My invention relates to picture frames, more particularly to such frames oi the standup type.

According to my invention the picture or photo frame is provided on its back with rebated undercut or grooved borders or ledges into whichl the rear wall is slipped or inserted by means of rebate or reduced part. In this way the rear wall is held down more 1U tightly than was possible up to now in photoframes, so that a better protection against dust is obtained, which mainly enters from the top. This frame has the further advantage, that the rear wall may easily be removed bodily, so that the frame may be placed upon the picture to be framed and it may then be judged which size and shape is most suitable for the picture in question. The rebated or undercut borders or ledges may be provided at one edge of the trame only, preferably the top, or on two opposite edges of the' frame. ln the former case the rear wall is closed at the bottom by ay foot ledge and locked by a latch or clip member. Preferably a recess is provided at the bottom of the rear wall into which tits a short ledge upon the frame on which the latches or clips may be conveniently mounted. This design also prevents lateral displacement of the rear wall or cover plate.

In the drawing l is the rear wall or cover plate of the picture frame 2. This wall or 45 plate is at one of its edges, preferably the top edge, provided with a rebate 3, which engages a corresponding rebate or groove t of a ledge 5 mounted at the back and near the top of the trame. iits into the recess 6 It is obvious that in this way the rear wall l is prevented from becoming displaced laterally in relation to the frame.

The rear wall and the ledges may be constructed of wood, cardboard, pressed cellulose, Celluloid or any other suitable material. The rear support 9 is attached to the cover plate by a hinge 10, one member of which is provided with lateral extensions ll, which h project beyond the support at both sides.

Various modiiications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

A stand-up picture frame, comprising a rebated ledge mounted at the back near the top of said frame, a short central ledge mounted at the bottom of said frame, a cover plate withl a rebate at the top and a central recess at the bottom fitting said central ledge on the framer` and fastening clips mounted on said short ledge.
