The object of this invention is to provide an improved construct-ion for a clamp Which is useful for gripping and securely holding objects of various kinds and sizes.
A further object of the invention is to pr vide an improved clamp having an arm which is arranged for sliding adjustment and With these and other objects in vievv my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, ashereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which:

Figure 4 is a sectional elevation on the line 4 4 of Figure 1 and illustrating particularly the pivoted arm.
Figure 5 is an elevation partly in section, illustrating the method of using the device as a clamp in connection with a bench or table.
The bar maybe of any desired shape in cross section. It is here shovvn as being of cylindrical shape and formed With a longitudinal groove 14. The aperture of the boss 18 is fitted to the cross sectional shapeof the bar 10 and suitable means may be providedto keep the arm 12 from turning on the bar. Such means is in this instance, a key 15 engaging the groove 14 and projecting Within a notch 16 openingfrom thev aperture of the boss. The free end of the standard 11 is bifurcated and aclamping arm 17 is pivoted 55 between its ends on a pin V18 extending through registering aperturesV in the bifurcated portion.
At its lowerfend the pivoted arm 17 is formed with a boss 19 having a threaded openingadapted to receive'ascrew 20. The screw 20 is formed With a head 21 through which an operating handle 22 is slidably mounted. Y j

It is obvious that considerable force can be applied to the screw devices operating upon the pivoted arm and that the threaded engagement of the'screW 20 With the threaded boss 19 Will cause the parts to remain in any plolsition in which they may be placed manua y.
The pivotal mounting of Vthe clamping head 25 permits it to automatically adjust itself to the adjacent face of an object -to be gripped as the lever 17 is moved through* an arc. Y
The slidable mounting of the clamping arm 12 permits a Considerable range of adjustment and adds greatly to the Convenience and usefulness of the device.
The devicemay also be employed after the Jfashion "of a vdse, as illustrated inFigure 5 and for this purpose the slidable arm 12 is removed from the bar 10 by endWise move ment.
For this purpose, the device is used'vvith a bench or table such as is illustrated in Figure 5, which may include a top member 28, legs 29, and an apron 30.
An aperture 31 may beform'ed in asuitable portion of thezbench structure,'asfor instance, in oneofithe legs29. The aperture 31 is adapted to receive the elongated bar 10, but if desired, a separate bushing 32 may be employed in the opening 31 Within AWhich .the bar 10 is fitted for endvvisemovement. As here shown, a face plate 33 may Valso be m'ountedover the outer end of the opening n `When'the device istobe used in this manner, the bar 10 is inserted in the opening 31 until theclaniping head 25approaches a portion of the bench structure such as an edge of the top member '28 or a face of the apron-30.
