This invention relates to vending machines and has for its object to provide a new and improved device'of this description.
The invention has a further object to pro- -'5 vide a vending machine for vending materials such as gum, candy and the like and which is operated by means of a coin. 'The invention has further objects which are more particularly pointed out in the accompanying description.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig.1'is a front view of one form of vending machine embodying the invention.

Referring now to the drawings, I have shown a vending machine having a-case 1 provided with an enlargement 2 at the bottom thereof. The case is provided'at' the front with a mirror 3. The case contains material to be vended and the vending mechanism. e
I have shown a case containing two sets of vending mechanism placed side by side. These two mechanisms are similar and I will describe one of them and apply the same reference numerals to the other with the addition'of the exponent a to such reference numerals.
The coins, by means of which the device is operated, are placed in the coin openings 4 and do. When the coin is placed in the .coin opening at, for example, (see Fig. 9), it passes into the coin chute 5. If a magnetic slug, instead of a coin, is inserted, it is removed 7 from the coin chute by the magnet 13 If the material has been exhausted or substantially exhausted from the material receptacle 6, the coin will be returned to the purchaser. Under these conditions, the finger 7 which is connected with the shaft 8, 50 carried by the supports 8a, and which nor mally engages thematerial in the receptacle 6 exposed through the opening 9, is forced through said opening, when the material is exposed, bythe weight 10, also connected with the shaft 8. This moves a coin stop 11 into the path of the coin in the chute and holds said coin. The movementof the coin stop which is pivotally connected to a fixed part 12 by the pivot 13, is brought about by the finger 7 through the connecting piece 14 connected with the finger 7. The coin is returned to the purchaser from; the coin stop 11 as hereinafter set out.
If there is material in the material receptacle 6, the coin stop 11 is out of the chuteand the. coin placed in the opening 4, drops through the chute into the coin holder 15 of the coin'wheel 16 mountedupon the shaft 17. T here are a plurality-of coin holders 15 on the coin wheel. W'hen the coins enter the coin holders 15, they are stopped by the project ons 18, (see Fig. 6), which hold the coins so that a portion thereof projects beyond the coin holder, as shown in Figs. 6 and 9.-This coin then connects the operating handle 19 with the material delivery member by means of the following mechanism. T heoperating handle, in this. case, rotates and is provided with a cam 19. A cam engaging part-20, preferably a roller, engages this cam and is connected with an arm 21 pivoted at 22, (see Fig. 6) to the lower part of the machine.
The arm 22 is operatively connected to a coin engaging part 23. (see Figs. 6 and 9). This connection. is made by means of a connecting piece 24 which works in a slot 25 in the arm. This connecting piece is connected with the coin engaging part 23. The coin engaging part is rotatably mounted. on the s 15 is a coin returning member :28.

The parts are further arranged so that any device larger in diameter than the proper coin will not pass into the coin holder and hence cannot be used to secure the material vended. The back plate 63 of the casing is removable for replenishing the material in the material receptacles and for removing the coins. It is locked in position by means of a locking bar 6A hinged at 65, (see Figs. 10 and 11). A lock 66 is provided in the bottom of the casin for a key by means of which the locking bar may be released or held in its locking position.
It will be noted that by means of the projections 18 the coin wheel acts to calibrate the coins and when a coin is smaller than that for which the machine is adapted this coin will fall through and not operate the device.
I claim 1. A vending machine comprising a casing, a coin chute, a coin wheel under said chute, said coin wheel provided with a coin holder into which apart of the coin is received, the other part of said coin projecting therefrom, a coin engaging device for engaging the projecting part of the coin in said coin holder, an operating handle rotatable about its central axis and accessible on the exterior of the casing, a cam connected with said handle, and means actuated by said cam for moving said engaging part so as to move the coin Wheel, a material delivering member adapted to deliver the material to be vended and an operative connection between said coin wheel and said material delivering member and means for preventing action of the device by something other than the coin for which the device is adapted.

A vending machine comprising a casing, a coin chute one side of which consists of a pivoted spring pressed member, a coin wheel under said chute, said coin wheel provided with a coin holder into which a part of the coin is received, the other part of said coin projecting therefrom, a coinengaging device for engaging the projectingpart of the coin in said coin holder, an operating handle rotatable-about its central axis and accessible on the exterior of the casing, a cam con nected with said handle, and means actuated by said cam for moving said coin engaging part so as to move the coin wheel, a material delivering member adapted to deliver the material to be vended, and an operative connection between said coin wheel and said ma terial delivering member, said material delivcring member provided with a series of faces adapted to be successively brought in position to receive the material to be discharged.

A vending machine comprising a casing, a coin chute, a coin wheel under said chute, said coin wheel consisting of two separate members separated by a space and provided with a coin holder into which a part of the coin is received, the other part of said coin projecting therefrom, a coin engaging device for engaging the projecting part of the coin in said coin holder, an operating handle rotatable about itscentral axis and accessible on the exterior of the casing, a cam connected with said handle, and means actuated by said cam for moving said coin engaging part so as to move the coin wheel, a material delivering member adapted to deliver the material to be vended, an operative connection between said coin wheel and said material delivering member, a coin stop for preventing the coin from entering the coin holder when the material to be vended has been exhausted, and means for returning said coin to the purchaser.

A vending machine comprising a casing, a coin chute, a coin wheel under said chute, said coin wheel provided with acoin holder into which a part of the coin is received. the other part of said coin projecting therefrom, a coin engaging device for engaging the projecting part of the coin in said coin holder, an operating handle rotatable about its central axis and accessible on the exterior of the casing, a cam connected with said handle, and means actuated by said cam for moving said coin engaging part so as to move the coin wheel, a material delivering member adapted to deliver the material to be vended an operative connection between said coin wheel and said material delivering member, and means for preventing a device different in diameter from the coin for which the machine is adapted, from lodging in said coin holder.
