My invention relates to tools for dressing or grinding the walls of grooves, more particularly tools for dressing or grinding the bottom of the helical groove of a feed wheel or cylinder such as the feed wheel of a centerless grinding machine. It has for its principal objects means for easily and accurately dressing or grinding the bottoms of such helical grooves and for easily accommodating the nice adjustments required in such a device.
The invention consists principally in a grinding wheel adapted to be set to conform to the lead of a helical groove and mounted on a slidable hanger that is provided with means engaging a side wall of a groove,
whereby the grinding wheel may be fed along the groove by rotating the feed wheel or other member whose groove is being dressed. The invention further consists in the groove dressing tool and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The accompanying drawing shows my invention-embodied in a tool for dressing the bottom of the helical feed groove 1 in the feed wheel 2 of a centerless grinding machine, such as is used, for instance, in grindingconical rollers for roller bearings. Secured to a portion 3 of the frame of the machine near the feed wheel, as by bolts 4, is a gib 5 on which is mounted a slide 6. Said slide 6 is underout along one edge 7 to receive one beveled edge of the gib and in a recess along the other edge is disposed an adjustable gib 8 having an inclined surface 9 cooperating with the other edge of the gib. Screws 10 extendthrough vertically elongated holes 11 in said gib 8 and are threaded into said slide 6. Lock screws 12 mounted in the top ofsaid slide 6 bear against the top of said adjust-able gib 8 to locate it vertically Said slide 6 is provided with a circular recess in which is mounted a circular hub portion 13 of a head 14. A screw 15 having an" enlarged flat head 16-is mounted in a recess in the back 'face of said slide and is threaded into said hub portion 13 of said head 14. Thus I said head 14 may be turned in said slide and may be secured in desired position by means of screws 17 extending through arcuate slots 18 in said head 14 and threaded into holes in said slide 6. Around its periphery the hub 13' may be provided with an annular rib 19 that extends into a countersunk annular recess20 provided therefor in said head. Said slide 6 may be provided with a hole 21 in whose institute an additional means for holding said head 14 in the desired angular position.
Said head 14 is provided with undercut j aw members 24 constituting slide'ways in which is mounted a slide member 25. Said, slide 25 extends transversely with respect to said main slide 6. Said head 14 is provided with a cross member 26 disposed in line with the end of said slide memberand provided with an opening through which extends a pin27 that is provided with a handle 28 that abuts against the cross member. On the other side of the cross member 26 from the handle 28 is an annular rib 29 on said pin 27 and a was or 30 is interposed between said rib 29'and hework.
Said slide or guide carrier is provided with undercut portions 38 providing slideways for an undercut groove in a slide member 39 that carries a grinding wheel 40. The grinding wheel carrier 39 is provided with a substantially semicircular journal bearing portion 41 to which is secured as by screws 42 a cooperating semicircular portion 43.
Through the circular opening thus formed extends a shaft'44 on the end of which is secured, as by a screw 45,v the grinding wheel that grinds the bottom of said groove. Said grinding wheel carrier 39 has an end piece 46. that is provided with a-slot 47 .in one projecting vportion through which extends the reduced neck portion of a screw 48 that extends into a threaded hole 49 provided therefor in the guide carrier 25. Thus byturning said screw 48, said grinding wheel carrier 39 may be moved in and out along said guide carrier 25,- (transversely with respect to the main slide 6) properly positioning the grinding wheel 40 with respect to the bottom of the groove 1 of the feed. wheel 2.
Said grinding wheel carrier 39 is provided with a rib 50 having undercut edges fitting in undercut jaws 51 in a slide member 52 sliclable on said rib 50. Said slide is provided with a circular recess 53 into which extends the circular hub portion 54 of a head 55 that serves as a mounting for a cross slide 56 in which is secured a diamond tool 57 for dressing the surface of the grinding wheel. Mounted in a recess in the back face of the slide 52 is the enlarged head 58 of a screw 59 whose'threaded portion extends into the threaded'bore of said hub portion 54 of said head 55.
The projection of said end member 46 of the grinding wheel carrier 39 opposite the portion containing the slot 47 is provided with a hole 60 through which extends thereduced unthreaded neck portion of a screw 61 whose threaded end entends into said slide 52, thus making it possible to move said slide 52 longitudinally of said grinding wheel carrier 39.
Said slide 52 is provided with projecting lugs'62 through each of which extends a screw 63; that abuts against a projecting por-. tion 64 of said head 55. Thus by turning said screws 63, said head 55 may be turned in said slide 52 to vary the angularposition of said diamond tool cross slide 56 relative to the grinding wheel. The diamond tool 57 is mounted in a recess in said carrier 56 and is held in desired position by means of a screw 65.
Said head 55 is provided with a projection 66 through which extends the reduced neck portion of a screw 67 that is provided with a handle 68 for turning it Said screw 67 extends into a threaded hole in said diamond tool carrier 56, whereby the carrier may be moved on its slideway 69. V
The tool is prepared for use by adjusting the guides 37 so that said guides properly engage groove walls, and adjusting the grinding wheel carrier 39 by means of its adjusting screw 48. The angular position of the guide carrier 25 and of the grinding wheel carrier 39 may be'adjusted by turning said head 14. After the grinding wheel 40 and the guides 37 .have been separately adjusted, the two may be moved as a unit by turning the handle 28. The slide 6 carrying the-entire mechanism may be moved endwise along the gib 5 and the feed wheel 2 turned so that two groove walls are properly engaged by the guides 37. Then the rotation of the feed wheel will carry the tool with it along the groove, causing the grinding wheel to grind the bottom of the groove 1.
When the grinding wheel 40 is worn, or when it is desired to dress its grinding surface to a different shape, the diamond tool 57 may be moved back and forth across the grinding surface of the grinding wheel as the grinding wheel is rotated. The back and forth movement is obtained by turning the handle 68 of the screw that moves the diamond tool carrier 56, and any desired adjustment of the diamond tool and carrier may be obtained by turning the diamond tool head 55 by-means of the screws 63 or by moving the slide 52 by means of its adjusting screw.
The above described dressing tool has numerous advantages. It may be very delicately adjusted to any particular lead or pitch of groove, depth of groove or diameter of feed wheel; and by removing the grinding wheel and guides and'replacing them with new ones, the tool may be used for any desired width of grooves and so on. The grinding or dressing operation is practieallyautomatic, it being necessary'only to move the guides into engagement with walls of the feed wheel groove, the tool being then' fed along the feed wheel by the rotation of the latter.
Obviously numerous changes may be made without departing from the'inventionand I do not wish to be limited to the precise constructions shown.
What I claim is: v
1. A device for dressing the grooves of helically grooved wheels and the like comprising a slide arranged to move across the 'helically grooved wheels and the like comface of helically prising a slide arranged to move across the the wheel, a rotatably mounted grinding wheel supported from said slide, and a guide supported from said slide and adapted to engage the wall of a groove to propel the slide and grinding wheel across the face of the wheel. 3. A device for helically grooved wheels and the like comprising a slide arranged to move across the face of the wheel, a rotatably mounted grinding wheel supported from said slide, a guide supported from said slide and adapted to engage the wall of a groove to propel the slide and grinding wheel across the face of the wheel, means for adjusting the angular position of said guide and grinding wheel, means for adjusting said guide and said grinding wheel as a unit toward and each other, and means for moving said ide and said grinding wheel as a unit towar and from the work. i

A device for dressing the grooves of helically grooved wheels and the like comprising a gibhaving beveled edges, a slide having an undercut rib fitting over one of said edges, a wedge block adjustably secured in said slide and fitting the other beveledr edge of said gib, a rotatably mounted grinding wheel supported from said slide, and a guide supported from said slide and adapted to engage the wall of a groove to propel the grinddressing the grooves of slide and grinding wheel across the face of d the wheel.

A device for dressing groovesin a wheel or the like comprising a slideway, a slide movable therealong, a head a'djustably secured to said slide, slideways in said head disposed transversely with respect to said slide, a carrier mounted in said slideways in said head, said head having a cross member disposed over the ends of said slideways, a rod mounted to rotate in said cross member, an operating handle for said rod, the end of said rod being screwthreaded and extending into a threaded hole in said carrier, whereby said carrier may be moved in said slideways, a guide adjustably mounted on the end of said carrier and adapted to engage the wall of a groove, slideways in said guide carrier, a second carrier mounted in said slideways, a grindingwheel mounted in said carrier, and meansfor'moving said grinding wheel carrier in its slideways.

A device for dressing grooves in a wheel or the like comprising a slideway, a slide movable therealong, a head having a circular hub portion disposed ina circular recess provided therefor in said slide, said head having arcuate slots in which are disposed the shanks of screws whose ends are screwed into said slide to hold said head in desired angular position on said slide, slideways in said head disposed transversely with respect to said slide, a carrier movably mounted in said slideways in said head, a guide adjustably mounted on the end of said carrier and adapte to engage the wall of a groove, means for moving said guide carrier, slideways in said guide carrier, in said slideways and a grinding wheel mounted in said carrier.

A device for dressing grooves in a wheel or the like comprising a slideway, a slide movable therealong, a head having a circular hub portion disposed in a circular'recess provided therefor in said slide, said head having arcuate slots in which are disposed the shanks of screws whose ends are screwed into said slide to hold said head in desired angular position on said slide, the hub portion of said head having an annular peripheral rib disposed in an annular groove provided therefor in said slide, slideways in said head disposed transversely with respect to said slide, a carrier movably mounted in said slideways in said head, a guide adjustably mounted onthe end of said carrier and adapted to engage the wall of a groove, means for moving said guide carrier,"slideways in said guide carrier, a secondrarrier mounted in said slideways, and a grinding wheel mounted in said carrier.

A device for dressing grooves in a wheel or the like comprising a slideway, a slide movable therealong, a head having a circular hub portion disposed in a circular recess provided therefor in said slide, said head hava second carrier mounted ing arcuateslots in which are disposed the shanks of screws whose ends are screwed into said slide to hold said head in desired angular position on said slide, the hub portion of said head having an annular peripheral rib disposed in an annular groove provided therefor in said slide, said slide having a hole therein, a plug in the inner end, said hole engaging said peripheral rib, a screw in the outer end of said hole holding said plug firmly against said peripheral rib, slideways in said head disposed transversely with re spect to said slide, a carrier movably mounted in said slideways in said head, a guide adjustably mounted on the end offsaid carrier and adapted to engage the wall of a groove, means for moving said guide carrier, slideways in said guide carrier, a second carrier mounted 'in said slideways, and a grinding wheel mounted in said carrier.
11. A device for dressing grooves in a wheel or the like comprising a slideway, a
' slide movable therealong, a head secured to said slide, slideways in said head disposed transversely with respect to saidslide, a carrier movably mounted in said slideways in said head, a guide adjustably mounted on the end of said carrier andadapted to engage the wall of a groove, means for moving said guide carrier, slideways in said guide carrier,- a second carrier mounted in said slideways, a grinding wheel mounted in said carrier, slideways on said grinding wheel carrier, a slide mounted therein, a cross slide mounted on slideways provided therefor and a dress ing tool for said grinding wheel mounted on said cross slide, 1 3
12. A device for dressing grooves in a wheel or the like comprising a slideway, a slide movable therealong, ahead secured to position of said head, a crossvslide mounted on slideways provided therefor on said head and a dressing tool for said grinding Wheel mounted on said cross slide. *i

A device for dressing grooves in a Wheel or the like comprising a slideway, a slide movable therealong, a head secured to said slide, means for changing the angular adjustment of said head, slideways in said head disposed transversely with respect to said slide, a carrier movably mounted in said slideways in said head, a guide mounted on the end of said carrier and adapted to engage the wall of a groove, means for moving said guide Carrier, slideways in said guide carrier, a second carrier mounted in said slideways, a grinding wheel mounted in said carrier, slideways on said grinding wheel carrier, a slide mounted therein, a head mounted in said slide, means for adjusting the angular position of said head, a cross slide mounted on slideways provided therefor on said head and a dressing tool for said grinding Wheel mounted on said cross slide.
