E. J. BARNARD 1,940,900
BRIEF CASE Filed Aril l, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 /0 I Invnlor F/XWMN? 29771371 Patented Dec. 26, 1933 BRIEF CASE Ellsworth J. Barnard, Cohoes, N. Y. Application April 1, 1932. Serial No. 602,568'
2 Claims.
, features of the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the severalfparts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or-corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in Which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view looking toward the front of the device.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the sections. v
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the main section or that section which carries the closure flap and the straps.
' Fig. 4 is an end view showing composed of three sections.
In these drawings, the letter A. indicates the main section and the letter B the other sections. Each section is composed of the front member 1, the rear member Zand the bellows end and botth brief case tom members 3, the upper edge of thef'ront mem-. her being recessed as at 4 to facilitate the plac-- ing of papers and other articles in thesection and their removal therefrom. Each section is also provided with the elongated slots 5 in its bottom part, these slots passing under the. fold of the bottom member 3 so that the straps passing through these slots will not interfere with the contraction and expansion movement of the bot-tom member 3.
Eyelets may be placed in the slots 5, if desired.
Of course, these slots pass through both the front ,made in the construction and in and rear members 1 and 2. Thesections are detachably connected together by the snap fasteners, both portions of each of which is shown at'6;
has attached thereto a number of, short straps 8,'
each of which is connected at its ends to the flap to form holders for the straps.
Similar short straps 9 are connected to the rear used alone.
one of the other sections.
claim as new is:--
face of the main section A and similar straps 10 are connected to'the front face of the front section as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
A central strap 11 passes through the central slot of the main section A, one of the short straps 9 and through the central strap 8 and has a buckle 12 at its upper end receiving the perforated other end and if desired, this buckle 12 can be made in the form of a lock or one part of the lock can be attached to the flap 7 and another part to the front face of the front section if desired and of course, a keeper member for the lock of the flap could be attached to the front face of the'main section A so that the flap can be locked when the single main section is to be A handle forming strap of substantially U-shape and shown at 13 passes under the end straps 8 and has a buckle 14 at each end thereof for receiving the perforated end of the straps 15,
' the'upper ends of which are connected together by a handle forming part 16. The straps 15 pass under the short straps 9 and through the end slots'5 and under the end straps 10, and are then connected with the buckles 14. .Thus these straps connect'the two handle parts together and also act with the central strap 11 to hold the device closed and the three straps 11 and 15 also act to hold the sections together;
A partition 17 made in the form of a bellows may be placed in the main section A to form a pocket for receiving pencils and other articles, though if desired, thispartition may be placed in From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a brief case, made up of a main section carrying a closure flap and a plurality of other sections which can be used or notas desired so that the brief case can be provided with any desirable number of receptacles.
It is thought, from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is .to be understood that changes may be the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I 1. A brief case composed of a numberof sections, each forming a receptacle, the rear section having a flap connected with its rear portion, means for detachably connecting the sections together, each section having slots in its lower part 2. A brief case composed of a number of separable sections each forming a receptacle, said case including a rear section having a flap connected with the upper edge of the rear portion and covering the upper portions of all the sections when the sections are connected together, means for detachably connecting each section to another section, strapspassing around the sections and portions of saidstraps forming handles, and the bottom portions of the sections having openings therein through which portions of the straps pass. ELLSWORTH J. BARNARD.
