CABINET.
Application filed December 14, 1927. Serial No. 239,872.
The present invention relates to cabinets, such as those known as radio and console types of cabinets.
Among the objects of theinvention isto provide a novel cabinet having compartments provided with mutuallyor simultaneously operated doors, whereby upon the opening of one of the doors, such as a swinging door for a compartment enclosing a radio device or receiving apparatus to give access to the operating and tuning parts thereof, another or other doors may be simultaneously operated, such as sliding doors opposite a bell of a horn that may be located in another compartment, for permitting the passage of sound from the horn.
Other objects, capabilities, advantages and features are comprehended by the invention as will later appear and are inherently possessed thereby.
Referring` to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical side elevation and partly in broken sections taken in a plane represented by line 1-1 in Figure 2 of the drawings, and Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken in a plane represented by line 2 2 in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the invention is shown as embodied in a cabinet having supporting legs 1, a top 2, side walls 3 and 4, a front wall 5 and a back 8 Within the cabinet are provided an upper compartment 7 and a lower compartment 8 separated by a partition 9, with the compartment having a lower partition 10. Within the upper compartment may be included a radio receiving apparatus 11 having suitable tuning means 12, and in the lower compartment may be located a loud speaking horn 13 having a bell 14. In the front wall of the cabinet and for 'each compartment is provided an opening 15 which serves for giving access to the radio receiving apparatus and an opening 16 which affords passage of sound proceeding from the bell of the horn.
For the upper opening 15 is provided a swinging door or ledge 17 suitably hinged at its lower edge to the forward edge portion of the partition 9, the door being adapted to swing outwardly to close the opening 15 and frontwardly to a horizontal position, as shown in Figure 1, for affording access to the radio apparatus as well as acting as av table or ledge. This door has secured to it a strap or pivot member "18 suitably connected by way of a link 19 to a pin 20 forming a part of a connecting rod or sliding member 21, the pin portion being capable of sliding in a slot 22 provided vin ya, plate 23 located at one endv of the coming, there are provided a pair of sliding,
doors 26 and 27 having upper and lower tongues 28 and 29 adapted to ride in grooved members 30 and 31 as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. These doors 26 and 27 are adapted to slide over and adjacent the wall sections 24 and 25.
For the purpose of operating these doors simultaneously with the door 17, the door 27 carries a plate 32 having a ball and socket connection with a connecting link or arm 33, the outer end of which is pivotally connected to an arm 34 of a rocking member 35 pivotally supported upon a pivot pin 36 rigidly carried by a fixed part -of the cabinet. The other door 26 has secured to it an arm 37, the outer end of which is pivotally connected to a link 38 running to and being pivotally connected to an arm 39 forming a rigid part of the rocking member 35. The rocking member also has another arm 40 at the outer end of which is pivotally connected the connecting rod or sliding member 21. The lower wall or partition 1() is provided with slots 41 and 42 for the movement therein of the arm 37 and rocking member 35, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
In the use and operation of the device, the doors are normally closed, but when the user or operator desires to make use or operate the radio device, the door 17 may be swung from its closed position to the open position thereof shown in Figure 1. This will cause a draft on the link 19 thus causing the pin 2O to slide downwardly in the slot 22, and at the same time cause a downward movement of the connecting rod 21. This will cause a rocking of the rocking member 35 in an anti-clockwise direction as shown in Figure 2 -of the drawings. Thus, the arm 34 will draw the lilik 33 and the door 27 to the left thus opening part of the opening 16. At the same time the arm 39 Will move toward the right as shown in Figure 2, thus causing the link 38 to move the arm 37 and hence the door 26 to the right, thus opening the other part of theopening 1G. In this Way the opening 16 is now 'ree to permit thepassage of sound proceeding Jfrom the horn 13 and the bell 14 thereof. The opposite or converse operation is that When the door 17 is raised to closed position the link 19 Will cause 'the rod 21 to move upwardly and rock the rocking member 35 in the opposite direction, thus causing the ,doors 27 .and 26 to be` simultaneously moved'tovvard each otherto close the opening 16. f
While I have herein describedand upon the drawings shown an illustrativeembodi- `ment of the inventiomit is to be understood `claim A cabinet comprising compartments havp ing openings in a vertical Wall of the cabinet, doors for said openings, one of said openings having a plurality of doors, a rocking member near the latter and having links lconnected to each of said latter doors to `move said latter doors to and from each other for closing and opening the opening thereof, and another link connected to said `member and a door for another opening.
InWitness-'Whereo I hereunto subscribe my name to this specification.
