithe mechanism constructed as thus described will be readily understood. The matches are placed within. the hopper 6 in parallel position transversely of the hopper, and they feed by gravity to the discharge-opening 8 of the hopper. When the handle 4 is pulled forward, the slide 9 is pulled rearward through the medium of the lever 13 and links 14 and 17, to bring the slot 11 of said slide below the hopper-opening 8, where it receives one match. The coil-spring 19 retracts the pivoted chute, and the slide is forced forward to bring its slot 11 in register with the open end of the casing 22, when the match drops into the casing and strikes the deflector 27, which turns it, as already explained, and permits it to drop through the pivoted chute and handle.

It will be obvious that a match will drop at each inward movement of the lever and that only one match will be delivered at a time.

In addition to the novelty and convenience of the device as a match-receptacle for stores and public places it will prevent the annoyance and expense to cigar dealers and others caused by the habit of some customers of helping themselves liberally from the ordinary match-boxes kept for the use of buyers.

VVhile the construction here shown and described serves the purpose in view, I would have it understood that the invention is not restricted to all of the details here shown, but includes all such modifications and changes as may fall within the terms of the following claims.

That I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is I 1. A match delivering receptacle comprising a hopper having a discharge-opening, a slide supported below the hopper and having a slot adapted to receive one match at a time, a pivoted discharge-chute below the slide, serving also as an operating-handle, and connections between said pivoted chute and slide for moving the latter.

2. A match delivering receptacle com prising a hopper having a discharge-opening, a slide supported below the hopper and having a slot adapted to receive only one match at a time from the hopper, a pivoted discharge-chute below the slide serving also as an operating-handle, a deflector within said pivoted chute to turn the match so that it at a time from the hopper, a pivoted discharge-chute below the slide, serving also as an operating-handle, a deflector within said pivoted chute to turn the match so that it will drop lengthwise, and connections between the pivoted chute and slide for operating the latter, comprising a lever, alink connecting the slide and lever, and a link, connecting the pivoted chute and lever.

4. In a match-delivering receptacle, the combination with a casing cut away at its front and sides, of a slotted partitiondividing the easing into an upper and alower compartment, a hopper-bottom above said partition, a slotted slide below the partition, a pivoted chute to receive matches through the slot in the slide, and serving also as an operating-handle for the slide, a lever fulcrumed within the lower compartment ofthe casing, link connections between said lever and the slide and pivoted chute, and a retractingspring for said chute.

5. In a match-delivering receptacle, the combination with a hopper and. a slotted slide, of a pivoted delivery-chute connected to the slide, means for retracting the chute, and a deflector within the chute for tilting a match lengthwise after it passes into the chute through the slide.

6. In a match-delivering receptacle, the combination with a hopper, and a slotted slide, of a pivotally-secured chute, connections between said chute and slide, and'a deflector within said chute at one side thereof, said pivoted chute having a contracted lower end to deliver the match lengthwise, and said connected lower end serving as a handle.
