The invention relates to pencils and has as an object the provision of a combined holder and sharpener. p

It is a further object ofthe invention to provide. a holder for a pencilrcarrying a pencil sharpener and having means to feed the pencil through the sharpener whereby the point maybe exposed for use. 3

It is a further object of the-invention to provide a clip carried by the holder and foldable to position'for retaining the holder in the pocket of the user and also movable to a position to serve as a handle in the operation of sharpening thepencil. g

It is a further object of the invention to provide a holder in the form of a cover for the pencil whereby the pencil may be used down to a short length, the holder providing means of unchanging length for manipulating the pencil; I

As shown the device comprises a tubular envelope 10 desirably formed of thin metal having internal grooves 11, shown as two in number, desirably formed by outwardly pressing the metal of the envelope, the external ribs 12 produced in the formation of the internal grooves desirably terminating at a point as 13 midway of'the length of the pencil, thus producing slots 14, through a portion of the length of the envelope, the

To retain the clip in the position shown in Fig. 1, the member 26 is shown as provided with lips 30 having their ends 31 outwardly flared so as to snap, about the body of the tubular member. The member 26 is provided with the pocket clip member 32 to engage over the edge of a pocket of the user. lVhile the sharpener bearing the member 26 is shown in combination with the tubular container 10 it will be obvious that the sharpener and clip may be applied to a pencil without the mem ber l0, the lips 30 then engaging the surface of the pencil itself when in the position of Fig.1, and still secure some of the advantages of the invention. Therefore where in the following claims it is recited that the member 26 is incontact with the pencil, the tubular member 10 isto be read as the pencil for purposes of coactionwith the member 26 and lips 30.

Since the internal threads of the cap are of the same character as those at 21 inthe sharpener, as for instance both right hand threads, any tendency of the cap to revolve upon the pencil will'only tighten the same thereon. The cap may therefore be regarded as rigidly mounted on the pencil. While screw threads have been shown for purposes of illustration,.as amounting for the cap,

other forms of non-rotatable mounting may obviously-be utilized.

In operation the cap 22 is screwed upon the endof a pencil and the end to be sharpened is inserted into the cylinder which is screwed thereon until the pencil is sharpened whereupon the pencil and cap 22 are introduced into the tubular element 10 with the wings 24. lying in the internal grooves 11. The ends of the tubular envelope by virtue of the spring action provided by slots 14 are then snapped upon the end of the sharpener.

When it is desired to sharpen the pencil to feed moreleadfrom the opening 17, the clip member 26 is swung to the position shown in Fig. 2 and utilized asleverage to hold the sharpener stationary, revolution of member 10 causing revolution ,of the pencil within the threads 21 to feed the pencil through the sharpener. The clip 26 may be then swung to the position shownin Fig. 1 and placed in the pocket of. the user, the member 32 thereof engaging-over the edge of the pocket to prevent escape therefrom.

Minor changes may bemade in the physical embodiment of the invention within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit thereof.

I claim: I

1'. A combined pencil sharpener and clip comprising, in combination, a sharpener having a cutting edgeand internal screw threads adapted to cut into the wooden port-ion of a pencil and thereby feed the pencil against the cutting edge, a member pivoted on said sharpener to swing to a posit-ion perpendicular to the pencil and to a position in contact therewith, a pair of clips carried by the member adapted to engage about the pencil to hold the member in contact therewith.

2. A. combined pencil holder and sharpener comprising, in combination, an internally screw threaded sharpener, a pencil holder revolubly mounted upon said sharpener, means independently mounted upon a pencil adapted to telescope in said holder and means to prevent relative rotation between said pencil carried means and said holder.

3. n combined pencil holder and sharpener comprising, in combination, asharpener having a cutting edge and internal screw threadsto feed a pencil to said cutting ed e, a tubular casing removably androtatably engaging said sharpenensaid casing having internal longitudinal grooves,a cap rigidly engageable with the pencil and telescoping in said casing, projections carried by the cap slidable in said grooves whereby rotation of the casing relative to the sharpener will feed the pencil to said cutting edge.

4. A combined pencil holder and sharpener comprising, in combination, a sharpener having a cutting edge and internal screw threads to feeda pencil to said cutting edge, a tubular holder member removably and rotatably engageable with saidsharpener, a cap member to be rigidly mounted on a pencil, said cap and pencil telescoping with said tubular member, one of said members provided with a longitudinal groove and the other member with a projection sliding in said groove to prevent relative rotation between said members whereby relative rotation between said holder and sharpener may feed the contained pencil through the sharpener.

A combined pencil holder and sharpener comprising, in combination, a sharpener having a cutting edge and a cylindrical portion formed with internal cutting screw threads to feed a pencil to the cutting edge, a holder having a longitudinal slot to provide a resilient-ly, expansible portion at an open end, a circumferential bead and a circumferential groove one carried by each of said portions coact-ing to mount the holder removably and rotatably upon the sharpener, an internal groove in said holder forming a continuation of saidslot, a cap to be rigidly mounted on the pencil and a projection carried by the cap slidable in the slot and groove to prevent relative rotation between the pencil and holder.
