Description
July Z9, 1930. H, BERNEY ET AL BOX FASTENER Filed Aug. 5, 1929 FW.Z.
Patented July 29, 1930 UNITED STATES BOX FASTENER Application meaaugust 5, 1929. serial No. 383,503;
This invention relates to a fastener designed primarily for use with `cardboard and like boxes for different purposes, one of the objects being to provide a novel form of tastening cord which, when assembled with a box and its cover, Will serve to hold them against accidental separation and, at the same time, constitute a means whereby the box can be carried conveniently.
Another Objectis to provide a cord 'for the purposes mentioned which can also be used to hold the contents of the box under pressure and keep them from shifting and becoming mussed While the box isb'eing carried.
With the foregoing and'other objects in view which will appear' as the description pro` ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ofthe invention here` in disclosed maybe made Within the scope of what is claimed without vdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre-v `end portion of the cover showing one of the cordfreceiving slots.
One form of box with which the invention can be used has been illustrated in the drawing and is of the telescope type including a body 1 and a cover 2 adapted to slip onto and around the body. The parts can be made of heavy cardboard, imitation leather or other material. Y
Formed in the sides of the body 1 are slots 8 each of which opens into a notch 4 at the free edge of said side and terminates, at its inner end, in an extension 5 disposed at right angles to the main portion of the slot and along the longitudinal center of the side of the body. This extension opens int-o an aper- Vthe cover.
ture, or eyey 6. The `two extensions `5 in each PATENT OFFICE] f l side are extended toward each-other and the aperturesor eyes 6 in each side 'aredirectly opposite the corresponding onesin the oppossiteside. fThegsi'des ofV the cover 2 are also provided with slots 7 extendingthereinto from the free edges thereof, therebeing notches Seat the outer ends `ofthe slots While theinner ends of the slots 7 open laterally into eyes or open-l ings 9 intersectingthe, longitudinal Jcenters of thesides. Slots 7 in each side of theic'over 2 are closer-together than are the slots Sibut the openings oreyes 9 are located where they will register wththe openings'whencover is properly positioned on thebodyrot the ox. Y .f.
Notches 1() may be formed in the free edges of the sides of cover 2fbetweenl thefnotches s 8 to receive fingers of; the user whenitsis desired to slidethe cover upwardly off of the bodyof the box. f
.IA cord has been indicatedatlllband` the ends thereof are fastened together; in any-` i suitable manner. This cord is so proper-0 tioned as to be capable of extending acrossj the boxV from side to side thereofwhere thel` openings 6 and 9 are, located-and to provide`- anhandle portion 12 along .the outer side of In `practice the bodyportion `l is packed with the garments or other fabrics to becarried after which the cord 1l is extended.. across therbody and inserted into the notches 4 which, in turn, guide the cord into the slots 3, their extensions 5 and the openings or eyes 6. The cover 2 is then pressed downwardly around the body 1, notches 8 receiving the cord and Vguiding it into slots 7 and thence to openings 9. Y The openings 6 and 9 will register and by lifting the closed box by means of the handle portion 12 the cord will lbe drawn taut, fasten the cover to the body, and press the contents firmly against the bottom of the body. V
Wvhatis claimed is:
`1. The combination with a box including a body and a cover adapted to telescope, there being registeringopenings in the opposed sides kof the body and cover, eachopening having a slot extending therefrom to the free edge of the part in Which the opening is formed, of an endless loop insertable through the slots into the respective openings and providing portions extending transversely Within the box and a handle outside of the box.
2. The combination with a box including a body, a cover adapted to telescope there` in, there being spaced apertures in opposed sides of the body and cover, the corresponding apertures in the body and cover being adapted to register when the box is fully closed, of endless loop shi-ftable into the sides of the body and cover from the free edges thereof and adapted to be seated'in the apertures to fasten the cover tothebody.
3.v Thecoinbination with a box including a body `and-,cover adapted to telescope, there being spaced apertures in opposed sides of the: cover and body, all ofthe corresponding. apertures being adapted to register when they box is fully closed, there being a slot extending from each aperture to the free edge of thatl side of the body or cover in which it is 1ocated,;of an endless flexible loop insertable laterally into the slots and the alining apertures, said loop havnga portion.
outside of the box constituting a handle, said loop beingprovided Withspaced portions extending across-the interior of the box to bind the contents of the box against the body when the'loop .is taut. Y
--4. A iboxz includinga body and a cover Y adaptedtoftelescope, there being spaced apy ertures in each; oftwo opposed sides ofthe body and cover.and slotsextending'froni the Lee edges-of said sides to the respective apertures,v the corresponding apertures in the bodyand cover being adapted to register for the .receptionbf a fastening element insertable longitudinally of the slots intothe apertures to hold the cover to the body, to engage the contents of the. box, and to provide a handle.
n In testimony that'lwe claim the foregoing as our owinrwe have hereto aixed oursignatures-- HAROLD .BE-RNEY. FRED BERNEY.
