This invention relates to pressing machines as garment and laundry pressing machine, and ithas for its object a'si-mple, relative arrangement of the pressing elements relative- 1y to-the operator or the front of the machine whereby maximum accessibility is given to the operator for arranging and removing the work preliminary to and after the pressing operation. It further has for its object a multiple pressing machine in which the pairs of cooperating pressing elements and the actuating means are compactly arranged to give maximum accessibility to both pairs so as to facilitate and expedite theoperation of the machine by a. single operator. It further has for its object an actuating mechanisin and a relative arrangement of parts thereof with the movable elements of the multiple press; 1 v Theinventioir consists in the novel features and in the combinations and'c'onstructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.

1 designates the lower pressing element and 2 the upper pressing element, one of these elements being movable toward and from the other.- As here shown the upper element or head 2 is movable'tow'ard and from the lower element 1. The upper and lower pressing elements are substantially coextensive. The element 1- is here illustrated are carried by a suitable bracket or goose neck 3 which is suitably mounted on the frame 4.-- The framed may be of any suitable form, size and construction. in The pressing elements I and 2 are elongated and arranged to-extendforwardly and rearwardly instead of transversely as in the g'arn'ient and laundry pressing machines heretofore used. The pressing elements are also tapered from their rear ends toward their front ends. Also there are twop'a'irs of pressing elements A and B mounted on the frame, these pairs being substantially alike although they may be of different shapes if desired.
The pairs-0f pressing elements A and Bare arranged so that they converge from their front ends toward their rear ends, and the movable element 2' of each pair is carried by its own individual support. Each support in the illustrated embodiment of my invention is alever 5 pivoted between its ends at 6 to a standard 7 rising from the frame, the lever extending lengthwise, of its associated pressing element or head 2, the pivot of the lever being located in the rear of the rear end of the pressing elements. hese levers also converge toward their pivots in accordance with the convergence of the pairs of pressing elements A, In addition to the lever 5' the supporting means for each pressing element or head 2 comprises an equalizing means between the lever and the heads 2, the equalizing means having a transverse rocking bearing midway between the ends of the head 2 on the lever, and having a longitudinal rocking bearing on the head 2 midway between the side edges thereof, and the rocking movements are resisted by spring means.
. 8 designates the equalizer which has a transverse notched seat 9 for receiving a transverse projection or fulcrum 10 on the lower side of the lever 5 and also fulclums or projections 11 on the lower side thereof for engaging front and rear notchedseats Hand 13 on the upper side of the head 2. Thus the head may have tilting equalizing movements about the transverse fulcrum 10 and about longitudinal fulcrums- 11 to compensate for unevennesses in thickness of the articles being pressed. The equalizer 8 is here illustrated as provided with studs 15' extending upwardly therefrom in front and in rear of the seat 9 and extending through holes on upper side of the lever 5on opposite sides of the median line, and springs which resist the tilting movement encircle the studs and thrust downwardly on the lever and upwardly on the spring abutments as'nuts 16 on the upper ends of the studs. The head '2 is likewiseprovided with a single stud 17 extending upwardly through the .front end of the equalizer 8 and a pair of studs 18 extending upwardly from the head 2 on opposite sides of the seat 13, these studs extending through the equalizer, and springs 19 are interposed between the equalizer and spring abutments or nuts 20 on the studs 17 and 18. The studs 17 and 18 are arranged at the angles of an isosceles triangle, the stud 17 being located in the median line of the head2 and the studs 18 on opposite sides of the median line.
The means for actuating the lever 5 may be of any suitable form, size or construction, and includes a motion transmitting member common to both levers 5 and equalizer interposed between said member and the lever 5.
The actuating mechanism here shown comprises a toggle including links 22 and 23 pivoted together in 24, the link 22 being pivotally connected at its upper end to lever through an equalizer to be presently described, and the link 23 being pivoted at 25 to the frame. The toggle may be actuated by any suitable mechanism. Power mechanism is illustrated consisting of a cylinder 26 supported by the frame and having a piston movable therein,
the rod 27 of which is pivoted to the front endof a combined lever and pull link 28, the
link being pivoted at its rear end at 29 to the link23. This combined'lever and pull link 28 first fulcrums at 30 onthe frame that is it so fulcrums during the initial part of the power stroke of the piston and thereafter acts as a pull link, it being uided during t7 these movements by a cam or slot31. The

press is held closed by the pressure in the cylinder 26 and this pressurev is released to permlt the press to open by one-or the other of two release levers 34. The actuating mechanism and its control forms no part of this invention and is well known to those skilled in the art; V
The equa-lizer'between the member 22 and the lever 5 is here shown as a cross head 35 v pivotally connected at its ends at 36 to the levers 5 and also pivotally connected between its ends at138 to the member 22. This cross ,-head is here illustrated as a shaft having ballsxat its ends arranged in sockets in its levers, and the pivotal connection between the shaft 35 and the member 22 comprises a bearing member 39 mounted on the shaft.

A suitable table 41 is mounted on the frame below the bucks or elements 1, and the table is formed with the cut-out 42 in order that the operator may work to best advantage on the elements 1 of both pairs A andiB'.
As seen in Figures 5 and '6 two machines alike in construction may be arranged so that the pressingelements are in quadrangular formation and so that the operator can tend two machines with little moving about Within the quadrangle. Owing to the converging arrangement of the pair of pressing elements A and B ofeach machine two of such machines, which are in effect, four machines can-be arranged in quadrangular formation in minimum space and attended by one operator. In such an arrangement the controls 33 of one machtne may be located remote from such machine and near the other machine so that the operator first passes from one machine to the other or leaves the machine that is ready to close and operates the remote control thereof near the other machine closing the machine he has just left. However, the remote control feature forms no part of this invention and is asafety first feature as is the two hand control.
