DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING AND OPERATING LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLES.

The invention relates to devices for controlling and operating locomotive whistles.
The objects ot the invention are to provide an improved whistle-operating device which is adapted for operation on the eX- treme front end of the locomotive and in front of the smoke-stack, so that the sound may be efiiciently projected; in which the steam valve and the pneumatic piston for controlling the steam valve are mounted in a single casing, so that the cylinder for the piston will be heated by the steam to prevent freezing of the parts; in which provision is made for manually operating the valve when desired; in which provision is made for cutting oil' the supply of steam to the valve casing when repairof the valve becomes necessary; and which is connected to receive superheated steam from the throttle valve casing at the front of the locomo- Other objects of the invention will appear from the detailed description.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view of a locomotive equipped with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the front end of the locomotive. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section through the casing for the steam valve for the whistle and the pneumatic device for operating it. Fig. 5 is a section on line y5--5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a plan of the device shown in Fig. 4, parts being shown in section.V Fig. 7 is a perspective of the pivoted operating member between the stems .ofk the steam-valve and the pneumatically operated piston. Fig. 8 is a. detail perspective of the arm for shifting said member.
The invention is exemplified in connection with a locomotive 1() which is provided with the usual engineers cab 11 at its rear and a smoke stack 12 adjacent its front end. The locomotive is of that type in which a superheater is used for the steam delivered to the engine cylinders, as exemplified by a superheater comprising a header 13 located in the front bulk-head 14 of theA boiler. A pipe 15 delivers steam from the dome of the boiler into the header 13. Superheater pipes 16 are upper portion of thel throttle casing is disposed outside of the front end of the boiler, and shaft 24 extends outwardly to one side of the casing and. is there connected by any sujjtable means to a lever in fthe locomotive ca A casing 26 is disposed adjacent the front of the locomotive boiler and in front of the smoke stack, and this casing supports the steam whistle 27 which may be of any suitable construction and contains a valve 28 for controlling the delivery of steam for the operation of the whistle and also contains the pneumatic device for operating said valve. The whistle 27 is supported from the casing 26 by an elbow 29 which has its upper end connected to discharge steam into the whistle-and its lower end connected to a steam outlet 30 of casing 26. An admission chamber 31 is formed in the lower portion of casing 26 and this chamber is connected to receive steam from the throttle casing 18 through a pipe 32 which is connected to the lower end of chamber 31 by an elbow 33 which is connected-to receive steam from the admission chamber 19 of the throttle casing. Chamber 31 .is oiset laterally and a cut-ofi valve 34 is mounted in the casing of steam valve 28. This valvel is adapted to close against seat 35 when it is desired to prevent the delivery of steam to the whistle, for example, if a repair should be necessary to the steam valve. From chamber 31, the steam flows through a duct 31a to a valve 28 which is adapted to close against a seat 36 and to control the delivery of steam into the outlet chamber 37 of the casing, which is connected to deliver steam to the whistle. Valve 28 is horizontally slidable, being provided with a sterny 39, one end of which is slidable in a cap 38 which is screw-threaded to the casing 26, and the other end of which f is slidable, as at 40, in the inner wall of chamber 37 of casing 26. The inner end of stem 39 projects into a recess 4l formed in ffl) the top ot the casing. A spring 42 is applied to hold valve 28 normally closed.
In practice, it is desirable to provide tor the pneumatic and manual control of the valve 28, and for this purpose a member 43 I is pivoted on a bolt 44, which is held in side walls 45 o'l the recess 4l. This member is provided with a pendent abutment 4G which is adapted to engage the inner end ot' the stem 39 ot the steam valve 28. This member is operable trom the locomotive cab 1l by means of an arm 47 which is also pivoted on pin 44 and is adapted to engage an abutment 48 on member 43 Ywhen the arm is pulled rearwardly, and said member is 'free to swing independentlyof the arm when the member is operated by the pneumatic control. A rod 49e1`tends rearwardly from the upper end ot arm 47 to a suitable lever system in the cab, so that, when the roid' is pulled rearwardly, it will operate arm 47 which will impinge against abutment 48 and swing abutment 46 forwardly to open the valve 2S. y
The pneumatically operated controllingI device for the steam valve comprisesa piston 50 which is slidably mounted in a cylinder 5l formed in a head 52`whichis removably secured to, and forms a part olli, casing 26; A stem 53 is attached to thepiston .30 and extends forwardly into position tol engage the rear face of abutment- 46, so that, when the piston is operated forwardly in its cylinder, stem 53 will operate abutment 46 forwardly against the rear end of valve stem! 39 to open valve 28l and admit steam to theV whistle.- A pipe* 54, which is adaptedto deliver' air under pressure into the cylinder 51 to operate the piston 50, leads 'from the head 52 to an air controller valve which is located in the cab and may be ot' any suitableV construction to control the delivery ot' air from a compressed air reservoir to the cylinder 5l and to exhaust the air vfrom the cylinder when the valve 28 is to be closed. When it is desired tou pneumatically control thle valve 28 for the steam whistle, vthe engineer will manipulate valve 55 to Cause air under pressure to enter cylinder 51 which will torce the piston 50 'forwardly and operate member 43 to shi-tt stem 89 o'f valve 28 forwardly to cause steam to pass to the whistle.V lVhen the air pressure is cut oit at valve 55 and there exhausted, piston 50 will be retracted by the torce of spring 42.- lVhen it is desired to manually shift the valve 28, the operator- Will manipulate the lever to pull rod 49 rearwardly which will swing member 43 to operate valve 28 independently of the pneumatic piston and its stem. In the operation of the valve 2S by the piston 5,0 through member 43, arm 47 remains stationary, so that its connection with the cab is not shifted.
The invention exemplifies controlling mechanism for a steamwhistle' in whichL the casing for the whistle valve is mounted Yith the whistle at the iront end ot the locomotive where the sound produced by the whistle is not interfered with by the elements rearwardly tiereot,f By providing this casingv at the front of the locomotive, and provi'ding it with a pneumatically operated piston, it becomes possible to dispense with y the steam connections between the casing or medial or rear portion of the boiler, which is a desideratum inl locomotive practice. The invention also exemplilies a construction in which the casingtor the whistle valve and pneumatically operated piston is connected to receive superheated steam 'trom the' throttle casing in front et the boiler to malte it possibleto utilize steam connection oi minimum length. VThe whistle,
steam'valve, and operating piston may be conveniently mounted as a unit adjacent the iront end of the boiler. The device asa whole is simple in construction andI eiiicient in operation. Y

Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new and' desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination ofA a locomotive, a steam whistle, a casing to which the whistle is connected, mounted directly upon the locomotive shell and in liront oi' the smokestack, a valve `for controlling' thc supply et steam to operate the whistle, mounted in said casing, a connectionV disposed within the shell for deliverino steam into saidca'sing and to said valve, and means controlled from the cab for opening the steam valve.
2. The combination of a locomotive, a steam whistle, a' casing to which the whistle isiconnected, disposed directly upon the locomotive shell and in trontot'l the smokestack, a valve tor controlling the supply of steam to operate the whistle,mounted int the casing, a pipe for delivering steam intosaid casing and tor said valve, said pipe being disposed Within the locomotive and having one end thereof extending through theishell and operating to support thelcasing, a fluidpressure operated piston, mounted in= said casingand adapted to open the valve,` and means for controlling the piston 'from the c'ab.-

motive, and a pipe connection for delivering steam from the throttle Casing to the valve casing, and means to operate the steam valve from the cab.
4. The combination of a locomotive, a steam whistle, a casing to which the whistle is connected, mounted adjacent the front end of a locomotive and forwardly of the stack, a valve in said casing for controlling the supply of steam to operate the whistle, a superheater mounted in the front end oit the locomotive, a connection for delivering steam from the superheater to the valve casing, and means to operate the steam valve from the cab.
5. The combination of a locomotive, a steam Whistle, a Casing to which the whistle is connected, a valve for controlling the supply of steam to operate the whistle, slidably mounted in the easing and provided with a stem, a fluid pressure operated piston slidably mounted in the casing and provided with a. stem, said stems being independent of each other so that the valve and piston may be operated independently of each other; and a device for manually operating the steam valve extended between the contigous ends of the stems, so that the steam valve may be operated by the piston-stem through said Idevice and independently by said device.
6. The combination of a locomotive, a steam Whistle, a casing to which the whistle is connected, a valve for controlling the supply of steam to operate the whistle, slidably mounted in the casing and provided with a stem, a fluid pressure operated piston slidably mounted in the casing provided with a. stem, said stems being independent of each other so that the valve and piston may be operated independently of each other; and a device for manually operating the steam-valve comprising a member between the contiguous ends of the stems, so that the valve may be operated by the piston-stem through said member and independently by said member, and a lever having a one-way connection to said member.
7. The combination with a steam whistle, of a casing to which the Whistle is connected, a connection for delivering steam into the casing, a valve for controlling the supply of steam to operate the whistle, said valve being horizontally slidable in the casing, a fluid pressure operated device comprising a cylinder in the casing and a horizontally slidable piston in the cylinder adapted to open the steam valve, the casing being provided with a steam chamber adjacent the cylinder so it will be heated by the steam, and a cutoil valve in the casing and at one side of the slidable valve.
8. rEhe combination with a steam whistle, of a casing to which the whistle is connected, a connection for delivering steam into the casing, a valve for controllingI the supply of steam to operate the Whistle, means for controlling the steam valve from the cab of the locomotive, and a cut-off valve in the casing.

The combination with a steam whistle, ot a casing to which the whistle is connected, a connection for delivering steam into the casing, a valve for controlling the supply of steam to operate the whistle, a fluid pressure operated device for shifting the valve, mounted in the casing, the latter being provided with a receiving chamber, and a cutoi valve between the receiving chamber and the steam valve.
