Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT QEEL2E GEORGE W. HADFIELD AND FRANK E. CLARK, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y..
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. MYQAQQ, dated January 18, 1876; application filed December 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that We, GEORGE W. HADA FIELD and FRANK E. CLARK, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State ot' New. York, have invented an ImprovementA in Lamps; and we do hereby declare that the followingl is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same.
Our invention consists in a novel construe tion and combination of a lamp fonnt or reservoir and a holderfor the same, whereby provision is made for attaching' said holder t0 a gas fixture or bracket, and for readily con-` necting' and disconnecting the lamp to and from the holder.
ln carrying out our invention we construct the fount or reservoir with two parallel ribs or flanges on or near its bottom, extending` laterally in opposite directions.
The lamp-holder consists ot' a plate having its edges turned upward and then inward to ward each other for engagement with the ribs or tlanges on the lamp, so as to overhang and clamp the saine, so that the lamp may be made tl. slide in the holder in order to connect or disconnect the two parts; or, instead ot' the overhanging edg'es, the holder lnay be provided with lugs or lips on one side and ascrew on Vthe other, after the manner ot' a shade-holder. 'lhe lampholder is provided with a socket having an internal screw-thread corresponding with the threads by which gas-burners are attached to ordinary gas xtures or brackets, so that the lamp maybe readily connected to and supported by a burner arm or bracket by removing the burner and attaching the lampeholder in its stead.
rlhe accompanying drawing illustrates a inode ot' carrying out our invention, Figure 1 being a side view, with a portion otA a burnerarm shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 2, an end View ofthe lamp and holder.
Thefount or reservoir A may be of any suitable. material, but. it is preferably transparent in order to present little or no obstruction to the downward passage of the light. ItV may be of any ordinary or suitable form, but for some purposes it may be desirable to have it of greater length than width, as shown in the drawing', and provided with two or more burner-caps, a o, and a feeding-cap, a. On or near the bottom ot' the fount are two ribs or flanges, B B, which extend laterally in opposite directions, and run about parallel with each other longitudinally for any suitable distance. The lamp-holder consists of a plate, O, ot' cast or sheet metal, or other suitable material, having its edges d d turned upward and then inward toward each other, so as to clamp or overhang the edges ot' the iianges B B when in contact therewith. When made in this form the lamp is connected with or removed from it by sliding the anges B B on the plate O, and between and under the turned-in edges d d. When the holder is provided with lugs on one side and a screw on the other, as before mentioned, the lamp is held in place by tightening the screw and released by loosening it. The lamp-holder is provided on its bottom with a socket, E, which may be made in one piece with the plate O, o r attached in any suitable manner. On the internal surface of this socket is a screw-thread corresponding with the threads by which gas-burners are attached to arms or brackets. By removing the burner from its seat the lamp-holder O may be readily screwed onto one ot' these arms or brackets in place ot' the burner, and thus provide for supporting the lamp A by said arm or bracket.
By the use ot' this invention the occupants ot' stores, dwellings, or other buildings are enabled to utilize their gas-lixtnres in cases where they are not supplied with gas or pre fer to use oil instead thereof; and the peculiar construction ofthe lamp enables it to be readily detached from the holder and carried about or used in the same Inanner as an ordinary lamp.
What we'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a lamp constructed with iianges, as described, of, a lamp-holder provided with a socket for attaching it to a gas-'burner arm or bracket, and having turnedin edges or lugs for embracing the flanges on the lamp, substantially as herein set forth.
