CHAIR Filed Jan. 50, 1968 S Sheets-Sheet 5 United States Patent 3,485,527 CHAIR Alexander S. Barghout, Milton, Mass. (739 Boylston St., Boston, Mass. 02199) Filed Jan. 30, 1968, Ser. No. 701,712 Int. Cl. A47c 7/00 US. Cl. 297445 10 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A chair has a back, a seat attached thereto, and rear and front supports attached to said back and seat respectively. Said front support serves as a single leg and is inset laterally at opposite sides of the seat to provide leg room under the seat. A joiner extending between said front and rear supports holds both in predetermined position.
One object of my invention is to construct a chair that provides comfort for a person, especially his legs, and yet is sturdy and sound.
Another object is to so construct said chair that the main parts interconnect one with: the other, thereby using a minimum number of parts and yet presenting an unusually attractive piece of furniture.
A further object is to so construct and position the front and rear supports that a person may lean forward sufficiently to raise the rear support or legs from the floor, and make a pivotal movement on the front leg or support to thereby change his position or draw away from a table while remaining on the seat.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawings nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a front and side perspective view of my chair.
FIG. 2 is a rear and side perspective view of my chair.
FIG. 3 is a front elevational view thereof.
FIG. 4 is a top plan view thereof.
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 3.
As illustrated, my chair has a back that extends above and below a seat 14 later described. Said back has a slot 11 therethrough to receive a persons hand. It also has an opening 12 below slot 11 which makes the back of a person seated more comfortable.
Said seat 14 has two extensions providing attaching ends 16 and 18 which extend beyond its rear edge and pass through said back 10. They are joined to said back by retainers 20 and 22, shown as wedge-shaped, and that extend respectively through said seat attaching ends 16 and 18 and bear against the rear surface of said back. Locking members shown as pins 24 and 26 that respectively extend laterally through said ends 16 and 18 and through said locking members 24 and 26 firmly unite said seat to said back.
A rear support 30 is attached to said seat 14 by countersunk screws 32 which are covered by plugs 32a. This member 30 preferably commences at a point lower than said back and extends diagonally downward and outward terminating at opposite side extremities by two integral leg portions 34 and 36. The latter are spaced apart by a 3,485,527 Patented Dec. 23, 1969 ICC cut-out or intermediate opening 38 at the bottom of said rear support 30.
A front support 40* serves as a single leg that is attached to said seat 14 by dowel pins 41 that enter each member. It is below and spaced laterally from opposite sides of said seat hence there is considerable leg room at opposite sides of said front support 40 and under the seat.
I preferably provide a base 42 that is wider than the adjoining portion of said front support 40, the latter having a tongue 43 extending into said base. The overlap or extensions 44 and 45 at opposite sides of said base 42 where the latter meets the adjoining portion of said front support 40, make convenient foot rests for the feet of a person who prefers to support his feet off the floor.
A joiner 48 extends through said front support 40 and said rear support 30 to thereby join said. front and rear supporting legs and maintain each in predetermined position.
Retainers 50 and 52 similar to members 20 and 22 extend through opposite ends of said joiner 48 at points respectively forward of said front support 40 and rearward of said rear support 30. Pins 54 and 56 pass laterally through ends of joiner 48 and respectively through said retainers 50 and 52. Cushioned metal feet 60 are attached to said front support 40 and to said legs 34 and 36.
What I claim is:
1. A chair comprising a seat, a back, first means attaching said seat to said back, a rear support attached to said back and extending downwardly and rearwardly thereof therefrom, only one front support attached to said seat and extending downwardly therefrom, a joiner extending between said front and rear supports and having attaching extensions at opposite ends extending through said front and rear supports, and second means holding said joiner to said front and rear supports.
2. A chair as set forth in claim 1, said seat extending outwardly at opposite sides laterally beyond said front support whereby spaces are provided under said seat for the legs of a person said front support being adjacent the front edge of said seat.
3. A chair as set forth in claim 2, said front support having a base below an adjoining portion thereof and extending laterally beyond said adjoining portion at opposite sides of the latter whereby foot rest portions are provided at the top surface of said base.
4. A chair as set forth in claim 1, said rear support extending diagonally rearward and downward from said back.
5. A chair as set forth in claim 1, said seat having two attaching extensions extending through said back, said first means embodying retainer members extending through said attaching extensions and having flat surfaces bearing against the rear surface of said back.
6. A chair as set forth in claim 5, and locking pins extending laterally through opposite sides of said attaching extensions and through said retainer members.
7. A chair as set forth in claim 1, and retainer membets extending through said joiner attaching extensions and having fiat surfaces bearing against the outside surfaces of said front and rear supports.
,8. A chair as set forth in claim 1, said rear support having an opening intermediate opposite sides thereof, and having two leg portions at opposite sides of said opening and extending downwardly and constituting the side extremities of said rear support.
9. A chair as set forth in claim 6, and retainer members extending through said joiner attaching extensions and bearing against the outside surfaces of said front and rear supports.
10. A chair as set forth in claim 9, said rear support having an opening intermediate opposite sides thereof, and
