SUPPORT FOR PILLOWS AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 26, 1928 INVENTOR. KANN/E A. DOUGHERTY ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 14,1930
UNETED STATEfi KANNIE A. DOUGHERTY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA SUPPGET FOR PILLCfi/VS AND THE LIKE Application filed September 26, 1928. Serial No. 308,522.
This-invention provides particularly for holdin a pillow in a convenient and sanitary manner while drawing a pillow slip into place; and has for its object to provide a readily detachable supporting means, one
element of which may be attached to a pillow so as to in no way interfere with normal use of the pillow, while at the same time providing for ready engagement of said element by a cooperating suitably mounted element so as to conveniently suspend the pillow and leave the hands and arms free to draw the pillow slip into place.
It is a further object of the invention to construct the element of the detachable supporting means which is attached to the pillow, as an integral stamping bent to form a clip adapted to tightly engage the edge of a pillow with a recess beneath the clip adapted for reception of the cooperating suitably mounted element of the detachable support.
Further objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings,
in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the detachable supporting means with the elements disconnected.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the blank from which the pillow engaging clip may be formed.
Fig. i is a bottom plan view of the clip in operative position.
The invention, for the use to which it is particularly adapted, provides for suspending a pillow, one edge of which is indicated at A, from a suitably supported element B so as to leave the hands free for drawing a pillow slip into place. The element C of the detachable connection which is secured to the pillow is adapted for convenient engagement by a hook 1 on the element B, so that the pillow may be readily suspended and as conveniently removed from-the hook, with the element C in no way interfering with normal use of the pillow. The element B carrying the hook 1 may be conveniently supported in any suitable manner, preferably by forming said suspension element as a plate adapted for mounting upon a wall D by suitable fastening means shown as screws 2.
The element C is adapted for simplified and inexpensive manufacture, and preferably forms a clip received over the edge of the pillow and adapted to securely engage the same, with the clip of a pliable material adapting it for distortion as it is secured in place so as to bulge the clip'and thereby form a recess therein for detachable reception of hook 1. As an instance of this arrangement the element 0 may be stamped from a suit able pliable metal so as to form the stamping shown in'Fig. 3, the said stamping comprising an elongated medial portion 4 having transversely projecting ears 5 at the respective ends of its opposite side edges, with the outer ends of ears 5 suitably toothed as shown at 6. This stamping is bent along-its longitudinal medial line EE so as to form a clip which is U-shaped in cross-section as shown in Fig. 2, and the teeth f the opposite ears of this U-shaped clip are bent toward. one another as shown in Figs. 2 and l.
The clip is engaged over the edge of pillow A so that the pillow fits snugly against the base of the U-shaped clip, and the fingers of the hand are then employed to apply pressure lengthwise of the clip and at the same time the pairs of cooperating ears 5 at the respective ends of the clip are pressed inwardly. The teeth 6 thus pierce the pillow fo securely holding the clip in place and the longitudinal pressure which is applied to the clip outwardly bulges the medial portions of the sides of the pliable clip as shown in 2 and l, so that recesses 8 are formed beneath the medial portions of the sides of the clip with said recesses open at their lower edges 90 9 for reception of hook 1. V
The clip is thus securely fixed to the pillow so as to occupy but little space and present no obstruction Which will interfere with normal use of the pillow, and the open ends 9 of the bulging recesses 8 provide for readily suspending the clip fromhook 1 so as to conveniently support the pillow while drawing a pillow slip into place. 7 i
I claim:
' ice 1. Means for suspending a pillow so as leave the hands free for drawing a pillow slip into place, comprising a hook, means for Y mounting the hook on a supporting surface,
and a U-shaped pliable clip received over the edge of the pillow and having toothed ears at its ends, the clip being adapted to be s-ecured to the pillow by pressure against the clip lengthwise thereof, together with pressure against the ears, so that the ears pierce the pillow and the medial portion of the length of the side of the pliable clip is outwardly bulged so as to form a recess beneath said side of the clip with said recess open at its lower end for detachable reception of the hook.
2. Means for suspending a pillow so as to leave the hands free for drawing a pillow slip into place, comprising a suspended hook, and
- a U-shaped pliable clip received over the edge of thepillow and having toothed ears at its ends, the clip being adapted to be secured to the pillow by pressure against the clip lengthwise thereof, together with pressure against the ears, so that the ears pierce the pillow and the medial portion of the length of the side l' t *dl b l or the pliable c 1p 1s OUUWEU. y ul ec so as to form a recess beneath said s1de of the clip with said recess open at its lower end for detachable reception of the hook.
'3. A suspension clip U-shaped in crosssection and having end ears provided with teeth, the clip being of a pliable material and adapted to be'secured in place by pressure against the clip lengthwise thereof, together with pressure againstithe ears, for piercing engagement by the teeth and outward bulging of the medial portionof the length of the side of the pliable clip so as to form a recess beneath said side of theclip open at its lower end.
4. A suspension clip comprising a blank of pliable material having an elongated medial portion and laterally projecting ears at ,the ends of its respective sides terminating in teeth said blank being bent along its longitudinal medial line to form a U-shaped clip, with the teeth of the opposite ears of the U shaped clip bent toward one another, the clip being adapted forinounting in place by pressure against the clip lengthwise thereof together with pressure against the ears, for
v piercing engagement by the ears and outward signature,
bulging of the medial portions of the length of the respective sides of the pliable clip so as to form recesses beneath said sides of the clip open at their lower ends. g
In testimony whereof she has ahixed her KANN IE AfDOUGHERTY.
