Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings, and first to the form of Figures 1 to 3, the locomotive whistle is shown at A and is of the usual fluid-operated type. lts valve is operated by a lever 66 to which is pivoted a rod 10. Said rod and accordingly the valve is adapted to be operated either by hand through manipulation of a lever 11 having a handle 12, or by foot through operation of the valve 12', in the latter instance, controlling the entry of operating fluid through a pipe 13, having connection with the main air reservoir, of the air brake system. The valve 12 is normally closed, but when depressed by the foot opens and permits the compressed air to pass through the same.

to a nipple 1 1 of a cylinder 15, which as shown in Figures 1 and 2, may be conveniently located within a cab, for instance supported by a bracket 16 fastened to the cab and applicable over the nipple 1 1 of the cylinder 1 and being secured thereto through the medium oi: a nut 17 threaded to said nipple. The air inlet passageway through the nipple 1 1 is designated 18 and it leads to the chamber 19 01 the cylinder. In said chamher, is a suitable piston 20. A vent or pressure release port 21 is provided through the wall of cylinder on thelow-pressure side of the piston. 23 designates the piston rod secured to piston and slidably mounted through a head 24 detachably screw threaded at 25 into the cylinder 15. Said rod 23 is pivotally connected at 27 to a cross lever 28, pivoted as at 29 to a bracket 30 connected to the cab C of the locomotive within which the valve 12 is located. Lever 28 at one end as at 31 is pivotally connected to the rod 10 and at its other end may have a standard connection as at 32 to a snow plow.
- "Within the cab said lever 11 is disposed and it has rod 33 suitably journaled and provided with a crank 34 from which a pin 35 extends and is disposed in an elongated slot 36 in said rod 10. The pin 35 is normally at the forward extremity of slot 36, being so maintained by a weighted connection as at 37 on rod 33, but of course other means may be substituted for said weight if desired.
Due to the construction described, the valve of the whistle A may be operated from within the cab, by the operator with one foot depressing the valve 12, or through movement of one hand, moving the lever 11 downwardly at its free end. When the valve 12 is operated, the compressed air passes through pipe 13, port 18 into chamber 19 behind the piston 2O thus moving said piston 20 forward and correspondingly moving the rod 23 which rocks the lever 28 and moves the lever 10 rearwardly. Thus operation of either lever 11 or valve 12 will result in the blowing of the whistle.
At the same time, particular attention is called to the fact that operation of the rod 10 and whistle by either means .11 or 12, is permissible, Without one means offering material resistance to operation by the other.
The result last mentioned may be accomplished also with the device of Figure 4 although the latter is of the modified form. In such form of Figure 4, the Whistle B has a pneumatic cylinder 15 and associated parts formed at the base thereof. This cylinder 15 and associated piston and parts, in Figure 4 operate the valve of the whistle B, which valve has an arm or lever 17 similar to the lever a in Figure 1. The compressed air passes to the cylinder 15 through a pipe 15, similar to the pipe 13, undercontrol vof a foot-operated valve 12, located Within the cab. The lever b has a pin 31 disposed in an elongated slot 36, of a rod '10, manually operable through manipulation of a lever 11,
having a handgrip 12,the lever being pivoted at 13 within the cab and pivotally connected at 14: to saidrod 10. By providing the elongated slot 36 in rod '10 provision is made for operation of the Whistle by valve 12 and its connected parts Without actuation of lever 11. Changes may be resorted to provided they fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention In combinati0n,a lever, a control rod fitted V to the lever and extending on opposite sides thereof, means operable by hand to actuate the control rod, pneumatic means to operate the control rodpivoted to said lever, the fulcrum of said lever occurring between said pneumatic means and the pivotal connection 7 of the control rod thereto, and means for controlling the pneumatic means located relatively close to the zone of'operation of the operating means of the control rod.
