Description

A 211929. R; L. wREN 1,726,417
ATTACHMENT F on TOILETS Fild Feb. 4, 1929 Russell L Wren 4 Patented Aug. 27, 1929.
UNITED STATES RUSSELL LLOYD WBEN, OI JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI.
ATTACHMENT FOR TOILETS.
Application filed. February 4, 1929.. Serial No. 337,363.
I trade.
The object of the invention is toprovide a device of this character which will enable one to comfortably recline against the same and which will perform a therapeutical function by maintaining the posture of the body in such a manner that the lower bowel is straightened and put in a more vertical position, hence evacuation of the bowels is materially aided; all as will be hereinafter more articularly specified and claimed.
Re erring to the accompan ing'drawings, which are made a part hereo and on WhlCh similar reference characters indicate similar parts, p
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating one application of my invention,
Figure 2 is a similar view with the parts in a different position, andwith parts broken Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of a seat having my invention applied thereto, and
Figure 4, a side elevation illustratin the device applied to a toilet having no lid and supported from a supply pipe.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the base of a toilet having a hinged seat 11 and a hinged lid 12, all of which are of conventional construction. The lid 12 is shown elevated inFig. 1, lowered in Fig. 2, and is omitted in Fig. 4.
My invention consists in the application of a body 13 to the bottom or under side of the lid 12 in a manner to bear againstdhe small of the back of an individual just above the hips when .seated upon the toilet.
While I have shown the device in Figs. 1 and 2 attached to the under side of the lid 12, as shown in Fig. 4 the body 13 may be supported in any other desired manner, or if desired, may be formed integrally with the lid 12. The body 13 is provided with sides 15 which may be flat as shown, or any other desired shape, and a relatively broad curved surface 16 of a sufiicient width to form a comfortable su port for the back, and yet the device is o a size capable of being disposed whenin inoperative position in a position depending through the seat 11 in the bowl of the base 10. On the under surface of the body at each end of the same is secured a strap 17 provided with a longitudinal slot 18 for the accommodation of a screw or the lid 12. a
. In Fig. 4 I hai e shown a diiferent'style of toilet which does not have a lid, such toilet being supplied with a water pipe upon which I mount the body 13 by means of abracket 14 having a clamp 14 at its lower end, which may be adjusted vertically ofthe pipe 20 for varying the position of the ody 13. f
In considering what has been done heretofore alon this line. I am aware that efforts towar s sanitation and special comfort have been made, including the provision of foot rests, back rests, arm rests and the like, as well as the provision of toilet chairs having pivoted backs and other features for rendering them comfortable to the user. However, the provision of a solid body which is not a cushion and which is curved to fit snugly in position against the back of a person reclining against the same is an important novel feature of the present invention.
My device, or Relaxative, may be made of any desired material, preferably however corresponding to the material of which the toilet seat and lid are constructed; for example wood, hard rubber composition, or the like material, or of light metal such as for example aluminum, and may be either made separatelyas shown, or formed integrallywith the lid. By the use of my device certain therapeutic advantages are ob tained which while not readily apparent are recognized by members of the medical profession, and while my device enables one to comfortably recline against the same it causes the body to assume a position such that the lower bowel is straightened and placed in a substantially vertical position;
ence evacuation is materially assisted, constipation and piles are prevented, and the habit of correct posture is formed.
It will be obvious to those skilled in theart that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I, therefore, do not limit myself to what'is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as set forth in the a pended claims.
Having thus fu ly described m said invention, what I clalmas new an desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An attachment adapted to be associated semi-cylindrical formation conforming to the longitudinal curvature of the back for supporting the same in a comfortable position, and meansfor supporting said body in a position to contact with the small of the back of a person seated on said toilet, substantially as set forth.
2. An attachment for toilets comprising a body of substantially semi-cylindrical formation adapted to be supported in relation to the toilet seat in a manner to engage the small of the back of a person reclining against the same when seated on the toilet, the semi-cylindrical surface of said 'body being substantially non yielding, and adjustable connections at each end of, the semicylindrical surface of said body for securing the body to the under side of the hinged lid of a toilet whereby the lid may be closed when the'toilet is not in use and in such position the body will be held suspended within the bowl through and in spaced relation to the seat, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Jefferson City, Missouri, this 31st day of January, A. D. nineteen hun dred and twenty-nine.
RUSSELL LLOYD WBEN.
