IMPROVEMENT IN NURSERY-CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1W2A55, dated January 18, 1876; application filed November 6, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEwIs P. LAWRENCE, of Port Morris, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined High Chair, Low Chair, and Table, of which the following is a specification:

Fig. 5 is a side view of the chair arranged as a low stationary chair. Fig. 6 is a top view of the low stationary chair. Fig. 7 is a top view of the low rocking-chair. Fig.8 is a detail cross-section of the table taken through the line 00 as, Fig. 2.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved article of furniture which shall be so constructed that it may be arranged for use as a childs high chair, as a low chair and table, as a low rocking-chair, and as a low stationary chair, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.

The invention consists in the table made with a hollow top, provided with doors, box and cover, catch-plates, and spring-catch, to adapt it to serve as a pedestal for the chair, and as a play-table; in the chair formed of the seat, upholstered on both sides, the frame with the fiat rail, and provided with hinged catchbolts, and the frame provided with the curved or rocker rail, the foot-rests, and the guard-bar; in the combination of a chair and table with each other, as hereinafter fully described, to adapt them to be used as a high chair, and as a chair and play-table, as set forth.

A are the legs, and B is the top of the ta ble, which is designed to serve as a base or pedestal for the high chair, as shown in Fig. 1, and also as a play-table, as shown in Fig. 3. The legs A may be made plain or ornamental, as may be desired. The top B is made hollow and with two doors, 12 at one side of its cover, hinged at their outer edges, so that they may be turned back to allow playthings for the child to be placed in the cavity for the child to play with, so that he will not be all the time dropping them upon the floor. In the center of thebottom of the-top'B is formed a large hole, in which is inserted a box or well,

b to serve as a receptacle for the playthings when not required for use. The box I) is covered with a plate, 11 as shown in Fig. 1. O is the chair, the seat 0 of which is upholstered upon both sides, andthe two parts 0 c ot' the frame are so formed that either may be used as a base or as a back and arms. The parts 0 and e are formed of a bent rail, connected with the seat-frame by bars or posts. The rail of the part c is flat, so that when the said part is used as a base, the chair may stand firmly. The rail of the part c is made longer, and is so curved as to adapt it to serve as rockers. The elongation of the rail of the part 0 gives such a form to said part that the child can lean back and rest comfortably in it. To the forward ends of the rail of the part c are attached foot-rests c for the child to rest its feet upon, so as tobe able to rock itself. To the forward ends of the rail of the part c are hinged knob or catch bolts 0 the heads of which are inserted in slotted catch-plates b attached to the table-top B.

To the tabletop B is also attached a springcatch, b to catch upon the bend of the rail of the part c to hold the chair securely upon the said table when the device is arranged as a high chair. The hinged catch-bolts c and plates I) also serve to connect the chair and table when the chair is placed at the side of the table, as shown in Fig. 3. The part c of the chair-frame is also provided with a crossbar, 0 connecting its arms, to prevent the child from falling out when placed in it.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The table A B, made with a hollow top,
