My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly efficient display device having means for mounting the same on a carton or the like. The display device while intended for general use is especially well adapted for use as a sign for advertising the contents of a carton or other receptacle on which the display device is mounted.

To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indi cate like parts throughout the several, views.

Referring to the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a perspective View. of the display device mounted on a carton;

Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1 with the exception that the parts are viewed from the back;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, on an enlarged scale;

Fig. 4 is a View partly in plan and partly in horizontal section taken on the line H of Fig. 3; and

Fig. 5 is a face view of a blank from which the display device is formed.

In the drawings there is illustrated a carton A on which the improved display device is mounted. The display device is formed from a single sheet of cardboard or other relatively stiff material and, as shown, is of substantially rectangular form with the two lower corners thereof shaped toform ogee curves. In forming the display device it is first blanked, as shown in Fig. 5, and includes a body member 6 in the bottom portion of which is a notch 7 of such width as to receive the carton A with a relatively snug fit, as best shown in Fig. 1.

The stock required to, form the notch 7 is substantially, all used, without detaching the same from the body member 6, to form cer tain elements required to hold the display device on the carton A in an upright position. braces 10 and a pair of anchor lugs 11. The retaining lugs 8 project into the notch 7 from the upright edges thereof and at the lower inner corners of the prongs formed by said notch. The base member 9 extends into the notch 7 from its upper edge and is located at the center thereof. Formed with the upri ht edges of the base member 9 are the two braces 10 and the anchor lugs 11 are formed with the lower ends of said braces.

A folding line 12 is formed at the junction between the body member 6 and the base member 9 and folding lines 13 are formed between the base member 9 and the braces 10. These folding lines 12 and 13 are formed by scoring or otherwise creasing the sheet. It is important to note thatthe folding lines 18 are in downwardly diverging relation for a purpose that will presently appear. The anchor lugs 11 are severed from the base member 9, as. indicated at 14. The braces 10 at their'upper edges extend the full distances between the base member 9 and the upright edges of the notch 7 and are cut away at 15 to leave feet 16 on the upper corners of said braces. These braces 10, at their lower ends, and the anchor lugs 11 are in substantially the form of semi-circles and the upright edges of said braces are in upwardly diverging relation. To apply the display device tothe carton A the base member 9 is first bent out of the notch 7 into a position in which it extends substantially perpendicular to the body memher 6. The braces 10 are then bent laterally upward on the folding lines 13 into positions in which they are substantially perpendicular to the base member 9. The movement of the braces 10 brings the anchor lugs 11 into downturned positions in which they project below the base member 9; With the members 9 and 10 thus adjusted the display device is placed in a position on the carton A in which the front upper portion of said'carton extends into the notch 7- and is straddled thereby. In this position of the display device on the carton A it is slightly rearwardly inclined with the body member 6 at the transverse portion of the notch 7 resting on the top of the carton A slightly rearward'of the front face thereof and with the retaining lugs 8 overlapping and engaging the face of the carton A. The base member 9 rests on the top of the carton A with its free end flush with the back thereof and with the anchor lugs 11 engaging the back of the carton A.

Obviously the prongs of the body 9, formed by the notch 7, by their engagement with the sides of the carton A hold the display device against edgewise shifting movement on said carton and the retaining lugsS and the anchor lugs 11 by their engagement with the front and back of the carton A, respectively,hold said device from shifting either forward or backward thereon.

The feet l6 when the braces 10 are adjusted into upright positions-move through the arcs of circles having their centers at the folding lines 13 and due to the convergingrelation of said braces their feet 16 during the raising of the braces 10 gradually approach the rearwardly inclined body member 6 untilsaid braces have nearly reached uprightposition and then-said feet gradually recede from said member as the braces 10 are brought into upright or slightly inwardly inclined positions. The bending of the braces 10 on the their folding lines 13 into upright positions places the same under slight tension so that when they are released the tendency thereof is to spring backward but they are held from doing so by the rearwardpressure of theinclined body member 6 thereon and the tension on said braces is not suflicient to overa come said body member. Furthermore, when the braces ltlare brought into upright positions the body member 6 is pressed forward by the feet 16 causing said body to rockon-the top of the carton A and thereby swing its prongs rearward which presses the retaining lugs 8 against the face of the carton A. This forward movement of the body member 6 also moves the base member 9 forward on the top of the carton A and draws its anchor lugs 11 against the back of said carton.

Obviously when the display device is mounted on the carton, as above described,

said carton may bemoved without disturbing the display device held thereon. The above display device is especially well adapted for advertising the contents of cartons or the like placed in windows or on counters and the positionsofthe cartons may be shifted or -moved from time to time without disturbing the display device mounted thereon.

1. A device of theclass described hav'ing a bifurcated bottom portion adapting the device to straddlea carton and be supported thereon, said device having on the prongs of 7 in its bottomportionadapting the device to straddle a carton,retaining lugs on the prongs formed by said notch arranged to overlap and engage the face of the carton, a brace arranged to rest on the carton and hold. the

notch in its bottom portion, a pair of retaining lugs projecting into the notch from the upright edges thereof, a base member projecting into the notch from the top there- -of, a brace 011 the base member extending into the notch, an anchor lug at thelower end of the brace, said base member being arranged to be folded into a position in which it projects out ofthe notch rearward from the device and permits the devicelto straddle l a the carton with its retaining lugs overlapping and engaging the front face thereof and with the base memberresting on the top 'of the carton, said brace being arranged to be turned into a position in which'it engages theback of the device for holding the same upright with the anchor lug extending downwardly and engaging the carton at the back there'of.

A device of the class described formed from a single sheet of material and having a notch in its bottom portion, a pair of retaining lugs projecting into the notch from the upright edges thereof, a base member projecting into the notch from the top thereof and having on its u'pright-edgesa pair of reversely and outwardly extended braces pro ecting into the notch and folding lines between the braces and base member, said braces having anchor lugs on their lower ends that extend toward each other, said base member bein arranged to be folded into a position in which it projects outward of the notch rearward from the device and leaves said notch unobstructed andpermits the device to straddle a carton with said retaining lugs overlapping and engaging the front face thereof and with the basemember resting on the top of the carton, said braces be- :ing arranged to be folded on their folding lines into positions in which they engage the back of 'the device and hold the same upright with the anchor lugs extending downwardly and engagingthe carton at itsback.

6. Ardevice of'the classdescribed formed from a single=sheet of material having a notch in its bottom portion, a pair of retaining lugs projecting into the notch from the upright edges thereof, a base member projecting into the notch from the top thereof and having a folding line at its junction with the body of the device, said base member having on its upright edges a pair of reversely and outwardly extended braces projecting into the notch and folding lines between the braces and base member, said braces having anchor lugs on their lower ends that extend toward each other, said base member being arranged to be folded on its folding line into a position in which it projects outward of the notch and rearward from the device and leaves the notch unobstructed to permit the device to straddle a carton with the retaining lugs overlapping and engaging the front face thereof, and with the base member resting on the top of the carton, said braces being arranged when folded on their folding lines to extend upward from the base member for engagement with the back of the device to hold the same upright with the anchor lugs extending downwardly and engaging the carton at its back.

7. The structure defined in claim 6 in which the folding lines between the braces and the base member are in downwardly diverging relation.

8. The structure defined in claim 6 in which the folding lines between the braces and the base member are in downwardly diverging relation and in which the upper ends of the braces are notched to leave feet at the outer upper corners of the braces.
