Description
June 17, 1,930. o. GROSS 1,765,010
EASEL PHOTD HOLDER Filed March 11. 1929 Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED STATES OLIVER GROSS, F TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GROSS PHOTO SUPPLY COMPANY,
OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO EASEL mro'ro gnonnnn:
Application filed March 11, 1529; Serial No. 345,948.
This invention relates to a frame adapted to rest upon a substantially level surface and to support a photograph or similar article in a suitable position for display.
The object of the invention is to provide a folder of this kind, made from cardboard or similar flexible material, which may be easily set up and in which the supported parts are interlocked and held in such relation as to constitute a well-braced and durable construction.
The specific construction of the invention, in its preferred embodiment, and the advantages thereof, will be more particularly explained inconnection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the invention set up.
Figure 2 is a perspective view'of the folder partially folded.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the-folder as it appears in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 1 of Figure 3. 1
The folder, which constitutes the subjectmatter of my invention, comprises a front panel 5 on which a photograph or the like may be mounted. A bottom flap 6 is connected to the lower end of the panel 5 and an upper flap '7 is similarly connected to the upper end of the panel. The folder is made from cardboard or similar material, which is scored or creased along the lines 8 and '9, respectively, thus providing fold or i hinge lines, about which the flaps may fold.
The upper flap 7 is also formed with fold lines or creases 10 and 11 which converge from the upper corners of the flap to a point 12 near the center thereof, and a similar fold line or crease 13 extends along the 1011-7 gitudinalcenter line of the flap from the point 12' to the end thereof, thus forming lateral leaves 1 1 and which may be flexed about the lines 10, 13, and 11, 13, respectively. The double lines atlO, 11 and 13 represent narrow portions of thematerial which arecrinkled to facilitate flexure on these lines. Thus, whenthe folder is set up the upper part ofthe flap 7, together with the leaves Hand 15 form a trihedral angle having its vertex at the point 12 and the lower end of the'fiap is L-shaped in cross section, similar to an angle bar. The lower ends' ofthe leaves "14 and 15 are formed-withtabs 16 and 17, respectively, and the"lower' flap 6 is formedwithob- v hquelyydis'po'sed slits 18 and 19 toreceive the tabs and thus form an interlocking con-f nec'tion between the flaps." 1
When thefolder is set up in the manner described, the form ofthe flap 7 gives-'ita marked strength and rigidity," although the material of which 'i't-is'mad'e may be quite flexible. V This strength and rigidityis-due p primarily to the angular relation of tliedif ferent parts of the flap 7 and to-the fact that thetw'oflapsinterlock iIlISllCh' a manner that each pa'rt'is positively heldin'position. The folder maybe very easily set up and will last indefinitely without any material distortion, yet may be easily taken down'and laid flat, when desired While I have shownand specifically described onlyione embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein, without departing materially from the essential features of the invention, or'sacrificing any of it's advantagesl It is my intention, therefore, to include all such modifications within the scope of the appended claims. lVhat I claim'is': 1
A device of edge of the panelyand' tabs'formed'at the.
end of-one -of said flaps, the other flap having slits arranged in angular relation in a position to receive said tabs to effect an interlocking engagement.
2. A device of the character described A the; character described, comprislng a'panel adapted to be supported i upper edge of the panel by a foldline to 45 v V tending from its upper corners andconvergr ,ing to an internal meeting po nt, and-a fold constitute a prop, said' flap having three fold lines extending in different directions and meeting near the center of the flap to form leaves, said leaves having tabs at the ends, and a flap connected to the lower end of the panel and having slits to receive said tabs, said slits being angularly disposed with relation to each other, so that when the tabs engage the same, said leaves are in different 7 planes, thereby stiffeningeach other.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a panel ada ted to be supported in inclined position, a ap connected to the upper edge of the panel'by a fold line to constitute a prop, said flap having three fold lines extending in different directions and meetingnear the center of the flap to form leaves flexibly connected, a flap connected to the lower edge of the panel and adapted to meet the first mentioned flap, and means for interlocking the meeting portions, said meansincluding tabs upon one flap and slits in the other, so arranged that the first mentioned flap is held with its leaves form- I ing an angle with each other, whereby one leaf stifi'ens the other.
LA device of the character described,
comprising a panel adaptedto be supported in inclined position, a flap connected to'the upper edge ofthe panel by a fold line to constitute a prop, said flap having fold lines extending from its upper. corners and; converging to an internal meeting point and a fold line extending from the bottom edge to said meeting point to form lateral leaves which may be rocked about the lines meeting at said pointtoform a trihedral angle, and means for securing the bottom edges of said leaves in spaced relation to the'bottom edge of said panel. 7 1 5. A device of thecharacterdescribed, comprising a panel adapted to be supported in inclined position, a flap connected to the upper edge of the panel by a fold line to con; stitute a prop, said flap ha ving fold lines -exline extending from the bottom edge to said meeting point to form lateral leaves which may be rocked about the lines meet ing atsaid point to form a trihedral an le, tabs at the lower end of said flap, an a flap connected to thelower edge of the panel and having slits to receive said tabs, said slits being so arranged that the leaves-Will beheld in their angular relation asilong as the tabs are engaged with the slits.
.In testimony whereof 'I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
