INC., 0F SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK -AGTUATING- MECHANISM FOR PRESSING MACHINES Application led December 3, 1924. Serial No. 753,557.
, and eflicient actuating mechanism for the movable elements or press heads of such 'machines whereby the leverage between the prime mover and the power arm or treadle is increased during the closing of the press,
, that is, so that the leverage is greatest when lines.
final pressure is being applied to the press head so that less effort is required to apply final pressure. f The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
' In describing-this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which is a side elevation, partly broken away, ofy a machine embodying my invention, the position of the actuating mechanism when the press head is open being shown in broken lines andwhen the press is closed in full .a lever and a link connected to thelever and shiftable in a radial direction relatively to y the axis thereof and means for shifting said link during the opening and closing of the press. As here illustrated, the supporting and actuating-means comprises a lever supporting the press head, a power lever or treadle pivoted to the frame, intermediate motion transmitting mechanism including a lever pivoted between its ends to the frame, a link connecting Vone arm of the lever to the supporting lever and a link connecting the other arm of the intermediate lever to the treadle, one of said links being'shiftable inl a radial direction relatively to the axis of one of the levers it connects during the opening and closing of the press and means for shifting such shiftable link during the opening and closing of the press.
I have here illustrated my invention as embodied in a standard pressing machine including a suitable frame 1, a lower stationary buck 2 and a press head 3 usually carried by a yoke or lever 4 pivoted at 5 between its ends to a standard 6 rising from the frame. The frame may be of any suitable form, size and i construction.
The buck 2 is mounted on a suitable standard or goose neck 7 rising from the frame 1 or the table 8 thereof. The yoke 4 is usually provided on the rear arm thereof with a weight 9 and also springs as 10 are connected to such rear arm, the weight 9 and springs 10 serving to counter-balance the head 3 and to open the press.
1l is a prime mover or a power arm or lever, as a treadle pivoted at 12 at its rear end and having a foot plate 13 at its front end. The motion transmitting means between the treadle 11 and the yoke 4 comprises an angle lever 14 pivoted at its angle at 15 to the frame at a point located above the lever 1,1 and in front of the vertical plane of the axis 12 of the lever, a link 16 pivoted at one end at 17 to the rear arm of the angle lever 14 and at its other end at 18 to the rear arm of the yoke or press head supporting lever 4, the link 16 forming a toggle with the rear arm of the angle lever 14, and a link connecting the lever or treadle 11 and the forward arm of the angle lever 14. Means is provided for shifting the link radially relatively to ',the axis of one of the levers it connects as the press is closed and opened for changing the effective leverage` of the power lever on the press head. The toggle is formed with a stop joint to limit the movement of the link 16 and the angle lever 14 when they are in, or nearly in, a straight line.
The link 19 here sho wn, is shiftable relatively to the axis 15 of the angle lever 14 and is pivoted at its front end at 20 to the pedal lever 11 and at its other end to the forward arm of the angle lever 14, this link 19 inclining downwardly and forwardly from lever, the last mentioned arm of the angle lever being formed with a lengthwise slot and the link connecting said arm and the power lever having its pivot movable along said slot and means for shifting the pivot 'along the slot during the operation of the power arm.
5. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame, a movable press head, a lever carrying said head, the lever being pivoted to the frame, actuating mechanism comprising a power lever, an angle lever pivoted to the frame, a link pivoted at one end to one arm of the angle lever and at its other end to the supporting lever for the press head, the link forming a toggle with said arm of the angle lever, a second link pivoted at one end to the power lever and at its other end to the other arm of the angle lever by a sliding connection extending lengthwise of said other arm of the angle lever and a link pivoted at one end to the frame and connected at its other end to the link connecting the angle lever and the power arm. v
6. In a pressing machine, the combination lof a frame, a movable press head, a supporting lever for the press head pivoted between its ends to the. frame, a power arm pivoted to the frame near the lower end thereof, an angle lever pivoted to-the frame above the power arm and in front of the vertical plane of the axis of the power arm, a link pivoted at one end to the rear arm of the angle lever and at its other end to the rear arm of the supporting lever and forming a toggle with the angle lever, the link being normally ar-` ranged to stand at an angle approximating a right angle to the arm of the angle lever to which itis pivoted when the press is open and a link connecting the other arm of the angle lever andthe power arm, the arms of the lever being arranged at approximately a right angle to each other, the link being movable radially relatively to the axis of one of the levers it connect-s and means for moving the same during the opening and closing of the press.- f
7. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame, a movable press head, a supporting lever for the press head pivoted between itsends to the frame, a power lever pivoted at its rear end to the frame near the lower end thereof, an angle lever pivoted to t-he frame above the power lever and in front of the vertical plane of the axis of the power lever, a link pivoted at one endto the rear arm of the angle lever and at its other end to the rear arm of the supporting lever and forming a toggle with the angle lever, the link beine' normally arranged to stand when the pressis open at an angle approximating supporting lever for the press head pivotedy I between its ends to the frame, a power lever pivoted at its rear end to the frame near the lower end thereof, an angle lever pivoted to the frame above the power lever and in front of the vertical plane of the axis of the power arm, a link pivoted at one end to the rear arm of the angle lever and at its other end to the rear arm of the supporting lever and forming a toggle with the angle lever, the link being normally arranged to stand when the press is open at an angle approximating a right angle to the arm of the angle lever to which it is pivoted, the other arm of the angle lever being formed with a lengthwise slot, a link pivoted at its lower end to the power lever and at its upper end to the angle lever, the pivot at the upper end of said link being movable in said slot, and a link pivoted at its rear end to the frame below the pivot of the angle lever and at its front end to the link connecting the angle lever and the power arm.
9. In a garment'pressing machine having a self-opening press head, toggle-connections between the press head and the frame of the machine, an extension-bearing on one of the toggle members in front of the togglejoint and above the connection of the toggle with the frame and a pedal-operated lever having means to engage said bearing at gradually increasing distances from theconnection of the'toggle with the frame for straightening the toggle to 'force the press head to its pressing position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and in the State of New York,
this 22nd day of November, 1924.
