ANIMATED DOLL.

This invention relates to dolls and has for a principal object to attach the legs of the doll for movement thereon and connected for movement with respect to each other whereby upon the movement of one of the legs in a predetermined manner the opposite leg will be moved forwardly and upwardly with respect to the doll in a manner simulat-ing the kicking action of a dancer.

Another object is to provide spring means for attaching the legs to the body of the doll and operable to retain the legs in the normal position, said spring means being arranged whereby to move the opposite leg in opposite forward and rearward direct-ions and also including a common spring means attached to each of the legs for returning the same to normal position.

A still further object is to provide an animated doll of this character of simple and practical construction, adapted to simulate the kicking action of a dancer in a realistic manner, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction and combination of the various elements comprising the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the doll, the dotted lines illustrating the relative position of the legs in kicking position,

Figure 2 is a view in front elevation with parts shown in section whereby to illustrate the spring actuating means,

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the slidable leg attaching plate and Figure 4 is a similar view of the upper portion of one of the legs showing the manner for pivot-ally attaching the same.

Referring now to the drawing in detail,

' the invention comprises a doll including a body portion indicated at 5 at the lower portion of which is formed a vertically extending slotted opening 6 having a leg attaching block 7 arranged for vertical sliding movement therein. The upper edge of the block 7 is provided with a screw eye 8 or the like by means of which a spring 9 may be attached thereto for connecting the same with the inner end of the slotted opening whereby to normally retain the block ininwardly extended position.

The lower portion of the block 7 is provided with forked ends 10 extending therefrom in spaced parallel relation and to which lugs 11 formed'on the upper ends of the legs 12 may be pivotally attached. A p1vot pin 13 extending between the ends 10 of the block provide a common pivotal con nectlng means for the upper end of each of the legs.

The legs are of rigid construction throughout and the opposite edge of each legis connected at its top portion by a spring member 1% attached to the body, which may be in the form of an elastic or other suitable spring device. It will thus be understood that the spring member 14 attached to one of the legs tends to move the same in one direction with respect to the body, whereas the other spring member attached to the opposite side of the other leg tends to move such leg in an opposite direction. It will also be further observed that the spring 9 attached to the block 7 normally retaining the block in upwardly extended position will serve to retain the leg in a normally straight position as indicated by the full lines in Figure 1 whereas upon the movement of one of the legs clownwardly from the body as for instance by pulling the same, the spring member 14 will serve to swing the leg in a predetermined direction, depending upon the side of the leg at which the spring member is attached, as indicated by the dotted lines.

After the legs have been swung out wardly the binding action between the lower end of the body and the upper end of the leg will serve to temporarily retain the legs in thrust outwardly swung position. Upon the release of the legs from such binding action the spring 9 will thereupon return the same to normal position.

It is obvious that the invention is susceptible of various changes and modifica tions, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:

1. In a doll of the class described comprising a body portion, legs pivotally attached thereto and mounted for lengthwise movement with respect to the body, spring means for swinging the legs in opposite directions when moved into position outwardly of the body and spring means adapted to return the legs to a normal position with respect to the body, each of said spring means yield-ably retaining the legs against the lengthwise movement.

2. In a doll of the class described comprising a body portion having a slotted opening extending vertically therein, a block arranged for vertical sliding movement within the opening,legs pivotally at tached to the block, spring means adapted to retain the block in upwardly disposed position with the legs arranged normally with respect to the body and spring and means attached to the legs adapted to swing the same outwardly upon the downward movement oi the block.

In a doll of the class described comprising a body portion having a slotted opening extending vertically therein, a block arranged for movement in the openin spring means normally urging the block in inwardly extended position therein, said block having a pair of forked ends extending in spaced parallel relation from the lower portion thereof, a pivot pin extending therebetween, said doll having a pair of legs provided with lugs extending from the upper edge thereof and pivotally connected with said pin, and spring means carried by the body connecting the front section of one of the legs and the rear section of the opposite leg whereby to urge the same for movement in opposite directions upon the downward movement of the block.

In a doll ot' the class described comprising a body portion having a vertically extended slotted opening formed in the lower portion thereof, a block slidably arranged in the opening, spring means attaching the block to the body normally retaining the same in inwardly extended position, the body having a pair of legs extending therefrom and provided with attaching lugs extending upwardly from the upper edge thereof and adapted to be inserted in the end of said opening, means for pivotally attaching said lugs to the block, each of said legs being arranged for swinging movement in a direction transversely with respect to the body-upon the downward movement of the block.
