The present invention relates to hoists that are adapted to' a variety of practical 'require-' ments such as for suspension in a stationary position, for being moved in a horizontal plane, or for being mounted upon travelling crabs and the invention has among its obiects to cause a second rope provided with a oad hook or block to be lowered'as the other- The features 0 the invention are hereinafter set forth by reference-to the accompanying drawings in which Figures 1 and .2 relate to one construction fao embodying the invention in which Figure 1 is a lon itudinal section through a hoisting gear, an s Fi re Figure 1, the left hand side of the figure beas ing apart front elevation of the casing 5, and the right hand'side of the figure being a part cross-section through the said casing, Figure 3- relates tovanotherconstruction embodyin the invention and is a front'eleofa hoist similar in construction to, that il ustrated inFigures 1 and 2,;the casing being. provided with ateral pu'lleys, and I Figure 4 relates to another construction embod ing the invention and is a side elevation 0 a'hoist similar in construction to that illustrated inFigures 1 and 2, in which the ro s are provided with blocks. j l .he stationary part 2 of the motor 18 provided in thecasin'g 1, andthe rotorshafzh3 on e of the electro-motor'is mounted at 4 left in the partition wall 4 of the gear casing 5. The shaft has mounted upon it at its forward end, a pinion 6, which enga s in a corresponding set of internal teeth 9 wheel 7. The latter is connected with the inion 8 upon the shaft 9, and the toothed w eel 7 and pinion 8 are preferably made ntelgral'.
The/p1nion8 engages the'two toothed w eels 10, which are connected with the driving pulother hand, by the construction according to 2 is an end view corresponding to i to the casing the toothed vformed by leys 11. Here again one of each of the toothed wheels 10 and a driving pulley 11 are formed integral. The ro e 12 iswound a number of times around t e driving pulleys 11, the two ends of the rope'being rov'ided with load hooks 13 loaded by welg ts 12. The casing 5 is disposed in a position close to the pulleys 11 in such manner that it is impossible for the rope to leave them, and thus it is unnecessary to provide a special rope guide.
As the rope ing at one and the same position, the guiding slots 15 may be madevery narrow. On the the present invention the slots may extend laterall over almost the whole periphery of the pul eys, so that the ropes may pass out of the casing at any desired angle and even horizontally.
A brake cone 16 is-provided upon the rotor shait of the motor 2, the opposing cone 17 being formed by the cover plate 18 of the casmg. a The motor is provided with the axially movable armature 2, so that when the currentlis cut ofi the rotor. moves to the ri ht under the'action of the spring 19 and is t us braked.
The spring 19 presses against: a ring-19 which in turn presses against the .rollers 4" of the bearing i'. The radial bearin is thus at the same time-used for absorbing-t e comparatively small axial pressures. I
- In order to provide a suflieient distance between the re for cumbersome loads, they maybe 'giii ed, as,illustratedin Figure 3 f over d lateral pulleys '14 which are mounts in the brackets 19 of the casing.
According to the construction illustrated in Figure 4 each of the rope ends that extend from opposite-sides of the hoist is fastened v by suitable securing means as indicated at 20.
Blocks21 may-be suspended in loops thus the respective ropes. The lower block disposed in its lowermost position is not shown in Figure '4 in order to make the drawin simpler. The raised y the hooks, at

The motor is started up and stop in any suitable known manner from the oor level; it drives the two ulleys 11 simultaneously and uniformly. As it is provided at both ends with load hooks, eyes, claws or the like, a load can be raised at each operation of the rope by the upwardly moving end of the rope, during which time the other end of the rope is lowered with or without a load.
I claim:
1. An electric hoist consisting in combination of a casing, an electro-motor and two juxta-posed driving and load sustaining pulleys within the said casing, the said pulleys being mounted upon axes substantially parallel and in the same plane as the electro-motor shaft, a flexible load suspension member wrapped around the said pulleys, the respective ends of which member bear load-engaging means and depend at the opposite outer sides of the said pulleys and when unloaded are respectively of such weight as to subject' 'the said flexible member to tension, a countershaft supported within said casing between the said pulleys, and gearing upon said countershaft transmitting the drive of the electro-motor to the two pulleys, substantially as hereinbefore described.
2. An electric hoist according to claim 1, comprising a casing in two detachable sections, one section enclosing the electro-motor and the other section the two pulleys and the countershaft with the gearing thereon, substantially as hereinbefore described.
3. An electric hoist consisting in combination of a casing, an electro-motor and two .juxta-posed driving and load sustaining pulleys within the said casing, the said pulleys being mounted upon axes substantially parallel and in the same plane as the electro-motor shaft, a flexible load-suspension member wrapped around the said pulleys, the respective ends of which member bear load-engaging means and depend at the opposite outer sides of the said pulleys and when unloaded are respectively of such weight as to subject the said member to tension, a countershaft supported within said casin between said pulleys, and gearing upon said countershaft adapted to cause simultaneous rotation of the said pulleys on operation of the said electromotor, the said gearing comprising a gear wheel with internal teeth, a pinion'on the shaft of the electro-motor engaging the said gear wheel, and gear wheels provided respectively on the said driving pulleys and each engaging the pinion on the countershaft, substantially as hereinbefore described.
4. An electric hoist consisting in combination of a casing, an electro-motor having an axially movable rotor and shaft, a brake member rigidly mounted on said shaft, a co-o crating brake member in fixed relation to t a said casing, a spring adapted to move the said shaft axially to engage the brake members, two juxta-posed driving and load-suspension pulleys within saidcasing, said pulleys being mounted upon axes substantially parallel and in the same plane as the electro-motor shaft, a flexible load-suspension member wrapped around the said pulleys, the respective ends of which member bear load-engaging means and depend at the opposite outer side of the saidpulleys and whenunloaded are respectivel of such weight as-to subject the said mem er to tension, a counter-shaft supported within said casing between the said pulleys, and gearing upon said countershaft transmitting the drive of the electro-motor to the two pulleys, substantially as hereinbefore described.
5. An electric hoist consisting in combination of a casing formed in two detachable sections, an electro-motor mounted in one section ofthe said casing, two juxta-posed driving and load-sustaining pulleys disposed within the second section of the said casing, the said pulleys being mounted upon axes-substantially parallel and in the same plane as the electro-motor shaft, 9. flexible load-suspension member wrapped around the said pulleys, the respective ends of which member bear load-engaging means and depend on .the opposite outer sides of the said pulleys, and w an unloaded are res ectively of such weight as to subject the sai member to tension, a countershaft disposed between the said pulleys within the second section of the casing, and gearing upon the countershaft for transmitting the driving from the electro-motor to the said pulleys, substantially as hereinbefore described.
6. An electric hoist according to claim 5, comprising an electro-motor with axially movable rotor and shaft, a brake member rigid upon the said shaft, a cover plate to the section of the casin containing the'electromotor, a brake sur ace upon t e said cover plate, and a spring tending to move the shaft and rotor axially to engage the brake mem bers, substantially as hereinbefore described.
