Description

March 16 1926.
A, F. MILLER ADVERTISING: DISPLAY EASEL Filed April 28, 1924 drical can,
Patented Mar. l6, i926.
oar are AUGUST E. MILLER, 01E SAhl' FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO SCHMIDT LITHQ- 1 GE COMPANY, GOREORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
ADVERTISING: IDISIPLA'Y IEAJSEL.
Application filed April 28, 1924!- Serial No. 709,355.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Ausus'r F. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Fran: cisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Advertising Display Easel, of which ,the following is a specification, in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same. This invention relates to an advertising dis lay carton, and its object is to produce a isplay carton for advertising purposes which will give the appearance of a cylinalthough it. is only a half cylinder in extent, the flat side of the carton being placed against thewall or'other object and thereby producing a carton which will 0ccupy only half the space it would occupy if it were completely cylindrical.
Another object of the invention is to produce a very eflective advertising display car- ;ton which will be so shaped as to permit it to be folded flat, a result much easier attained with a carton having one flat side than with a carton a complete cylinder. I
Another ob'ect of the invention is to provide means w ereby the locking tab used at each end for securing the ends of the carton extended may be properly placed, the ends having a register hole punched therein for. that purpose.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.
. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the carton looking toward the flat side,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the carton as it appears extended, the ends being indicated in dotted positions as they appear in moving toward the folded position,
Fig. 3 is a'vertical sectional view of the display carton as it appears folded,
Fig. 4 is an end view of the cartonas it appears folded,
Fig. 5 is a view of the blank on a slightly smaller scale which formsv the outer pertions of the carton,
Fig. .6 is a plan view of one of the end blanks for holding the carton extended, and
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the locking tab for holding the ends extended.
The carton consists of a blank 1 having a gummed tab 2 along one edge, and having four lines of creasing 3 to 6 lnclusive. The arrangement of the creases is such that the carton back A which is a half diameter will allow the front B to fold flat against the same when folded on the lines 4 and 6 so that the back, plus the two flaps O and D equals the remainder of the front B.
The ends 7 and 8 are half circles, each with a hole 9 and 10 punched therein and each is provided with a fiap 11 which is glued to the back.
The lock consists of a small circle 12 with two open slots 13 and 14 in its edges and the ends each have an open notch, as indicated ,at 15. Ordinarily, in order to save paper, the locks 12 are unched out of the holes formed in the ends, ut one of the principal features of the present invention lies in the provision of the registry hole 9.
When the display cartons are glued, the flap 2 is glued along the edge of the back and as soon as the glue has hardened sufliciently to permit, the operator takes two of the end ieces, glues them along the flaps 11. and
inserts them flat between the front and back with one of the locks 12 inserted in the hole 9. The fiap 11 is, or course, aligned with the edges of the ends of the carton back when it is placed in position, and at the same time, a drop of glue is placed on the lock 12 so that it will, secure that lock to the inside of the front B. The cartons are then piled up fiat until the glue is thoroughly dry, and when they are opened, the lock will be in the proper place to be applied to the notch ,15 to hold the end extended.
What I claim is as follows, but modifica: tions may be made in carrying out theinvention shown .in the drawings and in the above particularly described form thereof, within the purview of the invention as defined by the annexed claim.
2 emon/2 I claim ing tabs having open slots secured inside the A carton of the class described, comprisfront member to cooperate with notches in ing front and back members secured tothe end members to hold them extended. gether, and foldable flat end members se In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5 owed to the back member along opposite my hand this 17th day of April, A. D. 1924.
edges thereof 'and adapted to he flat between the front and back members and lock- AUGUST 1 MILLER.
