The present invention provides I means whereby the mechanism will be automatically locked against operation after the machine has become empty audit is preferably accomplished through the medium of the articles themselves. I
This mechanismwill cause the check to-be returned to the operator in the event that the containers are empty.
To that end there is provided a lever 13 which is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends as at 14: to a suitable support 15, and j the lever is provided with a portion 16 that isarranged adjacent the path of movement of the containers. Connected with the lever is a bar or. rod 17 which is so shaped that the end 18 thereof is adapted to be projected into the path of movement of the periphery of a check 19 which is carried in a check seat 20 of a check carrier 21. I
Aspring 22 isprovided which tends normally to move the end 18 of the bar 17 into a position that'it will hold the check 19 in the seat 20vand prevent the check from being delivered from the carrier when the seat is inverted. The bar or rod 17 will assume this the check controlled mechanism and the check will drop fromthe support 24 into the machine.
The operation of the lever 13 is controlled by means of a pivotally mounted member 26 (see particularly Figure 5) which is supported by the wall of the container preferably-by one end 27 of the member engaging in a suitable opening 28 in the container wall so that the member 26 will hang for free swinging movement.
The normal position of the portion 16 of the lever 13 is within the path of movement of the member 26. i
\Vhen the container is empty and when the containers are rotated (in a manner not shown) it 'will be nianifest that'tlie member 26 will strike the portion 16 of the lever 13, but asthere is no resistance tothe member 26 it will spring backwardly into the container by its engagement with the'portion 16 of the lever 13 thereby passing the lever 13 without rocking the latter about its pivot.
When, however, there are articles 23 in the container, as shown in Figure 2, the articles will hold the member 26 projected beyond the front of the container, with the result that when the container is then'rotated the mem ber 26 will be held against retraction and;
will engage the portion 16 of the lever 13 to rock the latter about its pivot 14 and thereby withdraw the extremity 18 of the rod 17 from beneath the check 19, thereby permitting the latter to drop intothe machine.
A weight 29 is provided for the containers and this weight rests u on the articles 23, aportion of the front ec ge of the weight- 29 adjacent the member 26 being cut away as at30 so as not to interfere with the free swinging movement of the member. 26 when the container is empty of articles and the weight assumes'aposi-tion adjacent the lower portion of the member 26.
When the handle 31 which is connected with the carrier 21 is rotated and when the end 18 of the rod 17 is withdrawn to permit the check to be deposited in the machine, the shifting of the member 25 will release the check controlled mechanism torender a cam 32 operative. This cam during its rotation alternately engages projections 33 on a mem ber 34 to rock the latter and the rocking of the member 34will swing the lever 35 to ac.
tuate the ejector 36 in the manneras set forth in our copending application, and which constitutes no portion of the present invention.
As the check is delivered into'the machine it will fall down a chute or passageway 37 and the check will be arrested in its movement into the chute by the rod 17.
The weight is also preferably provided with projections 38 which extend through the open front 39 of the container and cooperate with the sides'of the opening in the front of the container so as tb insure the proper positioning of the weight 29 in the container.
lVhile the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is 1. A vending machine including a shiftable container for the articles, ejecting means for the articles, a check chute, an element movable into the chute to arrest the 'move ment of the check therethrough, an element connected with the first recited element for actuating the latter, a member carried by the container and adapted to be projected and maintained projected beyond the container by the articles in the container and to be moved into the container in the absence'of articles therein. the said member when projected and held against retraction being adapted to engage and shift the second recited element to withdraw the first said elementas the container is'shifted.
2. A vending machine including a shiftable container for the articles to be vended, a check chute, a shiftable member arranged adjacent the path of movement of the con tainer, an element connected with said member and movable into and out of the path of movement of the check through the said chute, and afreely shiftable member carried with the container and adapted to be maintained projected beyond the container by the articles in the container, whereby the last said member-will engage and shift the first said member toretract the said element.
3. A'vending. machine including a shiftable container for the articles to be vended, a check chute, a shiftable member carried adj acentthe path of movement of the container, means responsive to the movement of said member for controlling the movement of the check through the said chute, and a freely shiftable member carried with the container and adapted to be maintained projected beyond the container by the articles in the container, whereby the last said member will engage and shift the first said member to retract the said element.
4. A vending machine including a shiftable container for the articles to be vended,
a shiftable member adapted to be projected projection when the container is empty, the
said member which is carried with the container being maintained projected by articles in the container to shift said projection to retract said shiftable member.
5. A vending machine including a shiftable container for the articles to be vended, a shiftable member adapted to be projected into the path of movement of a check in the mechanism and to be retracted, a pivotally mounted lever connected with said member, and a freely movable member carried with the container and adapted tobe engaged by a portion of the lever and shifted thereby when no articles are in the container, the last said member being maintained against movement with respect to the container by articles in thecontainer to cause it to engage and shift said lever to retract the first recited shiftable member.
6. Avending machine including a shiftable container, a member carried thereby for free shifting movement with respect thereto when the container is empty, said member being maintained projected and against retraction by articles in the container, a check chute, a member adapted to be projected across said chute and to be retracted, a shiftable member connected with the last said member for actuating it, a projection on the lastysaid articles in the container to shiftable member, and means tending normally to position said projection in the path of movement of the shiftable member that is carried by the container whereby when said container is empty the said projection will engage and shift the member that is carried by the container and when articles are in the container the said projection will be shifted by the last said member.
7. A vending machine including a shiftable container for the articles to be vended, a check chute, means adjacent the path of movement of the container and operable to control the delivery of the check from said chute, and an element carried with the con tainer and controlled by the articles in the container whereby the said element will be rendered active to actuate the said means to cause the check to be released, the said element being automatically rendered inactive in the absence of articles in the container.
8. A vending machine including a shiftable container for the articles to be vended, a check chute, means adjacent the path of move ment of the container and operable to control the delivery of the check from said chute, and an element carried with the container and controlled by the articles in the container whereby the said element will be ren dered active to actuate the said means to cause the check to be released, the said element being shiftable with respect to the container by the said means in the absence of maintain the check from being released.
